The oldest son in a family of six, the
eighteen year old has a future. Not just
a regular future but one that will lead to
great fortune. The pride and joy of
the family, this young man lives life as it
is
and socialising with friends. What could
possibly be complicated about this life?[/center]
Storm: Did his parents choose his name because they
believed he came into the world by a storm? Nope.
They just simply liked the name Storm, particularly
because the name began with an “S”. Other than that,
they thought it would be interesting to name their kid
that, crossing out the initial decision to name him
Maximilian.
Maximilian: His parents had considered naming him
Maximilian but decided to leave it as a middle name.
They still call him Maximilian in their minds, because
they believe that name is what represents him the most.
Wie: A family name that he is proud to hold.
From a family of rather tall people, Storm has a height
of 6’1”, making him the tallest one in the family.
Being the only son, it actually isn’t difficult to find himself
taller than the rest, even his father is an inch shorter.
He doesn’t know how to comprehend his height, unsure
if it is a blessing or a curse. He supposes the height
gives him some advantage when it comes to having
to be authouritative, but it could also be a bad thing
if he is trying not to be spotted, a rare occurrence at
that but still a reasonable consideration.
The rest of his build is completed with a natural weight
of 160 pounds, most coming from the balance of the
muscles from working on the fields and the diet the
family lives off on. Most would argue that he looks
healthy enough, that there is no possibility that he
comes from a lower class family. It is true that his ribs
have not started showing yet, but to say that he is
completely healthy would be an understatement. His
stomach would argue otherwise, but because he
looks otherwise alright, his skeptical friends never
believe him when he says he needs to keep working
so there could be more food on the table. After all,
no starving child looks like he’s been well-fed for the
past eighteen years of his life.
His eyes are small with dark brown irises circling around
the blended in pupil. Just as he is at one end of the
spectrum in terms of his height, he is also at the end
of the spectrum for eye size. Most of his family
members have wider eyes than he does. When he
smiles, they become slits, almost to the point that
people need to ask him if he is awake when he stands
around and makes no movement. Even being wide
awake does nothing; no matter how much he tries,
he cannot find a way to make them at least appear
“normal”. His only consolation is how close his family’s
eyes are like his. He still cannot escape the constant
teases from his friends about his eyes, though.
His skin is reasonably pale for someone who works
outdoors a lot. That is not to say he has fair skin; in
fact, his skin is tanner than the typical light colour he
was born with. With yellow undertones, his skin
appears golden but only in bright lighting. Under dark
lighting, his tan is much more evident. He has no
problem with his tan, believing that it proves all of
the hard work he has done over the years. Along with
the tan, his hair hides the various pimples spotted
across his forehead. It’s probably one of few parts
he is very conscious about, mainly because they annoy
him just by being there. When he sees his sisters’
skin, he can’t help but feel envious, even if he is just
a boy. Just a characteristic that ticks him off.
The nose appears rather broad in comparison to his
face, something that should be fine if it weren’t the
fact that most of his family seems to have a narrower
nose than him. Not something that he puts against
him, but it is something he wonders about. The tip of
his nose appears okay, but as the nose progresses
to the bridge, the proportions seem off, with the bridge
appearing wider than it should be. His nose also has
a slightly bent look to it, no doubt from a fight he had
with one of his friends when he was younger. As it
never healed correctly since Storm figured there was
no point, it would always appear not centered.
His lips typically remain close together, the smile
always limited to the formation of the two. He rarely
shows his teeth, not out of shame but habit. But his
smile is always wide so there is no doubt that Storm
is a sociable guy. When he does choose to show
some of his teeth, even then he chooses not to have a
toothy grin. To him, toothy grins are reserved for
looking ridiculous. If he needs to smile, laugh, and joke
around, he doesn’t need to have an absurd grin to succeed.
He wishes he has dimples, though, thinking that they
actually look really cute and are more expressive. However,
some part in his genetic code decided that he could do
without it so he is left to envy those who have them.
