Name: Velvet Marquis
Age: 17
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 2
Appearance:
Velvet has long brown hair that reaches to her middle back and is often strangely and usually isn’t brushed. Her face usually has a dreamy-like quality to it, giving the impression that she may not fully be listening when she is. When natural, Velvet's hair is a light curly brown and can be styled in many different ways, but she usually lets it down because she sees it as a hassle to put it up every single day.
Her skin tone is usually tan for the time that she spends outdoors. Light freckles are splattered across her cheekbones, nose, shoulders and back, but no where else. She has one freckle on the inside of her left ring finger while her sister has a freckled on the inside of her right index finger. Velvet’s eyes, in indoor light, are a clear blue but most people mistake them for being grey. She usually gets some different colored contacts to wear in school, although her parents dislike them, but other than that, Velvet is quite content with her appearance. She has an average slender build, but is tall with long legs. She has a large bust for her age and her eyes are small, often giving her the appearance of someone four years older than she actually is. Velvet also has white teeth that were straightened in her younger years but her canines are sharper and a little bit longer than her other teeth, giving the appearance that she has fangs, when she doesn’t.
Personality:
Velvet usually spends her time outside, contributing to her tan skin complex, and watches people. This was caused by a habit to never let her guard drop. But during the summer, Velvet would sit on a bench or at the outside of a restaurant and just watch people, analyzing them from head to toe. She would also make notes of them and also try to psychoanalyze them at the same time as well as make small sketches of them with her drawing ability. Even when she meets new people, Velvet would analyze them like she was trained to do. But she would often put on a mask that would cover up what she really was doing; often giving an impression that she wasn’t that smart. After awhile of meeting the person, she would decide if they were to be trusted or if they could be used to her advantage. Rarely would Velvet consider someone to be a friend. But she would also use this unique ability to hand pick the people she would consider to be trusting- which was a big honor.
To be one of Velvet’s friends, they had to be close in intelligence or in abilities. Now she surrounds herself with four girls that are all in one or more ways, artistic like her. One is a dancer, the other is a writer, one is an artist like herself and the other one likes to bake. Not only did she consider these girls her friends, but she put a great deal of trust into them- which was a hard thing to do for her. But being one of Velvet’s friends was anything but easy. They would often have to put up with her stubbornness and occasional attitude. One of her friends could easily pick at her until she exploded like a volcano, which was something that came with being her friend because Velvet would let down so many walls in order to have a close relationship with them.
Along with her annoyance to being picked apart, criticized or mocked, Velvet also held little tolerance for anyone that did not use their common sense. She also tended to lean away from people who had big personalities, who were loud and often high energized compared to Velvet who liked things calm and quiet. She considers school and everyone in the world as a challenge because she finds quite a few groups that she dislikes, but she knows that she simply cannot block them from her mind. And so Velvet learns to deal with them. But when Velvet is calm, she can carry on a nice conversation with anyone as long as they are respectable and quiet.
History:
Velvet and her older sister, Opal, are adopted, but from different families. But their appearances are similar, except that Opal is much more petite than Velvet and just has black hair and olive skin. Velvet lives with her sister and adoptive parents in the upper middle class area of District 2. Because of her wary nature, Velvet considered it quite a challenge to make friends and usually stuck around her older sister, but when her sister graduated, Velvet found herself forcing herself to get up and talk to people. After awhile, it wasn't hard to find a good group of friends that enjoyed her company and her talents.
Velvet’s father works as a manager to the quarry industry. He mainly meets with clients or does some number crunching to figure out costs and quantity. For Velvet’s younger years, her mother stayed at home to watch over them, but now works as a secretary for the Peace Keeper Recruitment Center. Opal, who is now out of school, is working under a Peace Keeper Unit outside of District 2, but she comes home every so often to visit her family. Velvet is not quite sure on what she wants to do later in life, but she has always watched the Hunger Games in fascination like it is calling to her. Every time she would watch the Games, Velvet would take down notes on survival and also what some of the tributes did wrong that got themselves killed.
Even in Velvet's dreams, she would often imagine herself as a tribute. A lot of cases Velvet would die in her dreams, but each time she woke up, she would jot down all of the things she did wrong and sought to correct them in the next dream. All of these perfectionist ideas that Velvet has gives her to confidence to be able to live her life independently. Velvet has also considered of being a stylist for the Hunger Games if she is not reaped, but either way, she wants to be part of the Games- one way or another.
