I wonder what it's like to be a butterfly.
I know that it's a random thought and all, but the idea comes suddenly and unexpectedly just as I pass by a small rock that could almost be in the shape of one of the pretty flying creatures. I walk a few steps past the rock before I stop and turn back to it, but when I glance at it again it looks nothing like a butterfly, but rather a heart. No matter what the rock resembles, I can't just leave it sitting there on the ground. It's a special rock, and it can't be left to be trampled on by random passersby. It has to be a sign of some sort, but a sign of what? I would first have to figure out whether it is truly a butterfly or a heart, and then I would have to actually find out what that would be a sign of.
Do I even need a sign to tell me something?
No. I probably don't.
I walk hurriedly back to the stone and pick it up between the grimy fingers of my right hand. It's softer than I expected it to be, and when I rub my fingers along it's surface I find that it isn't at all malleable, but strong and tough. Nothing like a butterfly, but didn't I decide to give up on that idea? I don't need guidance, I don't need a sign. I'm not looking for anything, so why am I seeing importance in this teeny tiny little slab of rock? It's special, I'll give it that much. Not just any rock can be shaped like a heart- and it's definitely a heart. Butterflies are soft and fragile, but a human heart? A heart will keep beating with every passing moment until it can't any longer. It has a strength and endurance far greater than a butterfly has. Compared to most creatures, a butterfly is weak.
Except for the poisonous ones. They don't count.
No, I don't want to be a butterfly.
Being a heart would be absolutely disgusting, though. Lots and lots of blood pumping through you at every passing moment, and then always having to work to keep beating? If I were a heart, I would not be able to handle it. I would probably be one of those sickly, lazy hearts that gives up after a short while. I really hate working, especially when my dad asks me to help him with the animals. Not that I mind the animals much, but a lot of it is grueling work. It's a waste of time in my opinion, but there really isn't anything that I can do about it.
Butterflies are really pretty.. perhaps I would want to be a butterfly. And then, oh! Flying would be wonderful. To feel the air rushing past you as you glide along through the sky, seeing everything from a different point of view; I would love it. I wonder if I'll be reincarnated as a butterfly when I die. That would be nice, but I wouldn't really be a butterfly for long. Do they live for very long? I doubt it, being bugs and all.
Shaking my head and slightly jarring the tangled mass of hair that sits atop it, I bring my left hand to my scalp and run my hand through it. I haven't washed in a few days, but it seems clean enough. Not nearly as difficult to manage after I've put off washing for at least two weeks, though I don't usually do that anymore. My hair will usually be so tangled that it hurts to comb it out, and I really dislike that. It's a waste of time, but I guess it takes less time to wash occasionally than it does to comb out my hair after putting it off.
I begin walking again, my gait slow and leisurely as I twirl the heart-butterfly stone around my fingertips. I don 't really have anywhere important that I need to go, but I enjoy not ever really having a destination. It's really fun, just leaving the house in the morning and going. New adventures everywhere and new people to talk to; every day is different, and that's the best part.
Who am I going to meet today? I stop once again and gaze around the sidewalk excitedly, searching for someone to talk to. There really aren't that many people out today, but I don't hesitate to greet the first person that I meet in a tone that isn't as quiet as it probably should be.
"HI! I'm Antimony. Who are you?"
