Name: Anni Dorst
Age: 15
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 3
Appearance:Her being the oddity of the family extends to her appearance. In a family with mainly light hair colours, Anni’s dark chocolate brown hair stands out whenever she is seen with her family. Both of her siblings have light hair: Rogen having a golden brown, Jrick having a dirty blond. Her only consolation is that she has the same hair type as her younger sister, but otherwise, she feels as if her hair is a complete anomaly. Her hair is in light curls, sometimes accentuated on a bad day, but otherwise nearing straight. She frequently leaves her hair down, because she does not want to bother putting it up every day.
Wide blue eyes are not something that is common in her family, either. The blue eyes can be found with the three siblings; the wide eyes are not. It is a characteristic only she and her sister share, a fact that ticks only Anni off. Perhaps it is because she feels that her hair is too dark for her eyes to look compatible. Or she just dislikes having to be so different from her family. Like any situation with a child who looks fairly different from the family, rumours find a way to spark up, some that have yet to be quashed. The family has long since learned to ignore them; Anni has not. Even after many years of questioning, she is still not convinced about her place in the family.
Her eyebrows appear lighter than her hair colour but that is only because they are thin. The soft, short brown hairs form a thin line with a slight curve over her wide eyes. Not many people notice them as they are too preoccupied with staring at her eyes to give a care what is above her wide eyes. Same goes for her dark eyelashes. They create a dark line around her eyes, but no one really notices it as the pale-blue irises stand out much more.
Her figure is slim, perhaps the only thing Anni can tolerate about herself. Despite the family’s ability to actually keep her fed, Anni has a tendency to skip over meals if she feels that she is too busy to eat. Although not healthy, she finds it to be much better if she finished her work than if she ate. She would still grab a bit to eat after, but it is never enough to count as a full meal, something her family frowns upon.
She is tiny in both length and width. At a great 4’11”, her sister is only one inch shorter than her. She hasn’t even bothered trying to compare with her big brother. Her shortness is another reason why she is constantly bullied; she is a really easy target. The only benefit to her small size is she can hide in the most random spaces if she ever feels the need to hide. When she was younger, she would take her sister to one of those hiding places where the two would play since they were pretty much the only ones who could squeeze through.
Anni’s skin is relatively pale, perhaps more of a pinkish undertone than white. Her tendency to stay indoors more than out contributes to her ability to keep her skin as pale and smooth as a baby. That and her inability to mature physically. There are a few dark spots along her left jaw, and if anyone looks closely, a scar on her right cheek by the lobe of her ear. A significant scar would be the one on the palm of her right hand from the stupid mistake she made when she was only 9 years old. The line is significantly lighter than the rest of her skin, almost having a silvery sheen to it. When Anni looks at it, though, the pain from the actual incident keeps ringing in her mind.
Personality:
Being a middle child is difficult. Being the older sister of a girl much more out-going than you is just plain tough. She doesn’t blame her sister for being more social, but she finds it annoying, only pulling back into her shell even more. If anyone asks her though, she’ll insist that there is no resentment for her younger sister at all; after all, they were born that way.
As far as Anni knows, she was always quiet and shy. Yes, she would smile, but they were the simple, meek smiles that everyone took to be a small concentrated effort. They are not as painful as they appear to be, but Anni’s personality is so closed off, no one knows otherwise.
People like to believe that her outside shell is nothing like her inside shell, that there is a very outgoing girl, that she is simply protecting herself. Every single time, they ask her to show her social side, all she can do is merely shake her head and respond with a whisper that there is no other side to her. Yet they still keep asking and pushing her to speak up louder, to be more open with her actions. Some already expect that quiet nod and leave her be, but the majority refuse to leave her alone.
That is not to say that she has many friends. The only reason why she is flocked by so many people is to be bullied or to be watched over to see if they will ever see the day Anni talks more than she needs to. Most of the time, they are disappointed. After all, the girl says what she needs to say and leaves. Some lucky few who have nothing better to do have the opportunity to see her in a rant mode--or what her definition of a rant is. Just a mere thought would be a surprise to those flockers.
