Runner (My poem for a contest)

Runner:

Everything...
Everything froze in that one moment..
I wasn't ready to die
I couldn't not just yet
Those who had set their eyes on the prize
Didn't realize it all wasn't meant to be
Nobody needed to die for some peace or tranquility
Still I stood frozen
I hesitated...
I wanted to survive
I swear my heart even skipped a beat
There was a loud bang
That rang in my ears
In an instant I realized I ran!
My feet pounding out of sync with my heart
It was then I grapped for the gun
It was then that I pulled the trigger
To my own life
I didn't want to play..
I didn't want to play this childish game
