Age:
Gender: Male
District/Area: The Capitol
Appearance:
Maverick's clean, classic Capital looks have been his greatest asset. He has a mop of curls, which naturally tend towards the color of mahogany, with some honey highlights in the summer. Of course, the fashion of the Capitol occasionally dictates something much more dramatic, and Maverick is happy to roll with the haute couture punches. His hair has ranged from a knot of orange braids to a striped faux hawk. Presently he has let his curls grow to just over his eyebrows, and has them dyed a jet black.Personality:
Green-grey eyes peek out from beneath his heavy eyebrows. In fact his forehead seems to sit directly, heavily on his eyes, sometimes cutting into them sinisterly. But the color, although muddied, is beautiful. He has the kind of eyes you want to forgive. They are highlighted by thick eyelashes and a strong, albeit short, nose.
His lower lip juts out considerably more than the upper, but hardly anyone notices. He has a clean, straight set of teeth to match his sharp, cut cheekbones and jaw. His face shape is caught somewhere between square and a heart. It is the line that defines him.
Maverick keeps himself in peak physical condition, although it's not strictly necessary, as he'll never be a Tribute. Still, as he aims to be a public figure, he is sure to exercise and eat carefully, when he can control it. He stands a bit short at 5'9" and for that reason has developed incredible posture. You will never find Mav slouching.
The first time you meet Maverick, or perhaps even if you just spot him on the streets, you'd think him lively. Charming, even. That smile. It is so much more than a part of his appearance. It is him - his persona, his strength and flaw. It opens his face, lights a room and closes a door all at once. He uses his smile as a weapon; you would be a fool to think otherwise.History:
Outwardly, Mav is an incredibly social creature, boisterous and chatty and sometimes funny. Even better, he'll laugh at your jokes, even the really bad ones. He never runs out of conversation, and he is always looking for the next piece of gossip. You might find him confident or self-centered; he mostly likes to talk about the games, his aspirations, and the latest trends.
Of course inwardly Maverick is ambitious, in a violent, twisting way. He longs for the spotlight, and feels robbed that he could never compete, never put himself voluntarily in the hearts and minds of Panem. But, over the years, he has come to realize that he has something more powerful - loyalty. The Capitol, after all, is the guiding force of the nation. Its citizens are not rebels, are not criminals. A prejudice has wormed his way into his heart, although he is careful never to show it. At least, not publicly.
If you dig deep enough, you might find some of this bitterness, but it slowly being replaced by determination. Maverick knows what he wants now, and with every day he's finding new doors and new secrets, things that will lead him on a path to the hunger games, as its host, or gamemaker, or whatever other role he might find suitable.
Maverick was born on the night a distant Hunger Games winner was crowned. His father couldn't be bothered to miss the showing of the games for his birth; his mother watched on the television in her birthing room. As their first child, the Capitol pair found him to be good enough. After all, he had all the right coloring, and a mean grip, even as a baby.Codeword: Odair
For the first seven years of his life, Maverick lived the terrible life of an only child. Whenever he could command his parents' attention, he did, and when he couldn't, he made them pay for it. His mother worked as a hair dresser, while his father worked in the Capital "doing important business," which wasn't explained to Maverick until he was much older.
Things changed entirely when his little sister, Midnight, came into the family. While Mav was already proving himself to be clever, Midnight clearly had all the right features to be a great beauty, which his parents valued more. Besides, she was the baby, and Maverick felt the first sting of jealousy, which would poison that small seed of inner goodness. Maverick learned quickly that if he tormented Midnight, he would get into trouble. So he taunted her as she grew, destroyed her confidence and youthful optimism until she became a shadow, albeit a beautiful one.
His parents eventually caught on, but by the time Maverick was a teenager, the damage had already been done. They began to distance themselves, to treat him as an adult. His father even tried to bring him to one of his operations, but the Capitol simply would not let anyone else - even a member of his family - see how Avoxes were made. Maverick left disappointed.
He watched the games avidly throughout his youth, hungering for the chance to prove himself. His family thoroughly disgusted him; his father, who held a privileged position, so rarely spoke about his work, and always seemed tired and depressed. His mother, he knew, hated him. And Midnight... well, so little of her personality remained, Mav at least found her tolerable.
At his peers, though, Maverick excelled. He learned early that information was power, and gossip was the strongest of all. He watched those in the Capitol who were popular and well liked, and learned from them. Mostly, he watched the host of the games. Mav had a natural charisma, and he used it to draw people closer, to choose his friends. Now time will only tell if his strategies will pay off, and if he will have his chance in the spotlight.
