Wisty walked outside of her family's little farm house and stretched in the warm sunlight. It was a good day. The birds were chirping a pleasant tune, and her rooster, Eggbert, was doing what seemed like flirting with the hens. Wisty quietly walked over to the chickens so she wouldn't scare him. Then, she scooped Eggbert up in her arms and whispered to him, "We're going to the market, now."
Wisty put Eggbert in a basket and walked off to the market. Her mother had asked her to buy something for her soon-to-be-sibling. Her father had suggested clothes, so Wisty thought a dress would be nice, supposing it was a girl. There was really no way of knowing, except for hunches. Wisty's mother has been assuming that the baby would be a girl.
Wisty walked towards a small shop and asked to see the baby clothing. The short, old merchant didn't speak, he knew about Wisty's hearing problem and how she hated to ask someone to repeat themselves.
Wisty was shown the only two baby dresses they had. One was blue and white, with a pattern almost like a table cloth or a picnic blanket. The other was plain, white with a chicken on it. Eggbert clucked at the chicken and Wisty smiled. "The chicken one, please," she asked.
Wisty decided to take a new route back to her farm. Along the way, she and Eggbert had passed a chicken farm. The sound of clucking had filled the air! The clucking and the sight of all the hens had made Eggbert nervous. He jumped out of the basket and ran away from her, far down a path beside the road. "Eggbert!" Wisty shouted after him; But it was too late. Eggbert was gone.
