Today is Sunday, my day off. Today I have to find out everything I need to know to cross over into district 11 to get the medicine for my father.
On my expedition along the fence I have ventured further and further south. Mostly the fence doesn't change nor does the landscape behind it or the peacekeeper patrolling it. But pretty far in the south where the trees are pretty dense I stop and stare with incredible eyes. A tree has fallen over, maybe struck by lightning, and knocked down the fence and obviously nobody has noticed yet. It would be easy to balance across it and set foot into the woods that lay behind the fence but everybody knows that it's forbidden.
So I simply sit down near the spot and take out my water bottle and slice of bread. I have a drink and chew on the bread. It tastes almost sweet after a while. All the time my eyes and ears are open to see if anybody comes by. The only living being is a squirrel that jumps across so I finally mutter. "What the heck." and stand up. Soon I'm balancing across the tree and jump into the dense, dark forest.
Various sounds make me listen up, stop dead in my tracks and hold my breath but nothing attacks me. Maybe the forest is not that dangerous after all. Strangely enough the trees stand further apart and I'm out in the open after about two hours. The air smells weird. I can't put my finger on what it is but it's not pleasant.
In front of me a large dusty area stretches as far as I can see and the sky is somewhat darkened.
"Strange." I say to myself but don't hestitate to walk further. The sun tells me that I have about three hours before I have to go back.
