Nano Idea '11

This is my NaNo idea for November. I had another idea, but I personally like this better. A lot of these characters were supposed to be for another story, but I never developed it, so I didn't write it. Here's the half-summary, half-whatever. Enjoy and tell me what you think!



Post-apocalypse, a Utopian city rises up, perfect and shut out from all. Everything about this city is perfect except for one thing: If you don't want your child for whatever reason, they can be sent away to the City of Steel to live there until they're 18. The same goes for kids expelled from school and criminals below 18. After that age, they can come back. The problem is, seldom do they live to 18.

Finn Algrun knows very few things: One is his name. Another is that if you're bad you go to the City of Steels. And lastly, he's been bad. All else, his family, his past, why he's being sent away, everything is gone, his memory wiped clean. When he arrives in the mostly destroyed City of Steel, the kids there fear him. Following a war among the kids in the beginning when the destroyed city was put to use, they've been divided into three groups: The Unwanted, the majority of the kids who are under the rule of a 19 year old girl they call "Mother," who, for the most part controls the city and is the only one to stay in the city past 18 years old; there are the Shadow Children, a group of kids who went underground, literally, and keep to themselves, and finally, The Sharp Daggers, once six kids who wreck havoc and kill with daggers, mercilessly, often preying on those about to turn 18. Though there are few of them, everyone lives in fear of the Sharp Daggers, fearing they may be next on their kill list.

When Finn arrives, despite the wishes of the other Unwanted, especially Wren, a mischievous girl, who is loyal to Mother, Mother takes Finn in and explains to him the awful truth: He was a Sharp Dagger and tried to leave the city just weeks ago. As part of the Daggers, he's performed atrocious acts upon the Unwanted and Shadow Children, killing and torturing many. But, Finn can't remember any of it! To make matters worse, when Finn, scared and confused, refuses to rejoin the Sharp Daggers, they give an awful ultimatum to the Unwanted and Mother: Hand over Finn, as well as the city in one month, or another war will take place.

Suddenly, Finn is thrust into a month of hell as he struggles to regain his memory, battles with the guilt of the awful deeds he's performed and tries to do the impossible: Stop the Sharp Daggers from killing them all.



Yeah, so basically, the story is told in the one month, and told from the eyes of Finn, as well as the various kids in the City of Steel. I'm excited for this one.
