Lucillia Fletcher
Books lie. Rain doesn't sound like the dainty, drip, drop. More like a broken drum. Like running feet. Like some exotic dance, that only you can hear.
This sound played on my window, making it vibrate in it's frame. It was this sound that I heard, when I found out I was pregnant.
I had been in the shower, too depressed to sit at the dining room table and talk with Aunt Rena. What would we talk about, now that Alkin was gone? Who would tell the punchline of the jokes, when you weren't done with the opening? Who would give you a play-by on his day at school, as if it were a novel?
The sound of the rain mixed with the running water. It was a pleasant sound. It soothed my nerves, and drove some (but not all) of the bad thoughts away.
I rubbed my stomach, applying a third layer of body soap. My fingers met a bump. I had jerked my head down, my gaze transfixed on this new skin deformity.
My first thought was, What the hell? I hadn't hooked up with anyone since... since... Oh hell.
It had been a month ago since it had happened. Was that long enough to develope a bump? Was it possible this was all a mistake? I couldn't possibly be pregnant?!
But this was the only possible solution. Why else would my stomach be sticking out three inches from the rest of my skin.
I pulled on a plain-colored tee, and slid on my favorite pair of jeans. I stumbled into the living room, where Aunt Rena was sitting. I walked straight past her, ignoring her stuttered protests. I threw the front door opened, and continued on the sidewalk.
Past the lab. Past the bakery. Past the too-expensive candy store. Past the school. And... there.
The apothecary stood there, a mere two stories high. It wasn't like the Capitol's fancy, high-tech hospitals, but it would do. I strolled right through the open doors, right up to the secretary, staring at me above her wire-rimmed glasses.
"May I help you?"
I nodded, hesitantly. "I was raped almost two months ago. And now... now... I'm pregnant."
