Cattle were not the smartest, nor quickest of animals. But as the sweltering heat reached epic proportions, they managed to make a mockery of themselves. They moved like molasses, ignored sensible and cruel nudges alike. No matter what Mace and his not-so-trusty canines did, nothing changed. The cows stayed in their pens, eating around their droppings and generally ignoring the sweltering earth. Mace wished he could do the same. But if any of the cows died of heat stroke, he would be personally responsible.
The day still had several hours left when through the gleaming heat he caught sight of one of his brothers. They helped him, sometimes, when they could be spared from feeding the pigs. But not lately, not in this heat. As disgusting as pigs got, at least they lived in cool mud. So why bother coming near the thick herd?
Mace made his way gradually over to the boy, only to be told in clipped tones that he was wanted back at the house. Mace tapped him under the chin with the prod, reminded him about his manners, and then sent him ahead. He took one look at the grazing, statue-like herd. "Any of you choose this moment to die and I will make sure your carcass gets fed to the dogs."
He hooked his prod on the wooden fence as he slipped through it, moving at something between a walk and a job. The wall of heat prevented him from going any faster. But without more information, he didn't dare dawdle. Hardly anyone called him out from his work. He was simply too valuable to the home. Mace wove between the pig pens, through the barn, and then finally slapped the back door open. Three of his sisters sat at the kitchen table, peeling turnips.
"New girl out front. Ma says you're to help."
"You - what? You must. be. joking."
He had her attention then, as his voice turned from tired to threatening. The girl shook her head once and then returned to her task. Mace's fingers tucked against his palm as he stomped through the house, intent on finding Ma or chucking the girl's things out the front door. How could they manage to feed another mouth? Who would give up a child?
And he rounded the corner to the foyer, he realized his first mistake. This was no child. And his second was to approach her with fists. Something snapped in him, thunder in his heart, and he came to a dead halt, eyes wide. Words rarely came easily to Mace, and when they did, they were full of hate. So when it finally occurred to him to greet her, he had been standing still for a few seconds. "You're new."
Oh yes, bloody brilliant. He forced his fingers straight at his sides, suddenly very conscious of just how dusty he was from the cattle herding. "Need help with your stuff?" That was better, he thought. Polite.
