Name: Hayley Fhuze
Age: 17 [as of 57th Games]
Gender: Female
District/Area: Disrict 4
Appearance:
I'm pretty tall, about 5 feet 10 inches. I weigh 125 pounds, and am pretty skinny. People comment on my curves, which I have no lack of, but my lower ribs stick out way too far. My body is built for strength and speed, and I can lift about 100 pounds, which is good for hauling in fish. My hair is dark brown, but has blonde highlights from the sun. It goes down to my lower back, and I usually wear it on the top of my head in a sloppy ponytail. It usually stays pretty straight.
I tilt my head a lot when I talk. My skin is a light tan color. It doesn't tan easily because my hair is over my face most of the time. The rest of my body is darker tanned than my face. There is a scar on my right cheek that runs down to the top of my neck.
My eyes are light gray, which is very unusual for the people of my district. You can see a clever glint in them when I get an idea. My lips are usually partially parted when I'm thinking, and are described as "full."
I refuse to wear bright colors, especially pink. I'm usually found in dark colored washout t-shirts such as black, gray, red, or blue. My pants are skinny and black or gray. My shorts are very short, usually above mid-thigh. My mother makes most a lot of my clothes, but a good amount is store-bought.
Personality: On the outside I seem pretty dark. Dark clothes, dark personality, the whole nine yards.I'm not that brainy. I get ok grades. I am pretty much a pessimist. I guess you could say I have a tight grip on reality. That tight grip usually makes it hard for me to trust people, or to love them. I'm afraid of losing the people I love, so I choose not to love at all.
I have a few friends. We bonded over our common experience, losing family members. We're all only children now. In our district, not many people die, so we're one of the few. We all had to accept their medals of honor. It pains me to know that other kids are going through this. It also makes me feel better to see that I'm not alone.
I became somewhat dark when I was 12, right after the accident. It helps me cope. I'm a pessimist because I feel that life sucks. I used to be a semi-optimist before, because I always "saw the glass as half full." There's really no point in mourning the past. The wierd thing is, I smile a lot. Some people think its a crazy smile, but mostly it's just me smiling at the little things. The mockingjays singing in the trees, the way the salt air smells, the way the wind blows through my hair, simple things no one ever thinks about.
History: My parents met in Grade 11 when my mother, Tai Mae, was working in a tailor's shop and my father, Kato, had a hole in his pants. That was the first and only time they met before an unfaithful night. They were both 31, marrying age, and my mother's father had just died. She was crying on the front steps of her house, and my father recognized her and went over to console her. Well, if you can put two and two together, you can figure out that's how my oldest brother, Aikon, came along. My parents eloped that night even though they barely knew each other. My father had just been a lowly fisherman, and my mother was a seamstress. They were both very poor. Now my father has a whole squad of fishermen and my mother runs a tailor’s shop.
I was the fourth, the only girl, and last born. I had 3 older brothers, Aikon, 19, Zayne, 18, and Ryyn, 16. I loved them. They never treated me like a girl, and always took me everywhere with them. I got to experience a lot more than girls my age ever did.
Like I said, my brothers took me everywhere. I was out fishing while other girls were at home cleaning and playing with dolls. They turned me into the tomboy I am today. I was tough, and could hang with the best of them. I also speak mymind, which can get me into trouble with the Peacekepers occasionaly.
Aikon was pretty cool. He was a rebel, a bad boy, and taught me how to hop fences and prank people. Ryyn was a braniac. He taught me all the stuff he knew about school. He always helped me with my homework. Zayne was always my favorite. He was the one who taught me to swim, fish, and make fishhooks, pretty normal stuff for the boys. Girls were only expected to clean and care for the men. Zayne wanted me to be able to stand up for myself, and hold my ground. Then that horrible night happened.
It was right after nightfall. My brothers never got off work until after nine. I was out fishing on one of my father’s boats looking for nocturnal fish, because that was my and Ryyn’s favorite type. The fish packaging plant was on the west end of town, across the lake. I had been diving, and when I came up for air, I saw a bright, flickering, orange light coming from the west end. That wasn’t unusual at night, because the workers would have their lanterns on as they were walking home, but usually, the light was coming from the ground. That’s when I realized what was happening. My house was on my way to the plant. I rowed as fast as I could and ran in the house. I shouted at my parents that the plant was on fire and ran back out and towards it. Even though I was running as fast as I could, I didn’t get there in time. The fire had already been put out, the plant was burned to the ground, and they were wheeling out bodies. I slumped down to the ground. I don’t think I cried until about a month after their funerals. I was lost without my brothers. They were the only things that kept me going, and their memories are barely enough. Now I’m just a person with a kind-of black aura, friends who are pretty much the same, gets good grades, and doesn’t talk much.
