Appearance:
Opal is a pale and thin girl, often seen huddled and quivering as painful memories assault her mind. She has wavy auburn hair that falls down to her shoulders that she always leaves loose. Her eyes are a deep blue and reflect years of psychological meltdown. Opal is a little tall for her age, but it's not so much that it's immediately noticeable. She always wears simple clothing, never caring much about fashion.
Opal is depressed every day and is constantly thinking about suicide. She never lets this show, however. She is always trying to smile at people and hide her inner pain. If one looks closely, though, they can see the deep sadness in her eyes.
Personality:
Opal hates pain, be it her own or someone else's. Whenever she sees someone in pain, she tries to do whatever she can to ease their suffering. She is deaf, but never thinks "why me" thoughts. She's incredibly generous, willing to give everything she has to those in need.
Despite her loving and generous personality, Opal may not be entirely sane. She is often huddled in a corner, shaking as she remembers the two worst moments of her life: seeing her younger brother drown and walking outside to see her mother's lifeless body hanging from a tree. She doesn't like people seeing this side of her and would rather be remembered for her kind personality.
Opal is afraid of the Hunger Games. Children having to suffer and die is an unimaginably horrible fate in her opinion. She also knows that if she was reaped, she'd have a serious disadvantage with her deafness. On the other hand, if she was in the arena, it'd be a simplified way of dying. She wouldn't have to worry about forcing the noose around her neck or the knife to her chest. Someone else would do it for her, and for that reason a part of her actually longs for her name to be called at the Reaping.
History:
Opal lived a great life when she was younger. She had two happy and well-off parents and her younger brother, Leo, was born when she was ten years old. But when she was twelve, her life began going downhill. She was playing at the river with her younger brother, and he was splashing around in the shallows. Opal had her head turned for just a few minutes, watching something that she doesn't care to remember. Due to her deafness, she couldn't hear her brothers cries for help. When she looked back, he was already underwater.
She searched for hours to no avail, never unearthing his body. It washed up on the shore a few miles down a few days later, bloated and waterlogged. That was the day the next terrible thing happened. She had walked into her small backyard and was greeted with the sight of her mother's limp corpse hanging from a tree branch, swaying gently in the wind.
Opal never forgave herself for what happened. If she had just been watching her brother more carefully, he and her mother would still be alive. Opal became depressed and is constantly considering suicide in order to rejoin her loved ones. She decided to put it off until her father was dead, though, so that she wouldn't be leaving him all alone in this cruel world. He also became depressed, and now Opal has to take care of him and work an extra job just to keep them in their tiny shack. She tries to think of it as her way of apologizing to her brother: keeping their father alive.
