Edana Lightwood ~ District 1

Edana Lightwood, the adorable girl with the perfect face. Full Cheeks and a pointed chin, she’s beautiful. Hair that runs across her head in waves of Blonde, she’s beautiful. Large Green Eyes, which you would have thought were cat eyes, she’s beautiful. She is absolutely beautiful. She knows she’s beautiful, but she’s not boastful. She smiles a reassuring smile, but that only leads the attention to her lips. Her lips, those full lips, no wonder other girls are jealous.

But, it’s not just her face. Come on, she’s from District 1. She has to take care of herself, and she does. Skin the color of sand, and legs that seem to go on for miles, she seems perfect. But, one thing that isn’t perfect about her? It’s her prosthetic leg. She wears a flesh colored mesh over the metal so no one can tell the difference. It works, well mostly, the skin tone is similar, but it's a few shades darker than her skin. Her mother isn't giving in to getting her a new one, so no mini skirts for Edana. After years of practice, 16 year old Edana has everyone in District 1, believing she’s perfect. She wants to be perfect. Her smooth stomach isn’t good enough, her piercing eyes aren’t good enough, and she wants everything to be perfect. Why did she have to enter the world as a freak, a one legged freak?

Edana, this all around “Good Girl” with a mean streak, and she wishes it wasn’t like that. Insecurities, that’s what she puts it off to, because she knows that the stress of hiding her “secret” gets to her. She'll lie about her leg, no matter how ridiculous it sounds, and she'll insist until you learn to not even mention the leg. She knows that with a right leg, she’d be a good girl without a mean streak. The leg, it’s the bane of her existence. She suffers from extreme anxiety, and can suffer multiple attacks on a single day.

For her friends and family, she’s different. She doesn’t have to be perfect, and she shouldn’t try to be. Her friends know about her leg, and they only know her as the funny, sweet, and strong girl that they love. It’s important for her that there’s a place she doesn’t have to hide behind her mesh. Edana loves to laugh, and it’s one of the most annoying qualities about her. A mix between a Hyena and a Cuckoo Clock, it’s not exactly endearing.

As I mentioned earlier, Edana has a bit of a mean streak. All in all, Edana is a fighter, and being from a career district only cemented her classification as a bitch. Cross her, you’re dead. Love her, she’s sweet as sugar. Edana is loyal, and it often gets her into trouble. When you’re willing to do anything for a friend, let's face it, Edana , it’s going to make you a few enemies. Alright, she’s made more than a few enemies. But, the leg did this too, and it can be good or bad.

So, all in all, Edana is a nice girl, a bitch, and a fighter. Multiple personalities, much?

On the eve of the thirtyfourth Reaping Day two seventeen year olds, Willow Riley and Casper Lightwood, met in a pub near the market. Both of them came with separate friends to celebrate, on the off chance they’d never meet again. They kept each other company, wished each other luck, and left. The next day, they met early in the morning, and continued the conversation. Willow fell for Casper, and both of their plans were thwarted. With that, the two began to meet more often, and after three years, Willow was pregnant.

Nine months later, Edana Isabelle Lightwood came into the world, one appendage missing. Willow and Casper never married, though. Casper fell ill several months after the birth of his daughter. The Doctors the Lightwood’s had sent did all they could, but trackerjacker venom wasn’t exactly treatable even with their educations. Casper died in his sleep, and Willow’s world came crashing down. Sure, Willow was wealthier than even most of the District, but raising a child was different. Being a single mom made things complicated, but she soon met another man. Willow met Xavier Lightwood, Casper’s brother. Xavier and Willow had met at the factory where Casper had met, which was coincidentally very close to the fence, leading Casper to his untimely demise.. Xavier became the only father Edana ever knew, and it gave Willow a sense of security. Were they in love? Xavier was in love with Willow, Willow never got quite over Casper.

Edana grew, and Edana started to walk. So did her insecurities. Xavier, who loved her mother so much that he was jealous of his step-daughter. This meant that Edana was never safe in her own home, and it was worse than being raised with a single parent. Beatings were frequent for Edana, and it went on for years. But soon enough, Xavier met the same end as his brother. Funny, you’d think District 1 would learn to avoid the fences.

Free from the year of abuse, Edana began to live a normal life. Edana never told her mother about Xavier, and it made everything simple. She made friends, and she was happy. She was as happy as she could be. The leg was still hard to overcome, and she always wished that the mesh was enough. She battled the depression as an amputee, and she wished that she could tell the truth. Telling the truth makes her weak, and she could never be weak.
