Adrenaline coursed through Wren's veins as she ran at top speed as far away as she could from the little produce stand in the town square. She could hear shouts behind her which made her heart race even more than it was from running. 'Oh no!' she thought. 'I'm caught! I'm so stupid! I never get caught! I'm in so much trouble! The Peacekeepers are going whip me in the square!'
She kept running, sprinting really, as fast as she could and the yelling voices began to sound further and further away. All she could do was find somewhere to hide until it was safe to go back home. Her eyes surveyed where she was and noticed she was on a street in the merchant stores, she kept running, wanting to separate herself from anyone who sold anything. She kept running, this time, being careful and staying in the shadows and keeping quiet. Eventually, she got down to almost the end of the merchants road when she got too tired to go on. There was a tiny alleyway between an apothecary and a butcher so she chose to hide in it.
Her body ached a bit from running and anxiety and she sat down against the wall of the butcher's store to catch her breath. Eventually her breathing slowed and she looked in her satchel. There werethree apples, a pear, and two husks of corn. She took an apple out of her bag, cleaned it with her jacket sleave and sunk her teeth into it. She knew it was illegal to steal but it was exciting and with only her father working, sometimes trading and a salary didn't get her everything that they needed. Now that she got caught, she wouldn't be able to go to the town square for a few weeks and would have to rely on just the black market. It puzzled her that she was caught. She had been doing this for 7 or 8 years now and never once did they catch her! Now, she really needed to be more careful. Maybe she was getting lazy.
