leaving off from the last of the Return trilogy. enjoy.
Elena brushed her hair back from her face. Everything should be alright. She and Stefan were together, and officially engaged. Everyone was happy. Almost.
She turned into the boarding house driveway. Stefan was sitting on the porch. Her heart sped up, then she frowned a little, feeling his now ever-present grief. It had only been about a month since his brother, Damon, had died. She hurried out of the car, walking up to sit next to him. He attempted a smile. And how are you love?
She smiled. "I've been good." she whispered to him. "I'm just really happy to be back with Aunt Judith, and Margaret, and Robert..." she looked in his eyes, green as oak leaves. She brought her hand up to smooth down his curly black hair. "He just wanted to be remembered. You got to say goodbye at least." They had been spending the last month comforting each other. But it had only seemed to make them both sadder, especially him when she recounted the times Damon had lost control of himself out of worry for the brother he claimed to hate.
Stefan drew her closer. "At least." He agreed shortly. He took a deep breath. "I wonder what Meredith's news is?" He changed the subject abruptly.
She thought. "Well..." She said. "Something about her brother probably. She's been talking about trying to find him all the time." He nodded and she whispered "Come on, lets go inside." and slowly got to her feet, pulling him up with her.
Gah. Issues there. Skipping ahead a ways to that night.
They sat in the awkward silence. Then Elena started to say something, but Stefan shushed her. "Stefan..." This time they all heard the call from outside. Everyone except Stefan exchanged disbelieving glances, but Stefan had already moved hurriedly to the door. He flung it open.
Stefan fell back a step, disbelieving what his eyes were telling him. "Damon?" He whispered softly. His brother met his eyes. His mind was telling him it wasn't possible. Damon was dead, he couldn't be here! Yet he sat next to the boardinghouse, leaning over onto the porch and sopping wet from the rain. "It can't be you. You died. It's impossible..." That was what he heard himself saying.
Damon smiled wryly. "I know I died. I was there." His eyes betrayed pain though his voice was falsely cheerful. Stefan started to come out of the house but was stopped by Matt hanging onto his arm.
"We don't know it really is him."
Stefan paused, and then turned back to his brother, or at least his brother's impersonator. "Alright. I'm going to ask you a question only three people know the answer to. I'm warning you, if you're just someone using my brother's image I will kill you slowly." His voice was sharp and ruthless. He hesitated. "When you died, what did you say dying felt like?" His green eyes were icy.
Damon smiled slightly, an unrealistic parody of his old 1000 kilowatt smile, but on and off just as quickly. He shivered and let his head rest on the arm he had thrown over the edge of the porch before saying "That it was a little bit like going to sleep... And a little bit like flying." he closed his eyes.
Stefan's eyes widened. He walked to his brother and knelt on the porch next to his head. "Can you stand?" He asked gently. Damon shook his head. Stefan turned to Matt. "Here, help me get him in." He whispered. He stood and walked down the porch steps, putting his hands under Damon's shoulders as Matt came and lifted his feet. Between the two of them they got him up, but Stefan immediately stopped when his brother gasped in pain upon him moving his hands down to Damon's elbows so as to hold him more securely. He knitted his eyebrows together, but Damon, tight-lipped with pain, just shook his head slightly. They managed to get back into the house and set Damon on the couch, which Bonnie and Meredith had both vacated. Immediately Bonnie sprang up and rushed over, while Elena paused for a millisecond to take in Stefan's worried and frightened expression before doing the same.
Meredith was of course practical as ever. "I'll go get some towels and blankets." She volunteered. Stefan nodded, a lump forming his throat as he turned his attention to his brother.
"You're hurt, obviously. What's wrong?" He immediately said tensely.
Damon moved his head slightly to look into his brother's eyes. I think you already know. Do you remember? Elena and Bonnie, having somehow heard every word, exchanged glances. They all remembered how Damon had died. A branch had pierced his heart, and the wood had spread through his body, putting him in excruciating pain and eventually poisoning him.
Stefan hesitated. "Here let me try to help." he said softly. He knelt on the floor and grabbed his brother's hand, channeling Power into him. He dropped it almost immediately "I'm sorry. I can't." He clenched his hands into fists as Damon's face twisted in pain.
"No. I didn't think you'd be able to anyway." he gasped. At that point Meredith came back, holding about five blankets and three towels. Stefan gave her a greatful look. He hesitated and then just put his hand on his brother's back to help him sit up. Mistake. Damon gasped and a faint sound, almost a wimper, escaped his lips and Stefan hurriedly moved his hand.
His eyes got extremely wide. "Alright, take your jacket off. I have to see how bad it is." Damon nodded and did so, slowly. They all exchanged shocked looks.
The inside of the jacket, and Damon's chest and back, were covered in blood. There was a ragged hole, starting in his back, just over where his heart was, and a slightly smaller one at the corresponding spot on his chest. Blood was pulsing sluggishly from both. Stefan stood up suddenly, and, so fast he was a blur, left the room and came back with bandages. He knelt back down and gently did his best to handle the grisly wounds. "Alright, that should get the bleeding stopped..." Everyone was looking around helplessly. Finally, just to have something to do, he grabbed a towel from Meredith and wrapped it around his brother, who was still soaked and now either shivering or just trembling. Satisfied Damon was dry enough that he wouldn't get the blankets wet and chill himself further, he Elena and Bonnie started piling the covers on him as he sank back, laying on his side, they all heard his shallow breathing. Stefan just shook his head and muttered, "This isn't enough." incomprehensibly. He turned to the others, pleading with his eyes. Bonnie was the first to get it, standing and going to get a knife from who-knows-where. She closed her eyes and sliced her palm open. Immediately she knelt beside Damon's head, Stefan having hurriedly vacated the spot. She put her hand to his mouth and they all watched as he reflexively swallowed. Elena and Stefan each clutched one of his hands now, as if it would help. Bonnie was just starting to get dizzy when she pulled her hand away.
Damon's eyes opened to slits and she distinctly heard the thought That was a bad idea, you don't have all that much blood to give little redbird.
She couldn't help thinking back You died for me. The least I can do is try to get you back on your feet.
Elena grimaced "God I should've realized that." and they all knew what she was thinking. Her blood was special, it could've helped him more. She shook her head and bandaged up Bonnie's hand.
Matt spoke up. "Well just that isn't going to be enough is it? We should all probably stay over and then just alternate." They all nodded. He continued. "I'll go call my mom. I think we all should just let somebody know where we are." Everyone nodded again, and the girls all left the room, cell phones in hand.
Elena wondered what she was going to say to Aunt Judith. She finally settled for partial truth. "Aunt Judith?"
"Hey Elena, what's up?"
She took a deep breath. "I'm going to need to stay over here for the night."
Stony silence, then "Why?"
Elena's reply came in a rush. "Well Stefan's older brother is here and he's sick so Stefan asked us all to stay, I'm pretty sure as much for emotional support as to take care of him. He's really worried and his brother's sort of a friend of mine too. You know him actually." She said the last as she knew that hearing that the nice young man she had met the previous year was part of the equation would almost certainly make her aunt say yes. "Do you remember that guy Damon that Robert invited over?"
"Yes..."
"Well he's Stefan's older brother, he just goes by a different last name... but thats him." and of course Aunt Judith said yes, asking if there was anything they could do to help.
