[HAIR]Personality:
“It doesn’t stay down.”
Chance’s hair, without a doubt, is probably the messiest mop-top in all of District Five. It isn’t that he doesn’t wash it or take care of it. Rather, it seems to have a mind of its own and sticks up at every which angle it chooses. With no amount of water or gels can Chance get it to stay completely flat. A hair or two will always pop up. Chance’s hair comes in two shades. During the summer, when he spends all of his time out in the sun, it is bright blonde, almost white. During the winter, when he would rather be indoors, it turns to a dark honey color.
[SKIN]
“Yeah, I wish I could get that fixed.”
Chance has really bad skin. It is mangled with a mixture of freckles, scars, and acne brought on by an early puberty. Chase is a generally tan person but it is hard to tell under the dark spots and pale pinks of scars. This boy isn’t very vain but even he has to be a bit self-conscious about his face. He is often quickly judged by how his face looks and to fix this, he has tried various remedies but nothing works. So, all Chase can hope for is that while he grows up, it will clear up.
[EYES]
“I can keel you with a glance. C<”
Not really, Chance may think his gaze can be menacing at times but it really isn’t. Instead, the light blue gaze makes him look innocent and childish. They show a lot of emotion, so if one is having a hard time reading his face, just look into his eyes. While even at his young age, he is already starting to lose his childish looks but his eyes still remain young. He has long eyelashes and they still lack the hard edges that show a life of hardship. This is the true part of his face that reminds people that Chance is still a kid.
[BUILD]
“Well, I like to run.”
Due a slightly cushy life, Chance does have some weight on him. Yet it is lost because he is a tall boy, nearing five feet and seven inches brought on by an early puberty. Most of his height though can be found in his legs that can be compared to those of a chicken. When walking, Chase seems to have almost no balance but when running, he moves quickly. This doesn’t stop him though from being a complete klutz. With large feet and skinny legs, Chase is constantly falling over small objects that he doesn’t see. If Chase can stay on his feet for even a few minutes, it is counted as a miracle. The boy sincerely hopes that like his terrible skin, he will grow out of being a klutz.
[SCARS]
“Please don’t look at it.”
One in particular stands out to everyone right away. How can it not when it stretches across his face. From one cheek to another, it stands bright pink in color, jagged, and poorly healed. It slashes across the bridge of his nose and forms a curved line. It had been just deep enough to cause such an ugly scar but too shallow for any real medical attention. Chase wishes that he didn’t get stared at because of it but it’s hard to miss when it takes up his face. The other scars that he has are little in comparison, mostly numerous dog bites on his hands, arms, and legs, and cut from knives that he wasn’t too careful about.
[OTHER]
-Chance is right-handed
-He has a nervous habit of running his hands through his hair
-Chance keeps his nails short and down the pink.
-He has extremely low blood pressure and when he stands up too quickly, he risks blacking out.
-He bruises easily and the bruises look worse than they actually are.
[OPTIMISTIC]History:
“This is going to be awesome!”
Saying that Chance is a glass half full is an understatement. Positivity is his middle name. Chance will try to see the bright side of everything and in everyone. He is quick to trust and makes rash decisions because of this and yet the consequences have not diluted the innocence in him. Chance also gets excited over nothing and never has doubts about any of his decisions or others. He does not fret over failure and charges ahead, full of happiness. It is almost surprising that a rainbow doesn’t follow him everywhere. He is such a ray of sunshine.
[LOVING]
“HI there Buddy.”
If you are Chance’s friend, you are his friend for life. Those that he is close to, he never forgets, he never ignores, and he never gets mad at them. He is almost like a dog in this sense. He is your best friend, no matter who you are. He will always love you, no matter how many times you put him down. No matter what, he will always return with a smile bigger than the last time. It is impossible for Chance to hold a grudge against those he has befriended. Even if they have been a total ass to him, he will always attempt to find the bright side of that person. The only time Chance loses a friend, it is never by his own choice.
[CLINGY]
“I don’t want to be alone.”
Even as Chance seems like the perfect friend, he cannot get mad at you no matter what you do. Yet, there are some downsides. Chance constantly wants to be by your side, almost like an overbearing dog. He doesn’t like to be alone and so, he will find a friend no matter the situation. Even if his newest victim is unwilling, he will attach himself to that person and never let go. Chance also lacks a sense of personal space and is constantly in the said victims face. He has no boundaries and will talk about anything and everything when being uncomfortably close to someone. No matter what this person says or does, there is no getting out of it.
[SOCIABLE]
“Why, I haven’t met you before!”
Chance will talk to anyone and everyone. It doesn’t matter if they are young or old, beautiful or ugly, tall or short, Chance will be their new best friend if given the chance. The boy lacks any sort of inhibitions when speaking to others. While girls are somewhat of a challenge for boys his age, Chance sees them the same as any other person. He believes that he can treat them the same as any other male child. Chance is also quite fond of parties because that means that there are many new people to meet and to talk to. Whenever Chance can find a fresh face, he will take advantage of this.
