Roxanne Waverly, District 1

Roxie is slightly short for her age, but years of training for the Hunger Games have made her strong and fit. She has long, wavy blonde hair that she almost always wears down, except when she is training or doing some other kind of physical activity. She will occasionally dye it in an attempt to keep up with the trends in the Capitol, but it is currently its natural blonde color. Roxie’s eyes are a bright brown, and are usually full of energy. The fourteen year old has fair skin on which she puts very little makeup, as her mother thinks she is too young for it.

Roxie has been training for the Hunger Games since she was very young, so she is quite strong for her size and is a fast runner. She does not excel in hand-to-hand combat because of her size. Roxie absolutely hates being short, and will often wear high heels to appear taller. She knows how to swim, but is not very good at it as she does not usually have access to a lot of water. Roxie is light on her feet, has pretty good aim, and knows how to wield several different weapons, such as knives, spears, and a bow and arrow. Her intense weapons practice has made Roxie’s hands callused, and she finds this embarrassing because she doesn’t think they are girly enough. She refuses to go anywhere without a coat of nail polish on her fingernails.

Roxie has a very girly fashion sense. She loves to wear fashionable skirts and dresses. However, she does not wear mini skirts or dresses – her clothes are always of a modest length (another of her mother’s rules). Most of Roxie’s clothes are bright colors or have lots of sparkles on them. Her outfits are occasionally ostentatious because she loves to try out different styles and wear what she thinks is “in” in the Capitol.

Roxie is a very bubbly, happy girl. Unfortunately, she is not exactly the brightest bulb, and could be referred to as an “airhead”. She doesn’t really care much about that, though, because the way she sees it, “being smart won’t help win the Hunger Games”. Again, she’s not the brightest. :/ Roxie is very friendly and extroverted. She wants to be friends with everyone because she wants to be popular, at least until she becomes a famous victor. Although she is very open to making friends, her training for the Games has at least taught Roxie not to trust anybody, so while she will spend time with people and be nice to them, it takes a lot for her to be able to trust anybody.

Although she does not excel in school, Roxie completely believes every bit of Capitol propaganda, and she is determined to one day win the Hunger Games, once she is a few years older and will have a better chance. After all, in her opinion it would be much more fun to totally annihilate the competition when she is 17 than it would be to simply win while she is fourteen. No one would dare call Roxie an airhead when it comes to Hunger Games training; the fourteen year old is ruthless and has lots of drive and determination. When it comes to the games and winning lifelong glory, Roxie is fully committed to being the best she can be. Unfortunately, she already thinks she is amazing; the girl is very cocky and overconfident, and she often rushes into things without thinking them through.

Due to her overconfidence, Roxie absolutely hates when someone disagrees with her or proves her wrong. She can hold a grudge against someone forever. However, she will also be careful not to show that she dislikes someone, because she wants everybody to like her. Again, the girl wants to be popular. If she does not get the opportunity to be in the Hunger Games, she hopes to be a socialite like her mother, and dreams of moving to the Capitol (even though she knows it could never happen) to be a fashion designer or a stylist in the Games.

Roxie grew up in District One with her mom, dad, and 10 year old brother Blaze. Her dad works making luxury goods for the capitol, but that’s about all Roxie knows of his job; she isn’t going to need a job when she is older, because she plans to be a Victor. Her mother is a stay-at-home mom, although this term doesn’t really apply to the woman because she is usually out attending parties that attempt to mimic those in the Capitol. Roxie’s family is very wealthy, so she does not know what it is like to go without anything. Growing up in what her family considers to be the Capitol’s favorite district, Roxie believes every bit of propaganda taught at her school about the glory of the Capitol.

This belief, combined with encouragement from her father from a very early age, contributed to Roxie’s dream of becoming a victor in the Hunger Games one day. Ever since they were old enough, Roxie’s father has been training her and Blaze for the Games. They go running, work with weapons, and lift weights in preparation. They also watch the Hunger Games closely every year and take notes on the arenas and the victors. Although she occasionally tires of training and finds it tedious, she perseveres because she knows it is what she must do to win the Games.

Roxie has never excelled in school, but she has always managed to do well enough to advance to the next year with the rest of her classmates. In her free time (when she is not training or attending school), Roxie’s favorite thing to do is go shopping, an activity she often does with her mom. They have a good relationship, and Roxy is comfortable talking to her mom about her problems with things such as school and boys. Her relationship with her father consists mostly of training-she views him as her drill sergeant, although she does not hold it against him-she wants to win the Games, plus he buys her things, so in Roxie’s opinion this is completely fine. Roxie spends a lot of time with Blaze in training, but other than that they are not very close. The four year age gap makes them very different, and the only thing they really have in common is their mutual desire to be victors in the games.
