I am more alert than I was going into yesterday. Committing murder does that apparently. My arm hair is standing on end, like during the lighting storms in Nine in the dead of the summer. I used to watch them as a little girl, mesmerized by the way the sky lit up, the tumultuous thunder. I had always liked rain. I turn my face upwards, peeking at the hazy sky. What I wouldn't give for some rain right now. I think, squinting at the purplish sun. Sweat rolls down my forehead and into my eyes. I pull out my water bottle and drink the last few gulps, good thing I came to the geyser or I'd die of thirst.
Wouldn't that suck? To come all this way and be killed by my own body? I chuckle and wipe at my forehead with my sleeve. I turn my toes in the direction of the geyser, calm and silent at the moment. I wonder how Zuka is doing now that she has food. She didn't die, or at least wasn't dead by anthem time last night. I really had meant it when I said we could be allies, although in hindsight, taking on an ally at this stage in the game probably wouldn't be a good move. Still, there was something that I liked about her, from way back to watching the reaping. I realize with a start that the reapings, that leaving my home happened just over a week ago.
I'm almost at the geyser now, and it seems to be waiting for me, with a great roar it explodes, sending heat in my direction like a wave. I lift my water jug, ready to make the lunge to fill it when I hear something. Like a crack and a breath in the same sound. My body freezes. I don't even know if it's real, but I know something is near me. My skin crawls, and I drop the jug on the ground with a hollow ponking sound.
My mace is in my hand and ready in an instant. I shrug my backpack off my shoulders and set it down on the ground as quietly as I can. I turn in a circle slowly, letting the other girl take over, survival girl. I tilt my head to the left and glance all around. I still can't see anything but I know it's out there.
The familiar fear of the arena crawls into my stomach and settles there, creating a nest of my innards. I swallow harshly, trying to keep it down, as long as I keep my cool, I can win this thing. Give 'em a show...
"Here, kitty kitty."