After the accident, Storm has realised that his ribs
continue to affect him. Most of the time he can wave
it off easily, but there are times when he has to clutch
them to “squeeze” the pain. The ribs were
bandaged correctly, but Storm is still convinced that
they have not healed properly, causing a great debate
on whether the pain is mental or physical. Either way,
he still feels a tight feeling near the site of his injury,
sometimes hindering his ability to work. He has
learned to fight against it, but there is only a limit
he can take before he needs a break.
Despite how ridiculous it might look, Storm prefers
his hair to be long. Not long to the point that he
could tie up a decent ponytail, but he hates it when
he cannot see the strands of his hair. His parents hate
the look, thinking that it only makes him look like a
lazy idiot but he complains back that he cannot focus
if it’s styled any other way. Of course, he neglects
the fact that his hair was frequently cropped when
he was a young child, but his hair’s history is not as
important as to how it is styled now. In a way, you
could say it’s his attempt to be “cool”. No matter what
happens though, it shall always remain its natural
colour; he has seen more than enough odd colours on
the television when the Games occur than he would
like. Not that anyone is trying to force him but he is
extremely adamant on his hair being left alone.
His father likes to call it strong, his friends claim it’s
flat, and he’s convinced that it’s normal. Normal meaning
that it’s just like the rest of his family. In a way, it
is similar to the family’s, although his has a more
masculine look to it. Even if it is structured and “strong”,
he cannot deny the fact that he has the family’s
natural “roundness”, perhaps where his friends got
the idea that his face is flat. He does admit that his
cheekbones are not as prominent as they could be,
that the lines of his face appear more curved than
they do linear. It’s not something that really bothers
him, but with many friends who have the lined facial
structure, it does become a bit annoying if they
keep pestering him about it.
Due to the nature of his work, Storm dresses as
simply as he can. After all, everything’s going to end
up being dirty anyway. Even if he didn’t have to
worry about getting his clothes dirty, there are only
so many things he can afford so simple to him is
always the best. Simple in his mind is a soft t-shirt
and some type of pants that does not look like it’s
on the verge of tearing. To complete the look, he
always has his bracelet of wooden beads. He is never
without it and if he ever finds himself losing it, he
typically goes into a panic moment where he trashes
the area around him until it is found…and then he’s
stuck with cleaning up the mess. It was given to
him by his father, so he considers it to be very
important, one of the early gestures of love. For every
year, a bead is added to the original 7 beads to
symbolise his growth. Because his wrist could not
grow fast enough, Storm wraps the bracelet
around his wrist twice in order to ensure that it would
remain there.
The oldest child in his family, Storm holds his manner
as the eldest as he should: strong with a chin up high.
Yet he is the one who relaxes the most in the family.
Despite familial pressures and expectations to do well,
he is often the one who gets away with everything.
His favourite thing to do is tease his younger siblings.
He also has a protective nature over them. As the
only and oldest son, he knows it is his obligation to
make sure that his sisters are safe and doing well at
the same time. Because of this, he frequently checks
in with them whether they know it or not. He doesn’t
like to be expressive about this side of him since he
feels like it would make him look weak or at least
caring. Not that he doesn’t but expressive emotions
isn’t a part of him and thus he only shows affection for
his sisters through continuous teasing, not really caring
to what limits the teasing goes. As far as he knows, it’s
all out of the “goodness in his heart.”
At times, he resents being the only boy, though. There
is a certain air to being the sole child with a Y chromosome
instead of two X’s. As a child, he watched as daughter
after daughter was born, constantly wishing the next
one would be a son. When no boy joined the family, he
knew that it was going to be just him, and he learned
to be a man and deal with it. He cannot suppress the
feeling of regret every once in a while, keeping himself as
closed off as possible until his thoughts have passed.
When he was younger, he found himself in control most
of the time, thanks to the trust his parents would give
him and their dependency on his being able to handle
the family and farm work. As his parents were often
preoccupied with their own work, he and his little sister,
Sundra, were given the responsibility of taking care of
the two younger siblings. Sundra was always the quiet
one so Storm was allowed to take control of the situation,
something that became a part of him. His immediate
response to all arguments is he’s the older one and therefore
he knows what he is doing. That method used to work
until Sundra started having a voice for herself, causing
Storm to be pushed back. It is much more difficult for
Storm to get his way, allowing the two older siblings to
quibble over any decision.
