Vulcan Lavoi, District Nine

Vulcan is around 6 foot, with dark brown hair. His fringe drops down to the level of his eyebrows, and he has blue eyes that are sometimes mistaken for grey. He has thin, pale lips and he rarely smiles, instead he seems to scowl at nearly everyone and everything.

He’s not overly muscular, but enough to lift heavy items. He has a slightly bent finger, from when he dislocated it when he was eleven and his older brother pushed it back in for him, but didn’t do it properly. Vulcan is also missing one of his molars on the top of his mouth from when he got into a fight.

Vulcan is very quick-witted, cunning and sarcastic. To strangers or people he dislikes, he can appear hostile, threatening and unfriendly, but to the people he knows he shows a softer, vulnerable side that scares him. He hates being weak, because he’s grown up poor and has a view on life that weakness will simply kill you faster.

He’s also very stubborn and arrogant, and will never admit to being wrong to other people. If he realises he’s wrong, he’ll change the subject or snap at the person he’s talking to. He does have a bit of a temper, but never uses violence unless he’s in a certain situation.

He can get irritated by people, but knows who’s acceptable to be sarcastic to, and who’s not. He would do as he’s told, unless he really had no respect for them.

Vulcan grew up in the rougher part of Nine, but always tried to keep himself and his four siblings out of trouble. The eldest, Aeo, was always in trouble though, and it eventually found its way back to the family.

The ‘Lavoi’ name became associated with trouble, and before either of the other three had a chance, they were labelled as trouble-makers with their brother. Whilst the youngest, Damian, tried to separate himself from the rest of them, Vulcan and Francesca went along with it.
When Vulcan turned fourteen, he got into a fight with some of the richer kids because of what they were saying about him and his family, and lost a tooth in the process.

After that, he pretty much lost what little of a social life he had to begin with. Aeo, after graduating from school with practically no qualifications, struggled to find a job and ended up packaging soap for a living.

And with Aeo relying on his parents still and not paying rent, it effects the other three badly. Money is tight, and Vulcan’s Dad spends most of his time working in the factory, making shampoo and hair gels. His Mum works in a factory that makes any household items made out of plastic, and that means that neither parent is around the house much. Though they do try to be.

Seeing as Aeo isn’t much help either, Vulcan looks after Francesca and Damian, whilst trying to live a life of his own. He helps around the house as much as he can, and always tries to make sure that Francesca and Damian get good grades, seeing as he sees it too late for himself and Aeo.

Vulcan does have a small group of friends, Amy Haston, his beautiful blonde-haired girlfriend, Georgie Haston, Amy’s gothic, sarcastic twin, Bevan Colls, Vulcan’s sport-obsessed neighbour and Ian Well, a geeky boy that lives two doors down. All of them live on the same street and their parents all work in the same factories.

Vulcan also works part-time loading up the trains with the products, which brings in a small amount of money to help pay all of the harsh bills they receive almost daily.
