Meena Waters, District Twelve

Meena, at first glance, appears to be bred and born in the Seam. She is a bit too short for one of her age with gangly limbs that are meant to be grown into. She has slightly frizzy dark hair that flows down her back, stopping just above her waist. She has the normal olive skin tone of others from the Seam. She has the hollow look of someone that has never had a full stomach.

Under closer inspection though, you would come to find that her skin is tough and sinewy and her nose and cheeks are sprinkled with freckles. You would find her strong and able, her bones laced with lean muscles. When she smiles, a single dimple appears on her left cheek. She has a small, slightly upturned nose, and soft lips. Purple circles under her eyes indicate lack of sleep. If you ever are to catch her deep in thought you would know that she often bites her bottom lip unconciously. But, none of these are her most striking feature. Above all, her hard, but somehow always gleaming eyes is the most interesting thing about her appearance. Her eyes are a shocking emerald green.

Meena has an inability to cooperate with other human beings. Sure, she can talk to them, but she cannot work with them, and some of the reasoning behind that is that she has the stubbornness of a mule, and then some. But right along with that stubbornness is determination that almost makes up for it. Only 'almost', nothing more. She has the capability to have a great temper, and uses that capability often. She is snarky and arrogant and has quick wits. She is a quite impulsive, though, which has often landed her with a beating. One more thing is that she has a pride like no other and will hold a grudge if you hurt it.

That leads me to another point in her character. She can and will hold a grudge, if in her mind, need be. These needs include insulting her or her family or friends, taking their desperately needed food, or even thinking of her big brother in a mean way(explanation in the history) and many more. Another higher than average trait is her fierce will to protect those weaker than herself. She would take a bullet for those she loved and even those she hated just because it is in her nature to protect, no matter where they stand in her eyes.

Meena has the courage and bravery of a lion, when it comes to loved ones. Often this leads to rashness. She enjoys standing out in a crowd, which on its own is her standing out, for it seems to her no one else in Twelve does. She is continuously caught laughing with her tiny knot of friends because she loves to smile. She has a devotion to her brother that is impossible to sever.

Born on April sixth, Meena lives with her older brother, Jason, and their parents in the Seam. Her father and brother both have the same green eyes as her. In fact, they look almost identical, except for their ages and genders. Her mother is Seam all the way, gray eyes and all. Her parents are in their early fifties and her brother is 19 years old. He is mentally challenged and Meena loves him more than the entire world. Ever since she was old enough to understand her brother's condition, she has been protecting him from harsh comments and now that she is strong enough, has started beating up those who say something that goes too far.

Her family is one of the poorest of the poor, and Meena and her father go forging for edible plants just outside the fence. They have never built up the courage to go far without a weapon. Her mother and father work the coal mines as much as possible to take in as much cash as possible, but it is never enough. When Meena was able to apply for tesserae when she turned 12, she nearly jumped for joy. She finally had been given the opportunity to see her brother's eyes light up when she brought home the rations to feed her family!

When she was young, she had an older sister who died in the Hunger Games. Her name was Lilia Rose Waters and she was the only one in the entire family that had their father's parent’s (their grandparents) silky blonde hair. She was only 13 years old when she became a contestant in the games. She died in the in the final eight, and that was more awful than any other death because those reporters come and interview the players' family and the Waters were actually able to find some hope and then BAM!, they're blown off their feet by their daughter's death. It was worse for Meena's parents than anyone else because she was still too little to understand what was going on and her brother was mostly oblivious. Somehow, the Waters manage to scrape by with all that weight on their shoulders.