Storm is closest to his second youngest sibling, Europa. He
considers Europa as his “little sidekick”, both of them teasing
Sundra in order to challenge her. He loves how oblivious
she is at times and even finds it endearing when it doesn’t
get in the way. It also helps that she seems to have a
preference for him as well. If Storm had to analyse it, he
would guess that it has to do with the fact that they are
the first and third children of the family, thus why they are
so close, but Storm doesn’t think too much into it. He’s just
happy with the fact that he has a sister who seems to
agree with him.
Even if Io is the baby of the family, Storm can’t help but
sometimes feel frustrated with her. He believes that she
has reached the age where she wants to help out with
everything, but only gets in the way and wastes everyone’s
time. The mixed feelings could be compared to having to
raise a baby: they’re cute when they’re just sitting there,
but after some time, they get to be really annoying. He
doesn’t spare any hugs when it comes to Io, though, making
sure to treat her just as he should. It is because of this
“barging in at the wrong time” nature that prevents Io from
becoming the next favourite sister.
His relationship with his parents could be described as
tumultuous at best. He knows that there has to be some
love there, but they are too busy to show it. As a young
child, it became a dream whenever his parents asked him
if he could help, but as he grew it up, he realised that they
were trying to condition him so he can learn how to run
the place. At times, he resents his parents for the expectations
they have on him, but in an odd way, he still loves them.
He’s not fond of showing that either. So he learns to be the
obedient son and make them proud by doing the best job
he can. After what happened when he tried to slack off, he
knows better than to mess with them.
Storm is the type of boy who will only hang out with positive
people. Why? Because he likes a positive environment.
He’s the boy who enjoys having a good time with his friends,
and he feels that those who are negative would only drag
Storm down as well. That being said, most of his friends
are similar in personality: ready to laugh and not afraid
to crack jokes at each other. Most of his friends aren’t too
fond of the fact that he needs to work constantly, but
there is a handful of guys who are willing to accept it. For
the rest of them, Storm can only survive against their
constant complaints about how he doesn’t spend enough
time with them and their threats on how if he does not
provide time for his friends, then they are going to ditch them
which are actually bluffs but Storm doesn’t acknowledge
them anyway.
With the exception of that one period when he decided to
slack off in school, Storm is normally studious. He aims
for good grades in school, and he pays attention when his
parents are telling him what to do. His friends like to tease
him by saying he needs to relax more often, but he brushes
them off with his own teasing, saying that one day he
will be the one who is going to make fun of them because
he’s so successful. That usually shuts them up, but it
causes Storm to think about how much effort he has put
into studying, only to shrug off the thought when he realises
that it really is worth it in the end. Plus, it means more time
to spend with his family, especially his sisters.
In a lower middle, working class family, it would be
impossible to believe that Storm Maximilian Wie
was born in a nice, grand hospital with doctors
working around his mother as best they could...and
it was impossible. In fact, Storm’s birth was not
well-pampered as his parents believed their eldest
son’s birth should have been. It was a grueling
process with hours of labour and pain. It took Storm’s
mother a few weeks to finally appreciate the baby
that had been born, him being a boy was a big asset
to her getting over the labour period.
Even if his parents were happy that they had a son
in their family, Storm’s parents were often working,
only teaching him whatever was necessary to survive
at his young age. As a child, he never understood
why his parents would not stay with him, but it did
not matter since his comprehension levels were so
low. Some resentment might have started accumulating
at that time, leading to the root of his disguised
animosity towards his parents.
It was common sense that his parents would want
more children in the family; the more they had, the
more hand they could have on the field. They agreed
that Storm would be a great asset to their work, but
they wanted another child to help them out. They
weren’t particularly too picky about the gender of
the next child, thinking that that child would benefit
them in some way. So when Sundra was born, they
were ecstatic about the new addition. Storm was too
young to understand what had happened, and it
wasn’t until later that he recognised that there really
was a difference between the two.
