Sammie was a timid girl. Never spoke up, talked unless spoken to, or caused trouble. She minded her own, and people minded her, and that's all she could really ask for, she guessed.
But still, her life had been nothing but unlucky. Growing up in the Seam was bad enough. She never had enough food to feed herself, let alone her dad too. It was a good thing she had no siblings. To have her mother die as a baby wasn't a plus, either.
Sammie wasn't an adventurous type of girl. She always minded the rules, always did what she was told. So, the fact that she was planning on venturing in the woods today was a rare sight. She loved animals though. Always had. She had often caught herself staring at the wild dogs, rabbits, and deer from the other side of the fence.
Sammie followed the well used path down to the fence that marked the border between District Twelve and the woods. She had found a huge hole on the bottom of the fence a few years ago, and planned to use it today.
Wriggling into the dirt, she scooted herself under. When she was on the other side, she spun around, green eyes darting around to see if anybody noticed. Not a soul in sight.
Continuing onward, she shuffled through the forest. The forest gave off weird sounds. Sudden rustling bushes, the song of a mockingjay in the distance. She had been walking for about ten minutes when she heard a noise. It came from behind. Spinning around, Sammie's heart beat faster. She knew that there were dangerous things in the forest.
Sammie saw nothing. Still freaked, she began to run in the direction that she had been headed. Not seeing the large tree root in the pathway of her foot, she tripped. Hard.
Sprawling on the ground, her ankle throbbed. Oh please, please, please don't let it be broken. There's no way that I can get home with a broken ankle...... She thought. But her prayers had no effect. Standing up, she found she could put no weight on her ankle whatsoever. When she tried it the first time, she let out a loud yelp as a sharp pain shot up her leg. She plopped down on the ground. How am I going to get home? Nobody can hear me. Probably something will come and get me before someone finds me......
Sammie knew that the occasional person from the Seam sneaked out into the forest to hunt, but the chances of one coming across her was slim. The only way to get back was to crawl. Starting to do just that, she inched slowly across the ground. The pain was bad, but not as bad as when she had stood up.
