Appearance:
“It's not good to lie to yourself, Ariana. That's what my mum always warned me about. So I seek to always be truthful. I am good looking, I know that by now and I refuse not to acknowledge it. However, I'm not beautiful, nor am I anything special. I am average, I am normal, but I am who I choose to be.”
Well, if that's not the understatement of a century. Ariana definitely is not as striking or particular as other girls may be. She's not breathtaking, but she is natural and encompasses the pretty girl image perfectly without having to try hard. In fact, she does not care too much about her looks and if someone were to confront her with mascara, she would have no idea what to do with it. She is taller than most of the girls she knows, standing at roughly 1.78 m (or 5 ft 10 in). But being tall runs in her family, so she's felt comfortable with her height from an early age onwards.
Although for many people curls are considered a curse and not a blessing, that is the one trait she desperately wants. Her hair is not even completely straight. It annoys her that her hair is midway between being wavy and being straight. To Ariana, her hair is a constant, static mess. Technically, she could easily use a hair straightener – or a curling iron for that matter – but that would require physical effort and Ariana does not consider her appearance all that important in the end. Her hair is a simple light brown colour. Not mocha coloured, or hazelnut or like molten chocolate, or any of that actually. Just a normal kind of brown.
Her eyes are of a very light hazel colour, bordering on being grey. Ariana is farsighted, meaning that she has great difficulty seeing things up close, such as a book without wearing her glasses. She has great dislike for glasses, but finds the idea of contact lenses painful – not to mention rather expensive – and asks other people to read texts for her. It is rather unusual for such a young person like Ariana to be farsighted, as it is a symptom that comes with old age on most occasions.
Ariana is slim, but not unhealthily so. She loves to eat, but has a good metabolism that breaks down food very quickly, so she hardly ever gains any weight. She does not do a lot of sport, or outdoor activities in particular, growing up inside of laboratories so although she is slim, she is not very muscular at all and has skinny arms and legs.
It's difficult to describe Ariana's style, because she virtually has none. She prefers to wear her over sized, white lab coat most of the time over comfortable, casual clothing. She has a handful of pretty clothes, made up of a couple of dresses and nice shirts, but it is rather rare to see her in any of those clothes. Usually a pair of shorts and a t-shirt of some kind, paired with her signature black sneakers is just the right kind of clothing for Ariana. She is also one of those people who can wear the same clothing three days in a row and not care for a single minute what other people may think. Especially if she is standing right before some scientific discovery.

Personality:
“I know what is right and what is not."
Strong sense of morality
First and foremost and probably one of Ariana's strongest personality traits is her strong sense for what is right and what is wrong. She is one of those people who refuses to stand idly by while someone else is bullied and at the same time won't bat an eye when someone is punished severely for their misdeeds. She believes in righting the wrong in whatever way possible. Growing up, Ariana always felt that the Hunger Games were valid and right, considering that she believes in the greatest good for the greater number.
But then, when she became older, the true nature of the games and their horror struck her hard, especially when her best friend of the time, Belle was reaped. When Belle died, Ariana realised that even the most innocent of people had to suffer for the wrong doings of a whole generation before them. She decided that it was the Capitolites and their twisted perception of justice that in her opinion is completely in the wrong. From that day on, Ariana became a quiet but still threatening danger to the regime. In her mind she already made up her mind, upon hearing muffled rumours of an uprising, that she would escape one day and fight for what is essentially right.
Intelligent and rational
It's not unnatural for someone growing up in district six to quickly become adjusted with the sciences and become smart. But many people are smart and in district six almost everyone is blessed with brains or at least learns to use it over the years. Ariana, is intelligent. Both her parents being scientists, her father a physicist and her mother a chemist, Ariana literally grew up amongst chemicals and force fields. She had memorized the Periodic table of the elements at the age in which most children learn their alphabet. Instead of playing house at the age of eight, she studied plant growth and grew bacteria in petri dishes. She became obsessed with explosives throughout her pre-teen years and built her first bomb at the age of eleven. Her parents were absolutely thrilled. One setback on her intelligence is that Ariana is extremely rational. Without given evidence, she finds it very difficult to understand anything. She hardly ever is creative and finds that day-dreaming is an enormous waste of time and energy. This was one of the main reasons that Ariana found it difficult to believe that District 13 exists. That was before she met a certain wanderer – but more to that later.
Kleptomaniac
Instead of having any irrational fears – which would require for Ariana to be irrational, and that's near impossible – Ariana is a kleptomaniac. This means that she compulsively feels the need to steal things. She attempts to keep herself in check and manages to do that most of the time, but she has an almost impossible to withstand obsessive need to steal silver spoons. They don't have to be real silver, they just have to look silver. Usually, not unlike with a blackout, Ariana can not remember having stolen the spoon and then finds it very difficult to explain to someone why it is that she has a spoon, if she remembers not having stolen it. This has gotten her into quite a lot of trouble throughout the years and especially when working in the lab, she would often pocket spoons without consciously remembering ever having done so. She is well aware of her condition, but her pride won't allow for her to share this with many people. Her family knows of it, but not many others do.