[FEARFUL]
“Sometimes, I act happy so I can feel happy.”
Despite the rainbow and sunshine exterior, Chance is a very fearful person on the inside. He acts the way he does not only to fool others but also fool himself. After a long game, pretending to be happy, he actually has become so. Yet, sometimes, a nagging feeling of fear comes along, almost shutting him down. Often, Chance is not prepared for these bouts of negative feeling and he often separates himself from others during this time. He doesn’t like people to see someone other than the joyful Chance they know. This can be brought on when he is verbally abused, is insulted harshly, or is excessively bullied. Then, when it goes away, Chance picks himself up and puts the pieces back together of his convincing disguise and continue on his merry way.
[BEFORE CHANCE]Codeword: Muttations
There was once a young boy that was a butcher’s son, following in his own father’s footsteps. And there a girl that was the daughter of a local merchant living with her mother while her father travelled. Every day, on request of her mother, the young girl went to the Butcher’s for the day’s meat. Unlike the other little girls, the place did not disgust her. Instead, she was curious about the meat and also of the butcher’s son, only a year older than she was. He was a dark haired boy with tan skin, unlike many of the other people in town.
Some days, the girl would only pass through the shop, picking up her mother’s usual order. Other days, when the time presented itself, she would spend a long while talking to the son. He was a sweet boy with a passion for his work. He was also fascinated by dogs and kept one himself in the shop. They would spend hours talking. The boy admitted that he too often saw the girl from afar, beautiful with pale skin and pale hair. Their friendship blossomed quickly and it was rare to see one without the other.
Going into their teenage years and after the fear of the Hunger Games, the two settled down together. The celebration of their marriage was rich and as fancy as their two families could afford. The man continued to follow in his father’s footsteps and eventually took over the store. His new wife became pregnant with their first child. That would eventually be Chance.
[INFANCY]
Chance was born a healthy child. His mother and father were happy to have the sound of little feet running through the house. Chase was a happy child, always going this way and that, causing noise and racket wherever he went. Yet, his two parents, their happy demeanors matching their sons, were never bothered by this.
Also at a young age, just as his father did, Chase showed an interest in dogs. That was when the feeding started. With the help of his father, Chase fed animal fat to the stray dogs around District Five each night. Eventually, it was a small pack that had formed and little Chance had started naming them. At first, his mother was not happy about this situation and worried that Chance was in danger. Yet, that faded away when night after night passed and there was no incident. Since those times, feeding the dogs has become a habit.
[CHILDHOOD]
Going into his early years, Chance was still the bright ray of sunshine that he had been as a small child. At times, he showed a bit of a moodier disposition but it was quickly hidden behind brighter exterior. From the moment he could talk, Chase was also quite the chatterbox and in school, it was hard to shut him up. He was a child that was friendly with everyone and even as he was bullied for being a bit small for his age, he still remained good friends with whomever he met. He was a hard person to ignore, especially when he was right in your face.
Also, Chance continued to feed the stray dogs around D5. Taking the fat left over from his work, he would feed those scraps to them. For the longest time, Chance had built quite the pack of regulars with the occasional new dog coming by for a snack. One day, a particularly large dog came by for a meal. Chance never turned a dog away and had a special love for larger dogs so he wasn’t bothered by the animal’s enormous size. Yet, when the boy went to feed the beast, it lashed out. Its teeth caught Chase’s face, causing the scar that stretches across from cheek to cheek.
After the attack, the beast was never seen again. And Chance was afraid to feed the dogs. Out of pity, his father continued to do it but his son didn’t seem eager to return to his hobby. Instead, he immersed in his work and avoided people for when he did come into contact with others; they always gave him pity about his scar. Chance didn’t want it.
[PRESENT]
Chance has started feeding the dogs again and has started being sociable again. What had turned it around was when one day, his father came in with a puppy. It was black and brown in color, a tail that had been cropped for unknown reasons. His father admitted that it had probably been a person’s pet that had ran away, yet it was still very young and couldn’t defend itself. His father had decided to keep it around the house.
At first, Chance was afraid of the dog, avoiding it at all costs. That was proved to be difficult in the small house. Eventually, once he had grown comfortably with it, Chance started to fall in love with the animal once more. He and the dog, named Ace, grew very close and once again, the boy started to feed the strays. Over the past year since the puppy was brought into the house, she refuses to leave Chance’s side and sleeps with him. It goes the same for Chance, the boy believes that if something every happened to Ace, he wouldn’t be sure what to do with himself.
Whenever people talk about Chance Grayson, it is always Chance and Ace, never the boy’s name alone. It is rare to ever see the boy without his dog.
