Alikia responded to my complement and affirmed my question by saying “Thank you....my names Alikia...”
At least that’s a sign of warming up to me. It’s hard for me to make friends because the only one that I’ve had in two years is Lacey, and she was only twelve. I had a few girlfriends, but I don’t think they actually count as ‘friends’ in that sort of way. Having her in an alliance is nice because you have the comfort of being with someone. It’s true that they can kill you in your sleep, but that’s basically the worst case scenario. There are so many advantages to being in an alliance, mentally and physically. It just makes you feel safer than being alone- as long as you actually trust them. This girl seems like a good ally… no, a good friend.
“..but you can call me Ali...” Alikia continues her sentence before opening the door to walk in the dining hall. I’m guessing that she’s as hungry as I am, because I just heard my stomach grumble a bit. We enter the large dining hall and smell the different foods clashing each other with their scents. I feel even hungrier now than before entering, but I use more of my willpower and patience when walking towards the food counter for a tray and a plate with some cutlery.
“My full name is actually Dicentra Gambler. The name Dicentra sounds girly so I ask people to call me Dice instead.” I say, revealing a little more about myself.
When we reach the tables, I get a selection of meats; beef, chicken, pork and fish to be exact. It covers a whole three quarters of my plate and I realized that it should have some sort of balance. I take two carrots and plop a scoop of mash potatoes before taking a small bread loaf from the counter of food. I noticed that most of my foods are particularly- unhealthy, but I rarely get to eat this stuff anyways. I wish I could bring some of this food to Lacey, because I know that she’d want some. I think back to the day of the reaping and remember those pancakes that mom made for us. It didn’t taste as good as the food here, but I still long for it.
I turn around to see what Ali had put on her plate.
