Jan Norrec {District 9}

Jan is relatively short, measuring at only 4”9, nevertheless, he is quite thin, but isn’t very muscular. He has pale white skin, and has brownish-blondish hair, which is always found hanging loosely over his shoulders. He is regarded as decently looking, but it isn’t that person that everyone automatically falls in love with. He has pale blue eyes, and is often praised because of the “Enlightening”affect they have on people who look deep into them.

He isn’t fully grown yet, and thus get’s called a midget. But he just ignored all of it, and made himself practically invisible. He has freckles around his small nose, and on his arms. He has practically no hair, which is a miracle, for both him and his family. He has natural highlights in his hair, and it’s always swept to the left. He often wears green pants, and a brown shirt with brown hunting boots.

Jan is quite shy, and doesn’t like being the center of attention, another result of the bullying he went through. He is also very reserved, and hates it if other people touch his things. He says that the only thing that keeps him going is music. The bullying has majorly impacted his life. He is known for suffering from depression, and random outbursts. He also blames his rigid past, which often brings forth terrible nightmares.

If there’s one thing that he’d give his life for, it's the necklace his mother gave him, before she was taken prisoner by the Capitol. This is also what haunts him the most, his mother being taken by the guards, his father getting shot right in front of him. Watching his little sister getting tortured to death because he couldn’t afford to tell the truth. And the way he sees it, it was all his fault. This is what he sees in his nightmares. Over and over.

Although he is quiet and reserved, if you get to know him, he can be quite nice, and even cheerful. Unfortunately, not very many people know this, and thus label him as a loner, or more a depressed person, which is after all, understandable. Even when he is at home, with his grandparents, he usually keeps to his room, and plays with his little kitten, “Missy”. If there’s one thing he adores, it’s to run into the woods, and just sit in this tree he discovered just after her mother got taken by Peacekeepers, and just doze in the warm air.

Jan was born in a small hut deep in District 9’s forest. His father was out hunting, when his mother went into labour. Even though there was no doctor, he was healthy child, and was born on the 9th of September. He went to school, and was a lively child throughout his first few years, well until the bullying started anyway. He was a natural talent at hunting, and loved making traps which caught animals. Although he wasn’t quite as handy with a bow, he could shoot an animal down from 430m using a slingshot.

His slingshot was, and has always been one of his most prized possessions, as he could easily defend himself using one. While hunting, he’d use special shaped rocks, which he usually made himself. Otherwise, he could use normal rocks, and small balls of metal. It doesn’t really matter. That’s also how he keeps himself fed. Hunting is the main way of earning scraps in District 9. So he had to be good at it, to support his grandparents, who live off a meager pension.

After completing his seventh year at school, he as fed up with everything, and instead of going to school, he ran deep into the forest, doing his favourite thing: Hunting. Now, instead of going to school, he hunts, bringing food to his grandparents’ house, and earning some money at the local market for certain luxuries, like blankets, or the occasional sweet. Sometimes he gets caught skiving off, and must go through the occasional whipping, but mostly he says it’s worth it. He’s also a talented singer, and often sings songs while hunting. Apparently, he makes the Mockingjays go silent.
