she greeted her, slowing her pace to a wak so that she could catch up. Tope didn't know exactly how large the circumference of the lake was, nor how far she planned on going. The more distance they put between them and the rest of the team the better, but there was always the chance that they would run into another tribute (or tributes) in their travels. Even though she hadn't been injured in the last one, Topaz didn't think that she would be able to handle another one. It wasn't that she was hesitant to kill; at this point in the games such a thing was next-to-impossible. She'd was immune to the after effects of murdering something or someone by now; she had seen too many tributes and creatures collapse dead to entertain that notion. It was just that, without a proper rest, her muscles were growing incredibly sore.Breaking away from the alliance had been easier than Topaz had expected. The hounds would remain occupied by the remaining members; it was tearing herself away that had been the real challenge, and she had overcome that pretty easily. The District One tribute had never felt any real connection to Takeba or Anani. They had simply been teammates, tributes that she had only associated herself with for the benefits they would provide her with in the arena. Even Nash had been just that, to begin with, though she'd progressed to much more. This was precisely why she had asked the other girl to accompany her as she fled the fight and the team.
For a good twenty minutes Topaz had just ran, concentrating only on what was in front of her. She had decided to stay near the lake for a bit, as she felt safe here, despite the ominious look of the entire area. Of course, safety was practically nonexistent here, but security was a nice feeling. After she had decided that enough time had passed and the mutts were definitely not pursuing her she slowed a bit...and soon came to find that Nash had indeed followed behind.
Her face broke into a wide smile as she watched the dark haired girl approach her. The fact that Nash had come after her like she'd requested did wonders for Tope's ego, which hadn't been inflated enough lately for her liking. Even though Nash's reasoning behind leaving probably had more to do with her recognition of the deadliness of the remaining hound and a desire to get away from all that carnage, this didn't change the fact that she hadn't gone off by herself rather than accompany Topaz. Whatever her motives for doing so, the seventeen-year-old was ridiculously glad that she had.
"Hey,"
This thought only made her more aware of the growing pain in her legs. She'd ran distance before, yes, but never fueled by only the little amount of sleep she had managed to get the previous night. Enough was enough. This spot was as good as anywhere, at least. It was an area where the trees grew close to the shore, so they could be near the water yet still concealed by the foliage. Hopefully there were no more mutant animals abound; they seemed to be having the worst luck possible with those damn things. All in all, it was a nice spot. She was about to turn around and ask the team what they thought...before realizing that the only one here was Nash. Ah, well. An improvement in many ways. "Look good?" she asked, gesturing towards the area. "I figure we can spend the night here, maybe get moving in the morning. Seems quiet enough to rest without taking watch shifts. I'm pretty done in, dunno about you." Tope had no clue why she was talking so much. Perhaps she was hoping for an equally lengthy response? She did love listening to Nash talk, for she did not speak often which made Tope enjoy hearing the sound of her soft voice all the more.
The red-haired tribute then proceeded to set up camp, emptying her bag of the essentials for the night. Her jug of purified water. A handful of edible plants, though she was not partiiularly hungry. The sleeping bags...or wait, rather, sleeping bag. Shouldn't there be two? She could have sworn there had been two. One had probably gotten lost in all the mayhem of the fight... "Huh. Looks like we're short a sleeping bag." She checked around again, just to be sure. Nothing. "You mind?" She couldn't help but let out a snicker at the irony of this situation. Was something finally going as she wanted it to? One sleeping bag, one cold night, and one other girl whom Topaz was all too fond of...this was so perfect in so many ways. Of course, it would only be so if Nash didn't mind sharing.
It was dusk, and nightfall was drawing nearer as Topaz spread out the sole sleeping bag in the middle of a copse of trees about twenty feet from the shoreline of the misty lake. She sat down to take a sip of her water and stare out across the expanse of blue-gray towards the area they had left, wondering if the fight had ceased or if the massacre was still continuing. They'd find out by nightfall what the result had been, supposing the anthem was on time. If Takeba or Anani's faces were not in the sky...well, then, they were truly lucky. She forced herself to acknowledge that their well-being didn't matter anymore. Not in the slightest. So rather than dwell on this any longer she turned back to Nash, bracing herself to ask the question that, if answered truthfully, had the potential to open the door to something entirely new.
"So...you followed. Like I wanted you to." Tope took a moment to compose herself mentally before continuing. "Can I ask...why? Why did you listen?" She sincerely hoped this would begin a much longer conversation than they'd ever had before. Because in reality, while the Career so longed for Nash's affections, she hardly even knew the girl.
