Jace

Jace woke up. Sunlight shone through the small window over his bed. He sat up and stretched. He yawned, waking up his 6 year old brother Darrin. Darrin sat up and rubbed his eyes. He said, "I'm hungry. Really, really, hungry." Jace sighed and said, "I know. I'll go get some food right now. You just stay here and wait." Darrin nodded understandingly. He was smart for his age. Jace walked to the other tiny bedroom in the house. In that bedroom was Keegan, his 19 year old older brother and his three other little siblings, Spencer who was 9, Greg who was 12, and Damien who was 14. Damien was already up. He was sitting on his blanket on the warm wooden floor. Jace tapped Damien's shoulder. Damien turned and looked at him. "I'm leaving you in charge while I go by food. Take care of everyone, alright?" Damien nodded. The fair thing would have been for Jace to ask Keegan to take care of the family while he was gone. "No," He thought. "The fair thing would be for Keegan to go get food and to ask me to watch the kids while he was gone." But of course Keegan was not fit to take care of the kids. He was too lazy and usually to drunk to take care of the kids so Jace was forced to take on the responsibilities of the oldest sibling. The only reason he hadn't tried to kick Keegan out of the house was because without him the Capitol would put them all in orphanages. But in 4 years when Jace turned 19 Keegan would be out of the house. He didn't do anything to help out and he was just an extra mouth to feed. He walked to the door. He put on one of the thin sweatshirts 'cause even though it was still chilly out the sun was bright and it was one of the warmer spring days. He took a little money from a container with some money in it. He bit his bottom lip worriedly. The jar was nearly empty. He thought, "I really need a job." He walked out of the door and started to the market place. When he got there he bought a small but relatively plump rabbit. He only had a little more money so he bought two carrots and 3/4 of a loaf of bread. He was walking back when he heard a young women calling frantically that their child's ankle was twisted. He walked up to her and said, "I can help."
"Oh thank you!" She replied. She gave him quite a bit of money.
Jace smiled. He went up to the child and set her ankle with a piece of cloth. "Rest her ankle and don't make her walk on it or the bone with get messed up and it might not heal right."
The woman smiled thankfully and said, "Oh thank you, thank you!"
He nodded and walked home. He went inside and put the money in the container and smiled, satisfied at the sound of the money clinking against the other money in the container. He went to a counter and sliced two thin pieces of bread. He went in the room Damien was in. By then Greg and Spencer were also awake. Jace split the bread into thirds and gave one piece to each of them. He went in his room and saw that Nate had woken up. He split the second piece of bread into thirds and gave one piece to Darrin, one piece to Nate, and took the last piece for himself. Darrin smiled at him as did Nate and they scarfed down the bread. He sat on his bed and ate his piece, feeling satisfied.
