Personality:
Soukina stands at 5', a tiny spindly framed woman. She's got dark skin the color of treek bark and black eyes, shiny and full of life. Her mouth is always opened in a smile. Her hair is frizzy and white. Soukina wears no make up on her thin dry lips, hollow cheeks or crooked nose.. She is rail thin and has a slightly stooped posture, except when she's throwing back her head, laughing.
During the day, Soukina dresses in the work clothes of the field. Her skin is rough and creased from working in the sun and the earth, and her fingernails are ragged. After dark, in the hidden black market of the 11th District, she envelops herself in dark a dark burlap dress and shawl, heaving a large bag full of her fortune-telling instruments.
Ever since she was a little girl, Soukina wanted to be noticed. From the moment she was forced by the capitol to go out into the fields and reap, she would dance and sing between the rows. In the beginning it was all sunshine for Soukina. However, when her older sister was drafted as a Tribute and slaughtered at the Hunger Games, Soukina's life became more serious. Although she still carries sunshine within her heart, her demeanor is rather more demure around the Peacekeepers and superiors in the fields.History:
When she's at home or telling fortunes after dark, Soukina's light shines the most brightly. She's smiling (and laughing if out of earshot of the Peacekeepers). These days, even though she doesn't have much to smile about, but she maintains her strength. All of her three daughters are grown and have moved to Capitol-provided shacks in other parts of the district, and her husband Gerad is dead. However, her interactions with the District Folk keep her occupied.
The maternal instinct that guided her in raising her daughters (thankfully all avoided the Games) never retreated. In fact, she likes to treat all of her fortune costumers as her own babies. Prone to being touchy-feely, Soukina loves to give hugs and pinch cheeks. There's a lot of bitterness and anger in District 11. Soukina intends to be the antidote to all that rage.
Soukina was born before the destruction of District 13 and the inception of the Hunger Games. Her mother and father are a blur to her, as they were both worked to death when she was five years old. She was raised by her aunt Rubie and her cousins. During the course of her life, Soukina did nothing but dance, sing, and dig in the fields. That is until the year she turned 20 and her second baby was born.Codeword: ODAIR
In the shack where Soukina's mama gave birth to her, beneath the floor boards, Rubie found a book and dusty old pack of playing cards. Soukina, who had learned to read thanks to her mama, could make out some of the words. But after trial and error, she managed to decipher the entire text. It was a special book that explained how to read the cards, make love potions and throw down chicken bones to tell the future. Fascinated, Soukina taught herself to do all those things. This came in handy the following year, when the third baby was born. The fields were not doing well, and the Capitol was demanding more food than ever. By sneaking into dusky lot where the black market dealings were held, Soukina managed to set up a make-shift shop.
Even though times were tough, people still managed to spare a few ounces of bread or half a pound of cheese for a special love charm or the know the future of a stunted baby. It didn't take long for word to spread, that not only could Soukina "predict the future" but she could also give advice as to how to improve said future. With that extra income, Soukina's babies may have been hungry... but at least they never starved, like many others. Someone from the Capitol might call her a charlatan. But to say that to her face would cause great offense. Even though she didn't have objective evidence about her hidden art, Soukina had great faith in it, and she believed in it with all her heart.
Now that the babies are grown up and have babies of their own, Soukina spends most of her free time in the black market, buying a little sugar cane wine or cracking jokes with the shimmy girls that sell their kisses for cheap.