At home, when she can finally be alone, Anni continues with her quiet personality. Her parents used to worry that there is something wrong with the girl, but after a while, they simply accepted that that was who she was, and they moved on to their other kids. Even if Anni is naturally closed off, she does wish that her parents had pressured her more to speaking out. However, since they gave up a while ago, it is only up to her sister to get her to speak, sometimes her brother as well.
Anni is constantly plagued with nightmares as well, perhaps something that has to do with her ability to keep her mouth shut. As a young child, the nightmares could be as simple as a teddy bear chasing her, but as she matured, so did her nightmares. Family and friends started dying off, homes destroyed, Peacekeepers storming in. The images will go through Anni’s mind like a movie reel, something she constantly fears.
Intelligence is…well, it is a part of Anni. She learned how to work independently, relying on herself to know the answers since she is too afraid to ask anyone for help. That is not to say that all the information simply flows into her mind; she has to work hard to understand the concepts she is learning; she just doesn’t blow it off like most of her classmates. Because of this, Anni does have an interest in electronics, her fingers always reaching out to see if she can make the connection. The inquisitive nature is only limited to her studies, though.
History:Would life have been different if Anni was an only child? Possibly. She would have been the center of her parents’ attention; she would have been blessed with her own room. But that just wouldn’t be the life of Anni Shira Dorst, now would it?
A cold and grey day was to be known as the day Anni was born. Already an older brother was around, probably wondering what monstrosity had just come out of his mother. Well, Anni wasn’t necessarily a monstrosity, but she was a surprise to the parents. There was a dark mop of hair on the baby’s head, the eyes closed but large. It was a strange comparison from their son who had light hair and eyes nowhere near that size. They figured that the dark hair would soon lighten, though, a process that seemed to happen frequently in the family. As for the eyes, her face would eventually grow into them. But the moment the tiny baby opened her eyes, they knew that something must have gone wrong.
They still loved their little girl, making sure that she did not starve, that she was treated properly. After all, what kind of parents would they be if they neglected their child? They still worried over her, though; the small size of the child was on the forefront of their mind. To Anni, there was never anything wrong. She was just a little girl who liked to stay on her bed and hug her teddy bear.
When Anni reached the age of two, another child was born into the family, this one was to be named Rogen. This little girl looked more familiar to the parents, though the wide eyes did shock them at first. But she had light hair, just like the rest of her family, making her a part of them no matter the size and colour of her eyes. Anni was only two years old, yet she could feel the shift in the family atmosphere, one that she did not like. It was around this time the nightmares began.
Family life was nothing for significant for Anni in her younger years, but school was something she labeled as hell. She was frequently bullied, teased, picked on for her looks. She never spoke up at class, causing the teachers to either be irritated by her or just jumping to the conclusion that she didn’t know. But she did know; she just didn’t want to say it. For that, her class ranking was often low, her teachers feeling that she was not putting enough effort into her work even if it did look nice and complete. School became a place for Anni to become frustrated, but she could never show that frustration—that would have been too direct.
An accident occurred one day at school when Anni was playing around with some of the equipment. Curiosity had gotten the best of her as she examined a machine that was set out on the teacher’s desk. They were supposed to go over it after break time, but Anni had not gone out to break and she was alone in the room…with the machine. With a curious flick of a switch, Anni found a huge cut across the palm of her hand, the blood flowing out freely. The cut was mainly on the meat of her hand, a long line from the base of her pinky to right below the thumb. No veins or arteries were nicked or cut, but the pain was so great and Anni was so weak, she passed out a few minutes after. The teacher found her on the floor and tended to the cut before she could regain consciousness. Although it took a while for the cut to heal, the worst part of the whole experience was the lecture her teacher gave her once she woke up.
Anni always reacted to the Hunger Games with the same emotion: fear. There was fear for her brother, for herself, and for her sister. Her worry was often so great, she would be a sick a few days after the Reaping was over, even though none of her family members was picked. It became something that happened regularly, causing everyone to expect that she would be kept at home for a few days until she could fully recuperate from the worry. She received no training for the Hunger Games as district three was no career district. Her greatest fear was that she would be thrown in and never have the chance to say good bye, which was why she despised the Hunger Games so much. However, she never outwardly mentioned it, leaving people guessing as to what her view was on the Hunger Games.
