If there was anything that Sadie Aldersley hated, it was Tuesdays. Tuesdays were cleaning days, the one day of the week that her aunt, Faye, would act worse than usual. She would tug Sadie out of bed - and literally tug, too. She'd grab Sadie by the hair and pull until the girl was on her feet. - at the exact instant that her mother and older brother, Elliot, would walk out of the house for their own jobs. From the moment her feet hit the floor, it was a stream of both physical and verbal abuse from Faye. This morning alone, she'd gotten slapped across the face - and leaving a very, very visible bruise forming in it's wake - for not doing the dishes fast enough, and had been shoved into a counter when Faye had tried to walk past.
"Oh, get out of here, you idiotic girl!" Faye had finally yelled at her when she'd tripped over the woman's stupid cat, Spots, and had dumped a armful of clean dishes on the floor. None of them had broken, and it technically wasn't her fault, but that didn't matter to Faye. She'd grabbed the girl by the hair and shoved her out the door, slamming it in the girl's face. Sadie wouldn't have minded much to be out of the house until she heard the loud click! that indicated that not only had she been kicked out of her own house, but locked out as well.
"Witch," The fifteen year old mumbled at the door, which offered no response. It didn't even make her feel better. It was no secret - not to Sadie's family, nor to the neighbors or even the people in District 6 who barely knew her or her family - that Faye blamed her for her father's disappearance and her mother's heartbreak over it. What Sadie didn't understand is what she had to do with it. She was only nine at the time, and one day she'd woken up to Peacemakers at her door, and then that was when Faye had swooped in and made her life a living hell. She got through it though, but only by lying to herself and saying that deep down, her aunt truly did love her.
Of course, she knew she was kidding herself. All of Faye's love was reserved for Ollie and her mother. She showered them in compliments and even made sure to make their meal portions larger, while Elliot and Sadie would go to bed with growling stomachs. They took the beatings, as long as it kept Ollie from getting hurt, but Sadie couldn't deny the sad way Elliot would look at her whenever she had a bruised cheek. Elliot tried to coach her into staying out of trouble, but it seemed like Sadie was an easy target for Faye's anger.
Sadie found herself in the heart of the district without really realizing where her feet were carrying her. Not that she really minded, she loved her District and couldn't think of a better way to be spending her time. It was cold, just barely Spring at this point and just the kind of weather that Ollie found enjoyable. Sadie supposed that she liked it to, just because it brought a smile to her younger brother's face.
As usual, Sadie was so caught up in her own thoughts that she barely noticed where she was going or what she was doing. It was as though her body was on autopilot, only Sadie didn't know how to turn it off. She barely remembered handing over the money for an apple, a rare treat that Sadie always saved up for. And she didn't remember finding a place to sit down. In fact, the first thing she really remembered was sinking her teeth into the juicy apple and letting the sweet flavor fill her mouth. It was only that that jolted her back to reality and made her survey the streets of District 6.