Proud and stubborn
Ariana is a confident individual who is very proud of what she does and who she is. This prevents her from telling people of her kleptomania, afraid that she will be cast off as mentally unstable. Her stubborn side coincides with her pride when it comes to her farsightedness. She is too stubborn to wear her glasses or to put on contact lenses – not that she owns any – and refuses to let anyone know that she can't read anything close up. She will put on her glasses in the lab when she is sure that she is alone and won't be disturbed, mainly in order to read instructions and write down data, but if she finds herself in a situation in which she has to read something near other people, especially around friends, she will ask someone to read it, making up excuses such as having a migraine or being unable to read someones hand writing. Her rational side tells her that this is ridiculous, but her stubborn pride outshines her rationality most of the time.
Vivacious and rebellious
Ariana is a lively, spirited girl who has a lot of energy. This is a good thing most of the time, unless her temper gets in the way. Being a patient, calm and rather rational character, it takes a lot to make Ariana angry. Few people have ever seen her in a real temper, but if her angry side is sparked, it is sparked real good. Afterwards it takes longer to calm her back down and she is not very quick to forgive people after they have set her off once. Usually however, Ariana is ruled by her lively, spirited side. She is always in the mood to do something and has a sheer endless amount of energy when it comes to science or any other topic she is passionate about. Rebellion is almost second-nature to Ariana. She is not outright rebellious towards figures of authority of state heads. Instead, she can be extremely loyal to cause that fights for something she believes in. If this cause forces her to do something of a rebellious nature, then she will do so without pondering too much about it. This would be the case in her furious hatred for the Capitol and the hunger games in particular. Since these collide with her moral sense, she will go to rebellious lengths in order to achieve what she believes is right. She will not, however, do anything that goes against her ethical code.

History:
“I thought I knew who I was in the beginning. How can one person change my perception so much? How can one small tragedy affect my life so drastically? I'm changing my ways, I'm taking an untrodden path. I'm fighting for that one person."
Unlike so many other people, Ariana was fortunate enough to lead a happy, sheltered childhood. The only child to Gabrielle and James Alassë, she was spoiled endlessly and she was raised almost completely like an adult. Instead of dolls, Ariana had a chemistry set... you get the picture. Spending the greater part of her childhood inside the lab of her parents: her father being a physicist and her mother a chemist, gradually destroyed her social life. In school she was quiet and focused only on her work. Her teacher became worried and contacted her parents who are loving but quite oblivious for the most part.
Her mother immediately dragged a very reluctant eight-year old Ariana with her to a family friends house and introduced her to their nine-year old daughter Selenia. Unfortunately for Ariana, Selenia turned out to be the worst type of friend she might have hoped for. No, Selenia was not stuck up, nor was she sullen or mean. She was, in Ariana's shallow child-like opinion completely and utterly stupid. Heck, the kid did not even know what an electron is! For Ariana this was the worst kind of person her parents could have set her up with. Poor Selenia was not necessarily dumb, just in Ariana's standards, Selenia who did not love science was a lost cause. So throughout her next two years of school, Ariana's social life continued on a downward spiral. She called people acquaintances and worked diligently without speaking to anyone in particular. Her parents' worry increased and so they felt more than happy when Ariana brought her first friend back home at the age of thirteen.
Their friendship had been an accident. Belle had walked into Ariana's life as naturally as possible and she was to walk back out of it in only a few years. They met when Belle started flunking tests and Ariana was asked if she would help tutor Belle. At first Ariana felt superior and annoyed by the other girl. She acted not so differently than she had all those years ago with Selenia. Belle remained friendly and witty, often managing to turn their weekly tutoring lessons into the past part of Ariana's week. One day, seemingly out of the blue, Belle asked if Ariana had ever kissed anyone before. It was such a strange question that Ariana answered immediately and without contemplating it with the truth. Which was a “no”. She had never even considered boys as anything of interest. She usually was too interested in her studies to care about her classmates blossoming romances. Belle leaned across the table and kissed her. It was a short and somewhat awkward kiss that the inexperienced frequent in. Belle smiled her typical sheepish grin, shrugged and said, “neither have I.”
What followed wasn't a romance as much as it became a friendship. They did everything together. What Ariana lacked in style, Belle made up with her bluntness and quirky personality. They learned from each other. Belle was sweet in the way that Ariana was moral. So when Belle as reaped for the Hunger Games at the age of fifteen, Ariana lost the only friend she had ever had. She lost her world and ultimately, she lost her loyalty for the Capitol.
Ariana made up her mind then that she did not need to become a world-class scientist anymore. That wouldn't change the world she lives in. Instead, she decided that she would continuously work to get a place for college at the age of sixteen. This was not very hard to do. The tedious work kept her studious and distracted from the heart-ache she could have been experiencing. She kept her parents happy, who after all did not deserve any of this. She did not make it to college at sixteen after all, but she did get a place when she turned seventeen. Her plan involved running away once she turned eighteen. That way, her parents would not be to blame since she was now an adult.
Ariana always was indecisive about running away to a district she could not even be sure of existing. So eighteen came and went and she still had not abandoned home for her change. It was only when she met Devroux Creighton, an avox boy only a few years younger than herself. He wasn't from district six and appeared to be silently exploring the district. He could not speak and she felt really bad for him, considering his young age and state. Finally she was able to figure out that he belongs to a group of rebels that fight against the Capitol. Now that she had her evidence, thanks to Devroux, she was able to leave her district without feeling unsure of her decision any longer. She wanted to join the same uprising as Devroux, feeling drawn to the boy because of the hardships he had faced and that he wasn't broken, although he would have every reason to be. So Devroux became her second friend.
