18 |: Female |: District 6
Appearance:
The quiet but gleeful girl can always be spotted with a smile, whether gentle or happy. However, her cheekbones are never accentuated no matter how big her smile gets, causing others to debate whether the smile on her face is genuine or not. As a young girl, she would complain how her flat cheekbones were annoying and did nothing for her, only to be met with her mother’s criticism that she should be proud of her looks and should not complain so much. Still, she would sit and keep trying to push her cheeks upward so it looked like she had some cheekbones.
Her eyes were always considered small by her peers but within her family, they were relatively rounder and more open than the rest of her family's. However, if she gives someone a big grin, her eyes shrink into the small slits that give her a narrow view of the world. The color of the irises are dark, nearly pools of black when the light shines on them. They sport a glossy look which bothers Shiori as she looks at all the pretty and light colors everyone else has. Faint eye brows arch over her round eyes, leaving a gray-ish color set on her pale skin.
Her straight hairs are slightly lighter than the color of her eyes. While they lighten a bit in the summer, Shiori’s brown hair maintains the same shade throughout the year. However, hidden and tucked in between clumps of brown are several strands of white and grey, signs that Shiori is growing older and…well, not much wiser. They bother her and the only reason she hasn’t pulled them out yet is an old saying her mother keeps using on her, something that makes Shiori wonder if her mother was from another district in Panem.
Standing at a full height of 5’, Shiori was often teased at school for being the shortest one, with her mother telling her that one day, she would be taller than them. So she grew up waiting for that growth spurt that would no longer make her the short one. However, as she cruised past puberty, it was evident that she would always remain short and that it was by miracle that she made it an inch taller than her mother. Because she hasn’t filled out her frame much, she simply looks tiny in general, causing her to try to appear bigger than she is by using whatever mechanisms given to her.
She is not exactly sure if it’s true but with the level of nosebleeds her family has been getting (especially her for some unknown reason), she is sure that the whole family has high blood pressure. Her mother has often tried to measure her blood pressure just to make sure that she is healthy, but she compares her bp to the whole family’s which, in Shiori’s mind, is a horrible reference point. However, her condition has never been considered life-threatening enough to cause any worry; there is just a lot of hassle when it comes to cleaning up the mess.
Personality:
She is seen as very shy and hidden behind whatever cover she throws in front of her. Although she does speak up more when around people she is familiar with, it has been ingrained into her mind that she should be quiet and docile when it comes to speaking with other people. Her mother constantly told her that as a child, she was to respect other, older people which meant no speaking out of turn or doing any action that could offend an elder. Therefore, Shiori keeps herself contained and restrained to prevent anything from going wrong. Of course, that puts her at odds with her rebellious side when she was going through her early teenage years.
However, honor is extremely important to her which was why she never crossed the line, even when she was going through her phase. Her sense of honor and respect earned her the name “goody two-shoes” while in school, which was not a good thing to be labeled with as everyone was busy exploring the world around there, albeit dangerously. So while her friends were out on “study breaks”, Shiori would be sitting at home and reading from her book, not wanting to disappoint her mother and father.
Admiration for the elders in her family was never limited while Shiori lived under the roof. Her parents were well-respected people and Shiori did not wish to shame them in front of their close friends and colleagues. Her older brother was often times a jerk as he was busy working on some new creation, but instead of complaining and whining, Shiori would just sit back and admire the intricate design.
Her secret love for certain pairings has been a well-kept secret. She uses the loose floorboard or the drawer filled with shirts to hide her writings that fantasize normally discouraged pairings. She has a particular fondness for male-male pairings which often causes nosebleeds when she least expects it, but only if the writing is good. Even if the writing is bad, though, she still treasures them. In that sense, her creativity has stretched to a different level, but it allows her to explore a world that would otherwise be restrained by her parents.
While at school, Shiori’s aim to get all good grades has caused her to devote more time to her schoolwork than she needs to. She has also picked up several other internships to supplement her studies, causing her social life to gradually decrease as she matures. She still provides herself an hour for her to relax and be social, but most often she could be found logging in extra hours even though she was already sent home an hour ago. When she does receive a commendation, her chest expands as she become extremely proud of what she has done, sharing it with anyone who cares.
History:
Shiori Kimura was born on a warm, spring day to Kenji Kimura and Nanami Ogawa. While they were rather proud of their young son, Hideki, they accepted the little baby as another gift to achieve some of the greatest accomplishments in District 6. From a very young age, Shiori was taught to not only be intelligent but to also look the part. Nanami coached her daughter everything she needed to know to be a presentable young lady of her status and to also become an educated woman like everyone in her family for generations.
So Shiori’s childhood was filled with sayings and extra homework that were meant to be beneficial to her in the long run. Only honor and her wish to make her mother and father proud kept her from going insane as she spent most of her nights inside, doing the same homework she had worked on earlier in the afternoon. Often her friends would complain that she was in the house too much, but she would simply giggle into her sleeves and say that they were silly, that it was necessary for her to keep working on her homework so she could keep “Mother” and “Father” happy.
When she was at a tender nine years, her brother’s interest for electronics was slowly rubbing off of her to the point that she would try to create her own models while she was in the house. When Hideki found out that she was “copying” him, he devised a robot that was created to irritate and bother Shiori on a constant basis. Not to be fazed and too prideful to accept her brother’s attempt to disrupt her, she created her own device that would automatically set off loud noises every five minutes and could hide in small spaces that her brother frequently overlooked. The two of them continued their battle to the point that their parents found out and Nanami forced the siblings to stop. The devices were collected and stored away somewhere secret. Still, it was not impossible to hear a random beep every now and then.
While Shiori watched her friends become more and more stuck inside books, she also watched them have fun as well with their boyfriends or other friends who were not pursuing a strenuous career. It was hard to say if she envied them or not as she had never had a chance to just let go, but during her early teenage years, she often wondered what would happen if she chose to sneak out of the house for one night or if she decided to skip dinner and study time so she could be with her friends just a little longer.
In her last year in school, her parents sat her down and gave her a list of expectations that they wanted to see before she graduated. One included holding a job for six months while she also had to log in 2 more hours of studying per week. When she approached her brother to tell him how stressed out she was, he gave her a quick hug and a lazy pat. To Shiori, it meant the world as it was the first time her brother ever showed any sign of compassion, though when she thought about it later, she knew it was only because he had gone through the same thing when he was in his last year, but all the same, she appreciated the comfort.
