Age: 16
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 12
Appearance:
Anani is five feet nine inches tall with a lanky build. Even though he doesn't tower over most people, he's still above average among the teens of District 12, most likely due to the lack of nourishment. He has short black hair, which he can easily wash and dry. Because he took to his mother's Anglo side, he has light brown eyes and less slanted eyes, which are unlike his sister's. His skin is slightly tinted, but still paler than Aranica's skin.
Because he brought himself up, he wasn't able to afford his choice of clothes. Eventually, he just sought out the most durable clothes that he'd be able to afford, not really caring about the style. Due to this, he grew an affinity for rough jeans which lasted him a decent amount of time. His stoic disposition was derived from the duress he received in his childhood as he had to bring up his sister and himself. As he continued to ignore his sister as she became more and more ill, the guilt started to appear in his diurnal mien.
Personality:
Anani Petros has the idea of "every man for himself" embedded into his mind. He dislikes having to take care of other people when necessities are already at a low. But even though he dislikes helping other people, he does feel the guilt when he ignores or refuse their plea for help. As a result, he tends to avoid all conflict and try to go about his own way peacefully.
He sees change as a negative thing and prefers to keep things in their original status quo. As his sister started to talk to the rocks and the clouds and pressed on him that her name was Aranica, he refused to conform to her wishes and continued to call her by her original name, Nisa. Although he is selfish, he's not lazy. He works hard with determination at whatever he does in order to live on. He doesn't look at an idealistic future, but rather concentrates on living his own life pragmatically. He doesn't dream big, but just focuses on feeding himself on a diurnal basis.
He has stooped down low to breaking some rules in order to survive, whether it is to steal food and money or to bribe others to get what he desires. Once again, even though his morality is questionable, he still feels the guilt and tries to make it up to the people around him later on, when he has a surplus of supplies. Because he has had no education since the age of twelve, his knowledge of the world is very limited but even then, his common sense and intuition keep him alive.
History:
His first several years, only distantly remembered, were spent in District One with his mother, an irresponsible young woman named Aranica. She liked him, but wasn’t entirely sure what to do with him and largely ignored him. When he was four, Aranica had a second child, who Tarok, their father, would later name Nisa. Having no desire for another baby that she didn’t know how to deal with, Aranica tried to kill the girl. This led to Tarok going on the run with the children while Aranica, half-insane, tried to hunt them down.
Tarok, Anani, and Nisa settled down in District Twelve. Tarok got a job as a watchmaker, and for eight years they lived more or less normally, although the children were homeschooled. When he was twelve and Nisa eight, Aranica showed up and tried to kill Nisa. Tarok fought her off, but at the cost of his own life. The children were stranded.
Even though Anani was coerced into the position of the head of his family, he didn’t really know how to take charge. The strain of looking after himself and Nisa, not to mention pretending to the world that there was a parent in the house, got overwhelming. After a while, he found himself wishing that Nisa was out of the way, but he didn’t have the heart to outright abandon her, which, given her helplessness, would be the same as killing her. He eventually ended up putting her in a cave by the mines, visiting daily to bring her food and water and talk to her. With her at least safely out of the main town, he could concentrate on finding sleeping spots around the district discreetly.
While Nisa was in her cave, forgetting her entire life and fighting to stay more or less sane, he was doing his best to learn to live on his own. School wasn’t an issue, because he could pretend that he was still being homeschooled, but he did have to find some way to finance food and other necessities. He couldn’t go into the mines (he was too young), and faced the same problem that his sister would find later: few people would hire a twelve-year-old for anything but the simplest of tasks.
As he got older, his situation improved, but his sister’s deteriorated. Often, when trying to talk to her and getting only the most minimal of responses because she barely even remembered him. Part of him wanted to take her back into the world, but he didn’t know if she could handle it, and a petty bit of him didn’t want to be responsible for her. Eventually, she snapped back to her talkative self, but only in order to talk to rocks. He was a stranger to her; when he tried to talk to her, she tried to introduce herself as Aranica and tell him about her rock friends. The development scared him, and he ran off, leaving her to her own devices.
After feeling guilty for months, he eventually went back to the caves to find her. But to his surprise, he found it empty. Whether he felt remorse at losing his sister, probably to the hands of death, or joy at being released from his responsibilities, Anani continued to live on as he used to, fending for himself in his impecunious ways.
Nisa’s recent appearance in the Games took him by shock. Even though she continued to assert that her name was Nisa, he could easily tell the face that had scrutinized his own to of no avail. Even though his face had fallen into oblivion to his sister, he continued to harbor the guilt and eventually gave up all of his savings to sponsor his sister throughout the games. As he continued to silently cheer her on, he grew sick with guilt and disgust towards himself. To his surprise and unseen happiness, his sister had survived the games, only to force his guilt to resurface with a greater intensity. With that in mind, Anani was forced to overcome his apprehension of change and facing problems as he approached the victor of the 55th Hunger Games.

This is the brother of Ruthie's character, Aranica. She created his name, personality, appearance, and history, but I just rewrote her ideas. :3