Because his parents needed all the help they could
get, Storm was put to work extremely early. At first
it was simple tasks, collecting products from tame
animals. Then he moved on to those that took a little
more skill and practice, acquiring the skills through
the rushed tutorials from his father and self-instruction.
As the son, he was expected to do the more physical
work, especially when it came to the crops. He also
tended to the horses, but as Sundra was much more
fond of horses than he was, he left them to her.
Storm was still educated on the workings of the farm,
the expectation being one day he would own the place.
If anything, Storm was always fond of working in
the farm, even if the hours and work were grueling.
As a young and innocent child, he saw it as a way
to be with his parents although there was still some
distance. Because his parents wanted him to be
ready to run the place himself, they spent a good
amount of quality time with him, being the most
parental Storm had seen from them for an extremely
long time. One lesson he remembers in a good light
was how to lead the horses to the trough. He always
thought it required a bunch of tugging, but his father
was kind and patient as he helped Storm coax
the horses. While Storm knew that his father was
a kind man, it was the very first time that Storm knew
that his father still loved him despite the preoccupations.
After the birth of Sundra, Storm’s parents really
wanted to have another boy in the family. In their
minds, the more boys there were, the better they
could run through the work and get the job finished.
So they kept trying. After about three years, a
baby girl was born. Although they were a bit
disappointed by the fact that their newborn was not
a boy, they accepted her all the same and named her
Europa. Then they were sure that their next child
would be a boy, because it would make the perfect
balance. Unfortunately, nothing was ever perfect,
and they had another girl five years after Europa.
This girl they named Io and although she was no
boy, her parents doted on her like she was the
precious gem in the family.
With two other little sisters to take care of, Storm’s
list of things to do grew. He was told by his parents
that he was going to have to watch over them and
make sure they didn’t run all over the place. He felt
that they had become his kids as they were directly
placed in his care, so he would make sure that they
received whatever was best for them. He ran the
improvised daycare center with Sundra, but as his
voice was louder than hers metaphorically and literally,
he managed to have his way most of the time.
When he was in his early teens, he decided to do
something extremely reckless. Of course it was not
his fault that it had happened; it just did. He had
been working with the horses when he dropped
the bracelet of wooden beads he always wore.
As he reached down to pick it up, the horse in front
of him decided to kick him with his hind legs,
breaking several ribs and incapacitating Storm for a
few days. His parents kept berating him, telling him
how clumsy he was for not noticing that the horse
was right there. His bracelet was retrieved
and after that incident, he made sure it was tight
around his wrist. The only lasting damage was the
constant pains he would feel in his ribs.
Ever since he was a young child, Storm noticed that
his parents would pay more attention to him,
instruct him on the workings of the farm. At first, he
believed that it was because they loved him more
than his sister(s). Then he learned that the nature
of their lectures was out of expectation, not love.
He paid more attention to the focus his parents
were giving him, and he realised that while they
might love him in some way, their expectations were
exceedingly high because he was the oldest son
in the family. Not even the oldest; he was the
only son in the family. He felt that it was a burden
being placed on him, but he continued to listen to
them and do his work responsibly because that
was what they wanted.
Like any good child, Storm went to school obediently,
paid attention in his classes, and earned good
grades. It helped that he was learning a good amount
of the same information at home, but he would put
in a good effort nonetheless. He also had a good
amount of friends at school, people he could socialise
with but nothing more than that. Due to limitations
of work, most of his friends wondered why he could
never hang out with them in the town. Some of
his friends understood, giving him the benefit of
the doubt, but the ones who did not have to work
as many hours as Storm did expected him to at
least provide a few hours to them which he would
try but fail.
As Storm proceeded on to his last year of school,
he realised that he was going to have to work
full-time, a not so delightful thought. He knew that
it was expected from him, though, so he decided
to make the most of his last year at school. Granted,
he was still afraid to flunk all of his courses, but he
thought it would be a bit of fun to play around with
his parents, allowing his grades to slip enough to
grab his parents’ attention. And grab their
attention it did. It was so bad, Storm had bruises for
at least a week. That plus the extra hours of work
on the weekends managed to convince Storm to not
fool around again. So he continued to work to help
out his family and he no longer questioned everything
they were doing.
