I listened hard, trying to detect any signs of movement from the trees surrounding me. I didn't really need to hunt today, but I liked to stock up, especially when we might have to pack up and leave at a moment's notice. My pack was already full of game, but Daniel refused to return to the campsite right now. It depresses me, he had said, to see our sleeping bags sitting in the middle of the forest, instead of our backyard. It reminds me that we will never return to District Eleven. Reminds me that we will never see mom and dad again. For an eight-year-old, he was pretty smart.
So here we were, our knives drawn (Daniel was very happy that I let him finally use one), our packs full, with the promising thought of a full belly when we went to sleep that night. I heard movement out towards my left, and brushed it off, thinking it to be just another fat rabbit. We had enough of those, plus it surely wouldn't fit into our already full knapsack. But when the sound got closer, I began to worry. The footsteps were far to heavy to be a mere rabbit. A wolf? A bear maybe? If so, maybe I should tell Daniel to run? But no, I could not. Daniel, being as stubborn as he is, would stay right where he was and help me fight it. My heart warmed at the thought.
I glanced down at my timid dagger, that would surely not stand against a ninety-pound animal. I placed it in my belt, and reached for the small axe I kept with me on hunts like these. It might not be as good as a bow and arrows, but it was better than the knife. I raised it above my head, praying Daniel would make it out of this.
And then, as the footfalls grew closer still, I realized something. This thing had only two feet. It was human. I lowered my axe, Daniel kept his knife raised. I looked at him questioningly, but he only shook his head. What was that all about. I held my breathe, looking in the general direction of the noises, and hoped this person would reveal themself soon.
