Fire is a harsh quality to the world.

And when two bad things mix, it only gets worse. Fire, along with a dithyrambic girl such as Seepie, was almost certain to have negative outcomes. There was a reason that she strayed away from anything that had to do with fire, even if the factories in District 3 were practically fueled by flame. One thing was certain: the brown haired girl did not like fire.

As she walked down a path, a certain cobblestone one, the smog disrupted her vision and the burn marks on her cheeks and fingertips stung. Her first instinct was to rush to her Grandmothers, and seeing as she acted on instincts in situations such as the one that had just happened, she had stormed out of her house without securing anything. Everything was left in the open.

Consciously, she didn't want anyone to see her, and so she tried to take alleyways, mainly, but still, she couldn't help the occasional pedestrian that was wrapped up in a scarf or something of the sort.

Let's face it, she was screwed.

There was something appealing about the cold. Dy spent so much time in the factory, trapped with stuffy air and machines that generated an ungodly amount of heat when broken (which was, unfortunately, often), that the feeling of winter air was invigorating. The cold made him feel clean- pure, really- and while the unfamiliarity of it made him shiver nervously, it was one thing that he liked despite not having much experience with it.

Today he was bundled up in a coat and scarf, carrying his sketch pad through the streets of downtown Three. The few people out were hard to capture; most were moving quickly, ducking into warmth wherever they could. While a decent enough artist, Dy had trouble taking down anything without time to watch it, and the day had been disappointingly unfruitful. Not that he was unhappy- the weather was lovely and a day off work was always relaxing- but still, a picture or three would be nice.

After an hour or so of rambling, he found the perfect subject: a young girl, seven or eight, was whistling while sweeping a small shop's cobblestones. Not bothering to ask permission (people changed when they knew there was someone watching them, recording them), he leaned against a wall across the street and began drawing. Slowly the child took shape in broad but careful strokes.

Suddenly a gust of wind blew through. Dy shivered in the unexpected sharpness, but his primary focus was the piece of paper, which had torn off of his drawing pad and down the street. With a panicked shout he ran after it, almost tripping on his trousers. It hit a person squarely in the face and, held by the wind, stuck. With difficulty- hard breathing was difficult, under the binding around his chest- he called, "So sorry!"

Inconveniently, a white piece of paper slammed hard into her face. She'd taken it as a surprise at first, not feeling the pain it would create soon as the wounds on her face were touched. Instinctively [again, acting on instinct], her hands were ripped out of her coat pockets and were latched around the paper on her face. "So sorry!" a voice had said as the one hand fumbled as another gust of wind blew and ripped the paper. The rip was not that major, possibly only halfway down, but Seepie, despite the pain, did not like what she'd done, even if it was accidental or not.

She knew how it felt for something like that to happen. To have formulas written down to be burned and never seen again, to have blueprints of inventions lost in the wind just like the paper that had been blowing had. No, the girl that had said she was sorry shouldn't have felt sorry. No. Seepie should be the sorry one, and she was, but her shock and pain on her face kept her from speaking up.

"It's fine.," she said, as if the rip she'd made was not significant at all.

The drawing was probably ruined; the rip was small enough, but managed to cut right through the sweeper's broom. Still, his only response was "Yep, definitely alright." Truly, it was. Drawing or no drawing, he was talking to someone, and that made life utterly fabulous. Even if he didn't know her, and only had a vague sense of what her face looked like because most of the time he'd been looking at it there had been paper over it.

Carefully Dy brushed short, wavy bangs out of his eyes so as to see better. The girl looked pained, as though she'd done something. "Sorry about getting in your way," he said hurriedly, trying to make her feel better. "I didn't mean to interrupt anything." Talking to people wasn't a common pastime for Dy, and he wasn't really sure where to go with it; he was pretty sure he was doing okay, but it was hard to say. His gaze fluttered down to the paper in the girl's hands, mostly to avoid the awkwardness of prolonged eye contact.

Somehow his gaze ended up more on the hands than the paper this time, and the words he'd been trying to form froze in his throat. Quickly but gently he pulled his own left hand out from the pocket and held it out, near but not quite next to the girl's. His hands made him nervous usually- the long fingers were distinctly feminine even after years of being ruined, and even while female Dy was too self-conscious to display his scars often. This was different, though- not an admission, but a comparison, for the girl's hands were as burned and cracked as his. "Factories?" Dy whispered, almost reverent- but quite terrified- at the idea of a connection between himself and a stranger.

No! It was not "all right." No matter how much the female that stood before Seepie spoke, she would never not-feel guilty for ripping the paper. But, perhaps, it wasn't that bad. It, truly, if anything, let Seepie feel a tad bit better, since the girl began to continue on, as if nothing had happened.

"Sorry about getting in your way, I didn't mean to interrupt anything," she said. Yes, the girl was interrupting something, which was Seepie's trip to her grandmothers, but Seepie was a nice girl, and wouldn't say anything like, "Oh, yes. You're interrupting something. Can you leave now?" It just wasn't her.

