Acuzio Ackley

WARNING: Harsh language PG13

Today, Kura’s hair was it’s usual mess. Unbrushed (I just made that a word) and clumped against his head. Pieces of it clung to his forehead in an unruly manner. His ripped jeans were a dark wash blue, and his orange t-shirt had a hole in the shoulder. Not that it mattered. It was the first thing he had grabbed that morning. The morning’s conversations ran through his head.

“Hey, Kura, how come you never flirt?”
“Flirt? Why the hell should I? There are better things to do. Woman aren’t good for anything.” Thoughts of his mother’s uselessness ran though his head. Over the years he had slowly forgotten about her kindness and motherly aspects. In his mind she had turned into a weak, pathetic person.
“I bet you’ve never had a girlfriend, Kura.”
“Fuck off.”
“So it’s true then, huh?”
“I could pick up any girl I wanted if I wanted to. But until a girl suddenly joins my gang and becomes a threat even to myself, I see no advantage in dating one.”
“Please, you couldn’t get any girl at all.”
“WHAT DID YOU SAY?” Acuzio had hoisted the boy off the ground and against the opposite wall.
“Prove me wrong then.” The boy spit.
Kura was not one to take words and tone like that from followers, but he was so worked up on proving them all wrong, he let it go.
“Find me a girl.”

So here he was. The girl was across from him, surely she wasn’t only a year younger than himself. The stupid chick looked twelve. He couldn’t believe he was doing this. She had long black hair, not unlike the colour of Kura’s. He knew some of his members were watching, so he would try his best to be ‘polite’. Pain shot threw his foot as he stepped on a rock. Should have worn shoes.

“Hey.” Acuzio called over to her. To Cadia. This is who they had chosen. He did not know why, but they had. “Name’s Acuzio. You’ve probably heard of me. If not, you know me now.” Of course everyone had heard of him (right?). “What exactly are you doing?”

Erm. More harsh language. Cadia likes to curse. XP))

Cadia could not, for all that she tried, understand books. It wasn’t that she couldn’t read- she did go to school until she had gone on the run- she just didn’t understand the point. Why should she care about this other person’s life when she had her own to worry about? Who wanted to read about someone else’s fictional family woes when her own parents (her own real parents) were dead at her own hand? Really, who wanted to read about anything fictional when it was exactly that- fiction? It was a waste of time, and it wasn’t going to help anyone with their life.

On top of it all, this fictional girl was a damn wimp. Couldn’t she solve anything without her brother’s help?

With a disgruntled sigh, Cadia closed the book she was trying to read and pushed it away. She’d have to remember to put it back later. Having a shelf of books for your customers to borrow was a nice idea for a café, she supposed, but she personally didn’t get the point. Oh well. She was perfectly happy with her tea.

At least, she was perfectly happy with her tea until some random boy decided to shove his voice into her thoughts. With a grimace, she turned to level a glare at the speaker- some idiot calling himself Acuzio who thought she should have heard of him. She ran through her mind briefly, just in case, but nothing came up- no surprise, seeing as she rarely talked to anyone long enough to take names or gossip about other people. Whoever he was, he was a mess. Not that she could really talk; she had been in the forest again this morning, and hadn’t bothered to change, so she was still in a pair of somewhat ripped-up jeans and a green t-shirt that was beginning to turn brown from all the dirt. At least her hair was decent, though- she had only just let it out of the braid, so it was a little more wavy and unruly than usual, but it was still untangled and more or less behaving.

She started to turn back to her mug, which was still clutched in her right hand, but he spoke again and she just had to look back up. What was she doing? What was she doing. She stared incredulously at the stranger, caught somewhere between laughter and burning anger. On the one hand, he had no right to be asking into her business; on the other hand, weren’t her actions pretty obvious?

She decided, unsurprisingly, on anger. “What does it look like I’m doing?” she snapped, rolling her eyes. “I’m drinking tea, dumbass.” As if to emphasize this, she raised the mug to her mouth and drained the rest of the liquid it held, then refilled it from the pot on the table. She was running low, she noted- she would have to order more. Normally she wouldn’t indulge, but she had a little extra money and she really liked this café. It was much better than the tea shop she had frequented until its owner had pissed her off badly enough that she never wanted to go back.

He was still watching her, Cadia noted out the corner of her eye. She began to fidget ever so slightly, her left hand wavering down toward the knife in her belt. She didn’t like this, not one bit. What did he want with her? There didn’t seem to be any recognition in his face, but he seemed to want something.

After a moment, she decided he wasn’t going anywhere and started glaring again. “And what I’m about to do if you don’t f**k off or at least stop staring like a freak,” she added to her last comment in as sweet a tone as she could manage, “is smash this mug over your thick head and use the shards to castrate you.” Her voice returned to normal, and she narrowed her eyes at him, trying to figure out what was going through his head. “What is your problem? I’m not that interesting.” She shook her head and took another sip of tea, eyeing him over the rim. Stupid stranger.

