One foot in front of the other. That's how Faith kept going. Her dizzy spells had been getting worse lately and with all that was going on, she needed to find out. Fingering the change inside her pocket as it bounced around with each step she took, she counted it out by feel. Damon had given her just enough for a pregnancy test. She hoped it would be enough, anyway. It was a generous sum from him considering how poor they were right now. But she was sure he wanted to know as bad as she did.
The beams from the dishearteningly bright sun poked at her through the leaves of what trees were standing and currently shielding her from complete exposure to the sun. It was a long walk to the right part of the black market... quite an annoying long walk. Normally she wouldn't mind, but she hasn't been feeling up to suck tasks lately. She had to tough it though. The reapings were only a day away now... and if she got reaped, she'd have to fight for her life. And that didn't cater to well to laziness due to feeling ill. And even if she didn't go in, what if Damon did. Then, she'd be having to fend for herself here instead.
As she walked she looked around at all the different kids running around all innocent, while everyone twelve years or older is moping about with death practically stamped on their foreheads. Twelve year olds were practically children to her. They were children. This is what the Capital did. They took the hearts of little girls and boys and forced them to grow up too fast. To miss their childhood completely for the entertainment of the monsters living withing their city's walls. Faith wasn't even that old yet, but she felt around twenty-five with everything going on.
Finally, she reached the section of the black market she was looking for. There was an old woman there behind the counter with some medical supplies. The woman looked up at her and raised a questioning eyebrow, with her arms crossed over her chest as she reclined back in her plastic chair. Great, 'tude, that's just what Faith wanted to deal with right now. She cleared her throat and tried to do her best to sound nice, "Do you have any pregnancy tests available for purchase?"
The girl behind the counter simply nodded and handed Faith one in a taped up package. She hoped this thing actually worked. Faith handed over the amount of coins the woman specified and walked away with the item. Now she just had to make it all the way back home. She stuck to the same path under the shade of the trees she had taken to get here. Though, they unfortunately did little as the sun had now moved to into just the right position where it hit most of her body.
She sneered in discomfort from the heat and kept walking, trying to reach home. It took almost two hours, but she finally made it back and into their little shack. She quickly looked around for Damon, hoping he was still home. "Love, I picked up the test. Am gonna go take it now. I'll tell you what the result is." She went into the bathroom and locked the door behind her before starting to try and get the box open. She couldn't get it with all the tape wrapped around it so she ran out to the kitchen and just cut the top off with a knife that was lying around on the counter.
However, when she did so, the part giving the time estimate, stating it would be roughly an hour before she got a result fell and she didn't see it, as it had tape covering it. Faith drug herself back into the bathroom and pulled the test out, reading what little instructions could be seen and doing as instructed. Afterwards, she sat there on the bathroom counter, with door locked, staring at it. She was puzzled as to why it just remained blank. It gave no sign of even trying to read anything.
She was so desperate for the answer, so she sat their vigilantly waiting as long as it would take. If it hasn't said by the end of the day, she would give up. But good money was spent on this thing, so it had better work. She even prayed to whoever or whatever was listening to her, that the result would show soon and either confirm or deny her suspicions. She had told Damon she wanted kids, just not yet. Though, in all truth, she would secretly be disappointed if the result was negative.
Finally after about forty-five to fifty more minutes, most of which she spent pacing the floor, she heard it beep. Faith never claimed that she had any inhuman abilities, but she was pretty sure it was impossible for someone to move at the speed she just had. She moved out of the bathroom and sat down on her couch, staring at the pregnancy test result. Tears fell as she just kept watching the green plus sign flashing over and over again announcing that Faith DuPree was indeed pregnant.
"Damon.." It was barely a whisper. She was sure he was napping in bed, but maybe he'd heard her. She finally got up and practically ran into the bedroom, jumping on top of the form in the bad and landing so she was straddling him. "DAMON!!!" This time it was a shout of joy "Damon, look..." She held out the test for him to see. "...I'm pregnant."
