Alice's style of dress often gets her several odd glances, even in District One. The petite dresses she chooses from her large wardrobe are often adorned with bright, bright colors and swooshing lines of thread or plastic pearls. She likes going over the top with little things such as this, but claims she doesn't do it for the attention it draws, but for sticking out. The girl was never very fond of fitting in, and it surely shows.
A bland brown color, Alice sometimes despises her hair, wether it be for the fact that it won't cooperate with her thistle brush, or the very shade of the last little strand. She has often tried to color it with berries, paints, colored pens, but it never works for her. Always the same, she fears she will never change.
Oftentimes making strange facial expressions because of the... things she will catch a glimpse of, people will assume. When she makes an angry face, they'll tell their friends they saw a rather sour little girl that particular afternoon, and how good their luck was that they didn't have to stop and converse with her! Or, when she shows signs of worry, gossip will spread about a secret lover, maybe a pregnancy, oh the teenage drama of District One. But in reality, she's a rather sweet girl. Nodding her head in hello to strangers, helping old ladies cross the street, asking the little ones how their days were. Yeah, that type. Her happy-go-lucky will eventually get on some nerves, but she keeps a positive attitude (too positive, some say) and brushes it off, exclaiming that everyone was her friend!
With the luxuries District One has to offer, it's no surprise to anyone that the teenager's put on a little weight. Embarrassed by the rounded shape of her face, it goes to add a little more to that "I look like an eleven year old!" look she has going on. With her short height, chubby features, it's a surprise she hasn't been handed a kiddy menu at the local diner.
i, i'll get by
i, i'll survive
when the world's crashing down
when i fall and hit the ground
i will turn myself around
don't you try to stop it
i, i won't cry
Aside from her obsession over looking different, Alice is a very odd girl. Well... completely bonkers is more like it. Ever since the traumatizing death of her parents as a child, she's retreated into her own world, where her surroundings are transformed into something different, something magical. Bright mushrooms grow in place of stout buildings, talking flowers twine themselves around lampposts and talking animals bounce and scurry everywhere. They're all rather friendly with her... it's just the people she has to watch out for. One wrong step and she has someone yelling "Off with her head!" Rather unpleasant.
Though Alice enjoys the hallucinations, they can be dangerous. She'll wander into the middle of the street when a bicycle zooms past, nearly colliding with her, or a patrol car, moving at top speed, having to swerve to avoid the girl. When she's retreated into her mind, she's really a danger to anyone and everyone near her. There's no telling what sorts of accidents could occur when she isn't paying too much attention to the modern, real things.
Aside from hallucinations, the event has left her quite bipolar. One minute singing like a bird, happy as happy can be, the next threatening brutal murder on the man who bumped shoulders with her. Little outbursts like this have given her an unsavory reputation, one of fear and worry. This could have also played a part in most of the school fearing or disliking her, terrified to even approach the teenager, risking a large scene in front of everyone for absolutely no reason at all.
i found myself in wonderland
get back on my feet again
is this real?
is this pretend?
i'll take a stand until the end
Born to two parents of considerable wealth, Alice lived a rather pleasant, normal childhood. Getting most things she wanted, when she was finally old enough to have her name entered into the reaping bowl, she hadn't been forced to sign up for tesserae like some of the district's poor, and she was nearly guaranteed a safe spot every year, with all of the volunteers and multiple slips for a single name. Safety.
That all changed the night of the accident.
A drunk with a switchblade, her parents out for a late night stroll, too much money in their pockets. A robbery gone bad, the two Alice loved the most were found dead on the street, suffering from multiple wounds. The man was tracked down and tried on two accounts of murder, eventually found guilty and promptly executed. The authorities expected Alice to regain her composure, to find closure in the fact that her parents' murderer was now dead, that she was safe, once again, from the horrors of the real world. But all Alice felt was a sick guilt. She thought the robber should have murdered her instead. She deserved it more than they. She was greedy, demanding, selfish. A terrible child all around. They gave her everything, spoiled her rotten. Why did the best of people always pay the highest price?
Alice sank into a deep depression, slowly losing control of her whimsical mind. She created a new world, one of bright colors and silly characters. She retreated into it when it seemed unbearable, when it seemed she could not continue on without them. After time, the world she created transformed into something a bit darker. The colors grew dull, the characters more and more mischievous. But Alice has yet to notice. She despises being alone, and the beings of her land bring her comfort and security. That's all she asks from anything, and they supply her with it, even with darker intentions on the horizon.