Dumbass? Who the hell is she calling dumbass? Surely, she was not talking to him. No way. No one who was not a member of his gang ever talked to him like that without leaving with a broken body part. But none of them had ever been girls either. Acuzio inhaled deeply. This may be harder than he thought, but there was no way he was going to admit that.

What? What did she say to me? Clearly, he had heard her wrong. No one in their right mind would threaten to hit him with a mug and castrate him with the pieces. No. No. No. What the hell did she just say to me? His blood was certainly starting to boil. And a lot of times there was no cooling him down. The girl spoke again. Well of course you're not bloody interesting! He had only been sent over here because of the stupid argument this morning.

Kura took a deep breath and steadied himself. He took a seat in the empty chair across from her, all the while noticing that she kept giving him dirty looks over her mug. "So.. why are you just here sipping tea?" He asked, trying to hold back any anger and aggression. Not that he really cared. She herself was a wreck anyways. Messy long hair. And her shirt was covered in dirt. What did she do, take a shower in it?

He turned to look back at where his group might be watching from. When Kura didn't see anything out of the ordinary, he turned his attention back towards the girl. "You got a name?" Not that he really cared to know it. Not that he even thought he'd remember it. But it was a polite thing to ask, wasn't it? People did that often. Not that he cared what other people did..

He didn’t look particularly happy with her comments. An amused smile tried to twitch at Cadia’s lips, and she pushed it down relentlessly. No need to make him madder; mad people did stupid things, and he seemed plenty stupid as it was. Or maybe not stupid- maybe he just happened to be as socially useless as she was.

No, she decided, he was definitely dumb. Intelligent people did not get up and deliberately move closer to someone who was glaring at them diligently enough to make it clear they would not appreciate further interaction. Even she knew that, and she couldn’t read social cues to save her life. She widened her eyes and pursed her lips very slightly, giving him a sort of “really now?” look without saying anything. (She really didn’t feel like talking to this guy.)

Then he spoke. Her brows came slightly closer together than normal as her expression changed from one of annoyed consternation to the sort of expression you give people when they’ve just asked a particularly stupid question. In this case, actually (if you asked Cadia, anyway), it was his second obvious question in the space of as many minutes. “I like tea,” she said, dryly but with no trace of aggression this time. The pointless nature of his inquiries made him no less a threat, of course, so she still kept her hand near her knife, but there was no point in antagonizing him any further. Yet. She didn’t want to start a fight and get kicked out of this place; then she would have to go back to the other shop for her tea, and that did not amuse her. At all.

Another question. She raised an eyebrow at him, trying to decide if this was an interrogation, a pathetic attempt at getting to know a stranger, or something else entirely. She hadn’t been asked this many questions since... well, since Kale, really, and then before that it had been years. “Yeah, I’ve got a name,” she said with a very slight nod. “Most people do.” She made no offer to give it to him; he hadn’t asked for that, after all. Mind you, if he had, he still wouldn’t have gotten it, but she didn’t need to make that clear just yet. It was more fun to sit here and be deliberately dense.

It wasn’t like he could complain about how she didn’t respond to social cues. He was the one who had gotten up and come to sit at her table, never mind that he wasn’t invited and was in fact not wanted. Cadia didn’t want to chase him off yet, though. She was becoming increasingly curious about his intentions- and even a little anxious. If something bad was going on here, she wanted to know what it was.

She ran out of tea, and nothing came out of it when she tried to pour from the pot. She set the mug down and began aimlessly spinning it, pulling with her thumb and pushing with her fingers so that she didn’t have to actually move her hand. The entire time, her gaze sat calmly on the Acuzio boy. Was he going to do anything of import, or was he going to go away already so she could go order a refill?

Why was this girl toying with his mind? No one did this. Actually, he couldn't remember anyone ever talking to him like this. What exactly went through that mind of hers? His face was turning red from anger, he could feel it. I like tea. What kind of answer was that? Clearly the girl liked it. She was drinking it! When he had asked her that question, he had more or less meant why was she here doing nothing exactly. Was her head so thick that she didn't understand such simple questions?

Acuzio noticed his hands were balled into fists and he quickly removed them from the table. And what about her other answer? Yeah, I’ve got a name, most people do. What the hell was with that? Just looking at this girl was making his stomach churn now. Who did she think she was? "Obviously, you have a name." He spoke through gritted teeth. And it took almost everything he had to lift his head and smile politely at her. "Would like to tell me your name?" Now he realized what he was doing. The girl could easy through that in his face, so he tried adding something. "What is the name your parents gave you when you were born?"

He smiled to himself. That was a direct question if he'd ever heard on (which he hadn't). She had to answer that correctly if she was going to answer it all. There clearly was no way to avoid answering it. He had been specific and polite. This isn't so hard. His mood was actually lifting a bit now that he was slowly taking control of the conversation. I think I understand now. If his members were watching they must have been a little suprised. But that would only be if they could see far enough away that a small smile danced at the edge of his lips.

