Nessalyn
It had been almost a year now that Nessalyn had been having medicine imported illegally into the district. Despite her efforts, her mother was doing no better, and Ness knew that it was only a matter of time. Her death was eight years in the making, and it was silly to hope that her condition would get better when it had only ever gotten worse. Still, Ness liked to believe that she was helping some, even if all she did was inject an syringe.
Standing at the foot of her mother's bed now, Ness sighed softly, watching her mother's sleeping form, her chest moving up and down in a slow, steady rhythm. Her face was pale and gaunt; ghostlike. Nothing like the women she'd been eight years ago. It was hard, but Ness was still able to conjure up images of the afternoons she and her mother had spent in the kitchen teach her sister, Hilde, how to bake. Her father had been at home a lot more then, not having to work extra shifts, being able to participate in various family activities. Nobody had been at risk of being reaped for the games, and everything was just...simpler.
That seemed like a lifetime ago. Ness had to actually stop and think for a minute when the last time her father had actually been home for dinner. Four of them were eligible to be tributes in the games, and her mother was in so much pain, she was always bedridden, not even able to walk to the kitchen, let alone spend hours baking.
Smiling sadly, Ness moved to the side of the bed, and touch her mother's arm lightly. "Momma?" Ness' mother opened her eyes slowly."Mom, your medicine." Mrs. Stykes only blinked. Recently, it had become too much for her to even speak. Ness offered her a weak smile as she deftly rolled up her mother's nightgown sleeve, and injected the medicine into the crook of her arm. It was so pathetic really, trying to do anything to help, when even this medicine - what she got imported from District Six - even the strongest painkillers did nothing to ease the pain. If Ness was any braver, she realized that perhaps euthanasia wasn't as cruel as she'd originally thought...
Wiping all thought of that variety of her mind, Ness made a hasty exit from the room, now that the medicine had been administer. She didn't want to plague her mother with excessive activity when it wasn't needed. Besides, what was the use in conversing with a woman who was unable to reply? Careening past the table, Ness carefully set the bottle on the table. It was almost empty, and it would be at least another two weeks until another bottle could be delivered to her. Her poor mother. Sighing, Ness made her way out onto the front porch. Her two youngest siblings, Armand and Trina were playing in the dirt. Her other siblings were at school, apart from Hilde, who had dropped out this year to assist in the care of their mother, much like Ness had. She'd gone off to the baker to purchase a loaf of bread. Bread instead of school. Nessalyn knew how much it must kill their father to know two of his children weren't getting the education they deserved. No matter. Ness felt that she was getting an education. Medicine was something she was interested in, and mixing various medicines and herbs together was worth far more than math problems or history.
Ness sighed and rested her chin in her hands, and looked out past the yard, surveying the compact dirt road. She could see the top of the electric fence slightly past it, and wondered what it was like past that, in District Six, with all their sciences and medicine. Ness wished that one day, maybe she could go there, just to see it. But who was she kidding? That wasn't happening. She was stuck here in District 12 until she died. Or, until she was reaped, sent to the Games and then killed. That was how it was always going to be, no matter what happened.
ooc- I haven't posted Ness in a long, long time so this might not make a whole lot of sense. I just really wanted a new thread with her is all.
