life is bigger, it's bigger than you, and you are not me
the lengths that I will go to
Moving out into his own place had been one of the best decisions Maverick had ever made. He loved having his own space, even a tiny studio apartment, just to stretch out in. He loved organizing his own things, decorating the walls with retro colors and photos of an earlier, more glamorous Capitol. He loved the implied freedom, and often came home very late at night, drunk and full of life. It was, in short, a step up for him.
Of course, there were certain downsides. No one cooked for him (not that his mother cooked much, anyhow). No one cleaned his room. It could be a little lonely, especially since he had let his last relationship drift. But really the only thing that truly bothered him about moving out was how his parents had treated his absence. Instead of moaning about how much they missed him, they went out and got themselves an Avox.
Oh yes, he'd been replaced by an Avox.
A traitor. He understood the need for someone to clean the house, but when Maverick realized they intended for her to be something of a nanny to Midnight, his sister seven years his junior. Except that the Avox they had chosen was actually younger than Midnight. How did that make any sense? But when he pressed his parents about it, they tutted and said that the girl was very quiet, cleaned well, and made a good companion for Midnight.
It had been a slap in the face. Good company with a tongueless waste of space? Maverick fumed. But he had learned early on that showing his anger only result in dismissal. He had moved out after all; what was to keep them from changing the locks? It occurred to him, several days after he first met the girl (he refused to think of her by name) that perhaps she had been one of the Avoxes his father created. Perhaps he felt pity for her, which disgusted Maverick. He'd avoided home for over a week after that, but he couldn't stay away forever. His fortunes were not great and he eventually grew tired of eating pasta.
He made sure to arrive at the house before Midnight returned from school and while his father was still at the surgery center. His mother would be around the house but she usually dozed during the afternoons. He tugged down his orange and blue striped shirt, lifted his chin, and rang the buzzer. He hoped, hoped, hoped the stupid interloping Avox would be the one to answer.