Feeling quite a bit most confident (if that was even possible), he caled over a waiter. "Tea for the lady. And I'll have.." Kura remembered he didn't have any money on him. He normally didn't, but now it seemed like a stupid thing. He had really come all the way down here to ask this girl out and hadn't even brought his wallet. Now he was not one who had ever had experience with girl's, but even the stupidest knew you didn't go near a girl without anything in your wallet. He could.. just not pay later...

That seemed like the best option. "I'll have a soda. Hurry up." Acuzio was becoming thirsty by the minute around the girl. Maybe girls in general just made him awkward, but he would know. It seemed he was losing all his power and confidence around her. Who the hell is she? This kept being asked, and he still had no answer.

((OOC- About time, huh? Third time is, indeed, the charm. In fact, this is probably actually better than my other two attempts today. Sad, but true. XP

Hmm. Should I continue to put language warnings when it's kind of a thread-wide trend?))

Out the bottom of her eyes, which were still cranked to full glare mode and glued to his face, Cadia noticed that her counterpart’s hands had shifted into fists. They disappeared from the table, and she followed suit with her left hand. It came to rest on her leg, in easy reach of her knife. She didn’t pull it out; Acuzio didn’t seem to be looking for a fight, so it was useless to initiate anything, but she wanted to be ready if one of those fists turned into a blow. She didn’t exactly need a knife to counter a punch, but she was a little more comfortable with it close by. She did have more training in blades than hand-to-hand combat, after all.

Luckily, he just seemed to want to keep talking. Or perhaps unluckily, because it meant she had to listen to him yabber and pry. “If it’s obvious, then why ask?” she quipped. How long did she had to pretend to be dense before he got too bored or too exasperated to keep messing with her? She opened her mouth to say “no” to the next question, then closed it in annoyance as he modified it to be harder to throw back in his face.

That was enough. She wasn’t good enough at messing with people’s words to do anything but answer that question straight up- or just refuse to answer it. She could always give a fake name, of course, or even the one she currently went by (the Peacekeepers, if they really were searching for her, wouldn’t be looking for a girl named Cadia). That was the smart route, because refusing to answer would probably lead to more questions, and the ones he was already asking were intrusive enough. Smart be damned, though- she was mad, and if he didn’t know it already, he was about to.

“You know,” she said in a tone that was only just too civil to be a snarl, “you’ve given me no reason to answer that.” She held up a hand to stall whatever he was about to say, if anything. This was her ranting time, not his continue-to-be-a-pain-in-the-ass time. “I understand that you’ve given me your name and that it would be polite to reciprocate. However, I’m not too interested in being polite to nosy assholes who show up at my table uninvited and then- don't- leave, despite me making it perfectly clear I want them gone. If you’re looking for a girl, go pick another. If you’re looking for conversation, learn how to go about it without being a prick.” She stopped, then tacked on one last comment. “And then pick someone else anyway, because I now don’t like you and will not appreciate further attempts no matter how courteous you suddenly become.” Really, she just didn’t like conversing with anyone, but that was beside the point, so she let that fact slide as she lapsed into silence. Silence, and spinning her mug and glaring at him. She could leave, but she would much rather make him leave. Departing now would stink of surrender.

He opened his blasted mouth yet again, and Cadia was once more reduced to staring in mixed confusion and anger. Had he just bought her a drink? Yes, it seemed he had. Well, that absolutely wouldn’t do at all. With an exasperated sigh, she reached into her pocket and pulled out some coins, which she then began sorting in her hands. It required taking her left hand away from her knife, but it also meant that she didn't have to set them down on the table where he could reach out and steal them. She wasn’t willing to take money from a stranger like this (she was not some kind of charity case- she could pay for her own tea!), but she was willing to steal it, and for all she knew he had the same mindset.

As she began to pocket some of the coins, keeping out just enough to pay for a refill of jasmine tea, something else occurred to her- something that she should have realized long ago, never mind that it had only been a few moments since he had spoken. The very first thought in her mind shouldn’t have been about money; it should have revolved around how easy it would be for him to bribe the workers to poison or drug her drink. She hadn’t given him any motive that would stand up to law, but that didn’t matter. Even if he wasn’t on some kind of undercover Peacekeeper mission to drag her back to her birthplace and execute her (which she doubted he was, but you never knew), she had annoyed him. For some people, that was more than enough of a reason to off each other.

She wanted to slap herself for taking more than a split second to realize this danger, but that would be too conspicuous and would waste another few precious seconds. Instead she stood as casually as possibly and slipped the money back into her pocket. On a whim, she picked up the book she’d been trying to read earlier; she could put it back on the way out, or use it as a weapon if she had to. (It'd be more useful as a weapon than it was as entertainment, anyway.)

“Thank you, but the refill won’t be necessary,” she told the waiter, who was looking at her with a slightly bizarre expression. She didn’t feel like explaining, so she just turned to the boy who had come to sit with her. “Goodbye,” she said firmly.

With that, she turned to leave, careful to stay at an angle to the table so she could see if he tried to come after her. If luck was with her, he wouldn’t, but Cadia had never been the most fortunate of people.
