Yucca Ephedra
They dressed her in black that day. They only hint of color on her body was her white, fluttering hair, but her father wrapped it up in a black scarf. She refused to look at her mother, who's face was gaunt, her once full stomach deflated like a balloon. They walked there in a stony silence, Yucca's four year old hand was clasped in her older brother's. There were no words to be said. Even Yucca understood. It was all set up when they arrived. All Yucca's mother had to do was sign a certificate and then they could continue on with the awful service.
"Wait,"the Peacekeeper had said, "the name...did you have one picked out?"
"Yes," said the destroyed woman in barely a whisper. For, they had already picked it out months ago. It had been a happy word on the lips of the family, a name they used freely, although they were still in anticipation. It was the name that bounced around in Yucca's head, finally growing into the form of a friend...it was-
Nothingness. Yucca found herself in the disorted phase between dreams and conciousness, suddenly floating through darkness, rolling over on the cold ground. Wait? The cold ground? This time, she grasped conciousness and her eyes opened. The first thing she saw was the dark sky that didn't touch the ground around her, for it was obstructed by trees. Yucca raised her head and squinted around to see that she was in a clearing, surrounded by other bodies! Her heart skipped a beat and her breath quickened. Where they all dead?
She glanced around and saw that the two people nearest to her, Nil and her brother were breathing, eyes closed. They were asleep as she was before...as she was before...her eyes travelled around to see that everyone else was, thankfully, also asleep.
What in the world had happened?! One minute she was speaking to Nil, the next locked in a dream world, revisiting that somber day over and over until she awoke in this new place. A chill ran down her spine in realization. Someone had moved her. Someone had touched her and brought her here. All of them...
Yucca desperately searched her mind for anything. But, all she found was blankness. It was like when a tape on the television went wrong. There would be the video, then all of a sudden, crinkling snow would appear on the screen, then the video again, never picking up at the same place it was before the snow. That's what it was like now. She was speaking to Nil, then blackness from an unknown source...surely they all hadn't passed out themselves? Luckily, this pause in the video of life didn't contain snow. Unluckily, it contained memories. The most popular of her mind was the memory of that particular day. The one with her mother's tears, black clothes and the name...that name that hangs over her household, dooming them all to forever remember it.
Yucca tried to push those memories away to find a memory of what had happened between speaking to Nil and waking up here, but it was all blank. There were no memories there. Only dreams. She slumped back. It was useless, she wouldn't be able to remember...her eyes found the sky, still dark with a mixture of light blue on the east horizon. The moon still shone bright, a white halo around it. Something was different about the moon...Yucca's heart skipped a beat. It wasn't a crescent anymore. It was the phase before a half-moon, which meant they'd been asleep about three days...who could tell what had happened in those three days?
Yucca swallowed hard, fear building up in her body, flowing through her veins. This wasn't a joke anymore. It wasn't when she'd looked up to find a dead girl. It wasn't when she saw another have her throat slit. It wasn't when she felt the heat on her face and saw flames licking the ceiling. It wasn't now as Yucca realized that this wedding was deadly. Surely they'd all be dead by the time they got off this island?
That brought another thought to mind. If three days had passed, that meant it would be eight more days until the full moon, eight more days until she got back to Net...
I'm waiting for you, Yucca. Come home. I'm waiting.
I'm so close, Net. Almost there.
Yucca raised herself onto her elbows and then eventually her onto her feet. She was unsteady at first, stumbling back and narrowly avoiding the sleeping body of another. Her uneasy breathing filled the air, odd against the even breathing of the others. They'd surely be rising soon if she was awake...rising to find out who this murderer was...
A chill went down Yucca's spine, all the hairs on the back of her neck standing straight up. She wondered how close this murderer could possibly be...they could be watching her right now. She spun around hastily and squinted towards the trees. However, no dark shapes emerged, no one crept up behind her and death did not yet swoop down upon Yucca Ephedra.
I want someone to be awake with me, she thought, I don't want to be awake alone...Her eyes swept over the ground, wondering who to wake first. She momentarily ran the option of Nil through her mind, but decided she'd rather not deal with the girl's irritable mood. Then who....? The answer came so suddenly that Yucca wondered why she hadn't thought of it before. Silver! She could wake Silver! Her friend! Silver would help her out, Silver would make her feel better.
Yucca searched the ground around her for a moment, but did not catch sight of the silver-haired girl. Perhaps she was farther along. Yucca wove through the sleeping mass of people, eyes open for a flash of silver. Once or twice she thought she saw her, but it was only the moon reflecting off of someone's glasses. She looked over every single face, but no Silver. Panic set in over Yucca's skin, like glass shards. Where was she? Perhaps she hadn't looked hard enough. Yucca went around again, but once more, no Silver. And not the third time...nor the fourth...nor the fifth...
Yucca's breath was short and quick, goosebumps up and down her arms. "Silver?" she began in a soft voice which she gradually raised with each syllablle. "Silver? Silver?! Silver, Silver, where are you?!" But, there came no appearance of the girl and desperation clouded over Yucca's mind. What if the murderer had gotten her?! The very thought made Yucca suck in and shout, frantically, "Help! Help! Silver! My friend! She's gone! She's gone! Somebody help, please!"[/blockquote]
