A heart attack is sleeping in your chest,
waiting 'til the timing is best;
So make a move while you're still breathing.
People seemed to have a tendency to avoid his gaze these days, Lachlan noticed. Whether it was because they had their suspicions about what truly happened to Amarante that took her life, or because his 'don't come close, don't touch, don't even bother looking to me or I'll rip your arm off' aura was finally working he didn't know. Not that he particularly cared. He preferred things this way, after all. He'd never been very social in the first place.
Lachlan slid the hunk of meat he'd taken from the freezer further up his sleeve and stuck his hands into his pockets. His breath frosted the air; winter used to be his favorite time of the year - mostly because Amarante always hoped for snow, and what she liked he did too - but now it merely brought him better-left-alone memories. The teen focussed his thoughts instead on the playful pups whose mother had been injured by God-knows-what. Two more... one... this one. Lachlan turned into the deserted alley and heard the soft snuffling that made him smile slightly.
He whistled, and smiled again when both the 'children' rushed out to meet him, tumbling over one another to reach him first. Lachlan grinned, and bent to pick up the first one, a little black and tan with beautiful eyes. "And how are you this fine day?" he asked it, receiving a cheerful lick in return. The other golden pup ran around his feet, yipping in indignation at being left out.
The teenager grinned again, and settled the first pup on the floor to pick up the second. He was rewarded for his 'kindness' with saliva all over his face.
A soft whine caught his attention, and Lachlan glanced over at the limping mother. Her dark coat was badly matted - Lachlan wanted to clear up the mats, but she was distrustful and pretty vicious. The whine was for the food she knew he had somewhere on him; he saw her black nose twitching, catching the scent of the meat.
"You look better," he observed, setting the puppy on its feet before taking out the piece of meat. "Will you eat from my hand without leaving me with none today?" The dog sniffed disdainfully. Lachlan grinned again. "Thought so."
He set the meat on the floor, and moved away to let the bitch eat in peace. The puppies skipped over to him and began to play.[/color]
When you were mine, was I for you,
Just one cheap thrill to help you make it;
Dammit I hope you didn't fake it.