"No, you're not interrupting anything. I just was heading over to my grandmother's, she had something to give me. She's patient though, she can wait a bit," Seepie started in. "Heck, a conversation wouldn't even be that bad right now." But a conversation would be bad at that moment, but Seepie didn't talk to people much, and when she did, she usually enjoyed in thoroughly, so perhaps a conversation would make her face pain go away.

The girl pulled out her hand and moved it closer to Seepie's. While Seepie looked down, the comparison between the two was so very similar that she couldn't distinguish who's was who at the first. "Factories?" she had asked. No, it had just happened, not even an hour ago.

"No, actually. This happened quite recently, within the hour, probably. A household burner was turned on too high and my hands were victimized.," she said. "And what about yours?"

The girl seemed to be cheering up a bit about the paper, which lifted Dy's confidence (such that it was) considerably. Perhaps he wasn't bungling it, after all!

Except that she had to go, which kind of crashed the conversation. The stranger was pretty insistent that Dy wasn't in the way, but he didn't believe that at all. It had been a long time since Dy had a family, but he knew all too well the importance of spending time with them while you had the time to spend, he didn't want to get in the way of that. Flailing his hands a little (and totally forgetting he still hadn't taken back the drawing), the older of the two backed up. "Oh, no! I don't want to make her wait. Or you." He fiddled with his scarf, drawing it a little tighter around his neck in preparation to take off.

But then the hands thing happened, and that totally knocked all other thoughts out of his mind, because it was unusual in an exhilarating and horrifying way. Only it wasn't, really, because there was no connection between the two; it was only a slightly odd coincidence. "Ah," he murmured, disappointed and relieved all at once. On the one hand, it would have been nice to stumble across someone he had something in common with- but... that wasn't normal for him. "Sorry to hear that. It looks like it hurts." Not that his didn't hurt, of course, but he was used to it. These were not, after all, new wounds. "Mine... Too much time in the factories. Little pieces, hot machines, sharp plastic. This has been happening a long time." Abruptly insecure again, he tucked his hands away into the pockets of the faded blue jacket. "But they still work."

She was intrigued, to say the least. The guilt of ripping the paper still was in the back of her mind, but the girl that stood before Seepie Dilox didn't seem the least bit affected. "Oh, no! I don't want to make her wait. Or you," the girl had said on regards to Seepie's trip to her grandmother's home. It was alright, really, because grandmother of Seepie had not even a clue that she was coming over, and in the rare case that she was out of the house and doing something, there'd be no way that Seepie could find any ointments or burn cream to help the sting. "Oh! Don't worry at all. She doesn't even know that I'm heading over to her house, so there's really no need for me to rush."

In terms of the burns on both of their hands, Seepie's view of them made the pain, the burn, itch at her even more. Carefully, she hid her trembling lip by acting as if she were wiping something off of her face with her shoulder, dragging her head from the back of the shoulder to the front. Factories had caused the girl's burns, but a simple household burner had caused Seepie's. Years had caused that girl's, but one single moment had caused Seepie's. Were Seepie's burns really that bad? So bad that it made someone with years of being burnt have similar hands to something that had only lasted for a second or two?
"Yeah. It stings, but no pain, no gain?" she asked. "Good thing they still work. Do you know how hard life would be without hands?

If they were to converse, she might as well get the name of the girl she'd be speaking to. "Might as well get your name.," she insisted.

Still concise. I do hope that's okay? By all means, you don't have to continue the short posts if you'd rather do a long one, but this is long overdue and I wanted to get something out here, y'know?))

"Oh, no!" Dy's words skittered over each other a bit before he dragged them under control again. "I can't let you have her waiting. Here, I'll- I'll walk with you." It occurred to him that the really polite thing to do would be to take his leave, but he couldn't quite steel himself for it. So rare were his conversations outside of work that he couldn't bear to force one's ending. More to the point, since other people generally broke off the discourse, he didn't know how to initiate his own farewells. All the possible ways it could go wrong terrified him; just walking along, talking amiably until the girl created an out, would be infinitely more comfortable.

So rather than spinning a polite excuse or two and heading on his way, Dy allowed the conversation- such as it was- to stretch. Nodding sympathetically at her explanation, he asked, "Does it hurt?" Pain wracked his own burns and lacerations frequently, and though they were more recent and fewer in number, he couldn't imagine that the stranger's wounds were that different. Not that he shied away from the pain- but he had long since come to terms with the idea that some physical torment was acceptable as long as its acquisition led toward something worthwhile- but he had never truly grown used to it, and hearing about the girl's stove incident raised twinges of compassion in his own fingers.

They should probably be on their way, shouldn't they? The grandmother would be waiting. Dy made a leading gesture with the hand that wasn't near the stranger's. He'd forgotten about the ripped paper, which fluttered and crinkled unhappily as he moved it; embarrassed, he pulled his other hand back to run it through his hair and then tried again, with that one. "Your way?"
