Just another interrogation, thats what it seemed to Merlot. This was another chance for him to fail. He was a Peacekeeper, he was not supposed to fail, he was supposed to overcome anything that stood in his way, yet a little girl from District Eight was able to derail his mind. She made a fool out of him, but then she got reaped. He knew that the Capitol would make a fool out of her, he would relish when she died, it would take a great burden off of him. It would show that those who break the rules never come out on top, well, it probably would not. After all, weren't the people who trained for the games normally the ones who won? This thinking was too much for Merlot at the time, he had to worry about doing his job in this interrogation.
Picking up the folder on the table, Merlot opened up to where the tab was. He doubted that he would find any actual crimes against humanity, it wasn't normal for those people to be interrogated by such lowly Peacekeepers. There were not that many people who even committed crimes anyways, most people were scared to their core by the Hunger Games, either fearing for their lives or their children's. Strolling aimlessly around the desk Merlot found quite a surprise when he looked down at the page, taking the text in.John O'martin, District N/A. Criminal Activity: Treasonous Speech, Theft, Inciting Rebellion, Conspiring to Rebel, Attempted Rebellion, Assault Against a Peacekeeper, Illegal Visits Outside the Districts, Trespassing in Capitol Woods, Destruction of Capitol Property.
Instantly Merlot was afraid, how did someone commit that many crimes. It was unfathomable to Merlot that anyone could get away with that. Actually, it was unfathomable to Merlot that anyone would be able to live with themselves after committing that many crimes. The only thing that Merlot remembered to be a crime that he did not see on there was murder, which he was thankful about. How somebody could be that mentally screwed up just seemed impossible, and assaulting a Peacekeeper was not okay by any standards in Merlot's mind. "What the hell is wrong with this guy?"
Speaking under his breath, Merlot expected nobody to answer this question. Staring at the folder in his hand he was as close to speechless as he ever had been. Right now he wanted to sit down and drink until he threw up, but he had a duty to his country. He had to punish this criminal for his actions, but one would expect to get an easier assignment after failing so badly before. The only reason stirred from his thoughts was a Peacekeeper - who Merlot was unaware of - behind the one way glass speaking, "You going to do anything Noir? He will not be coming in until you call for him." Of course he was being watched, if he failed his assignment again he would undoubtably be dropped from the Peacekeeper ranks. If he failed he'd be returned to the Capitol, returned to his own device. To his unmeasurable debt, he could not do that.
Clearly the Peacekeeper was not one of his friends. He was one who would want Merlot to fail, he would pick out even the slightest worry shown by Merlot. He would be allowed to express his disdain before the miscreant came in. Truly he was worried, the man he was interrogating was even older than Merlot was. This was not going to be easy for Merlot, he never in the first place wanted to become a Peacekeeper. He was forced in, this was not what he was ready for. His training never prepared him for a situation like this. Even though his mind was cringing, he forced his voice to come out in a calm manner, "How could anyone commit that many crimes? How could anyone do that if they were sane?"
The sad thing was though, that somebody who acted that way was not sane. They clearly wanted to see the world in pain, they had no feelings for others. None at all, it was almost scary how one could act. It was surprising to Merlot that they even allowed this man to get to the detention center, under normal circumstances what he did would result in death. Probably the rebellion charges were the reasons for that, the Capitol wanted to know everything that they could about the rebellion, and then they would do what they wanted to the criminals. "I don't know Noir, I only do what I am told, maybe you should try that too."
Of course he was right, Merlot had to just get this over with. He knew what he had to do, but he still did not want to. Right now though Merlot's wants were not important right now, it was about his needs. Still, fright was not meant to happen because of the detainee's, it is meant to be caused by the Peacekeepers to the detainee's, "Call him in please" It was time now, time for Merlot to show that he belonged with the best Peacekeepers. Enigma, she was just a girl, but today, this was a man, he would have no problem dealing with this. And the easier it was for Merlot, the better. He would have no chance against this detainee if he did not use force the whole time.
