Pax kissed May and Geena's foreheads before going out on his 3rd run of the day. A block away from home and his brain was racked. He used his runs to think things out, always just in case he did leave for the Arena at the next Reaping.
I have the stash under my bed of cash. I can find someone to walk them to and from school. They've been doing well, learning how to cook. But I can't leave them. I can't. Maybe someone will volunteer. This is a Career District. But no. I'd get my ass kicked if I said "no" to a chance to go into the Games. No, I have to go. And May and Geena will be OK if I do. But I'll win. I will.
Pax's eyes watered but he convinced himself it was just the wind whipping at his face as he ran. May and Geena, they were only 6, but Pax loved them more than anything and could never leave them. Their life wasn't hard, but it would be no walk in the park without him; that's why he had a stash of money for the girls, so they'd never have to take any tesserae.
Pax's run came to a halt as he tried to pull his emotions back together; he never let himself get this torn up while thinking about the Games.
Pax rounded the next to last corner, before returning home and tripped, face planting into the concrete of the street. He was shaken, but quickly realized there were no breaks in his bones and stood up. He touched his face and instantly his hand was red. "Shit." Pax murmured to himself. He ripped a piece of his shirt off and tied it around the gash at his temple. "Shit, shit, shit, shit! he repeated to himself under his breath as he walked the last block to his house.
