It's a Beautiful Day (Aradia)

I stand there, putting the final touches on my makeup- a light handed silver eyeliner, sky blue eyeshadow, and rose lipstick. Tonight is going to be amazing! It's going to be my first dance, and I have no idea what to expect. Best of all, Gabriel is taking me, and he seems like the kind of guy who might have had experience in these kinds of things before. I hope so. Where is he? I check the clock, tick-tocking away on the wall, just letting the seconds go by. 5 minutes late. I start to worry, but I try to heed my fretting mother's advice- not to mess up my dress. It'd suck- because this thing took forever to put on, maybe a day after that, too.

A sudden knock on the door startles me so much I have to take a second or two to calm myself down. It's just Gabe. Besides, he's probably dressed fancy too- not that I know what fancy means to him. From what I've seen,, it's a t-shirt and a good clean pair of shorts. I sigh before thrusting myself up, and almost killing myself by tripping over my gown, into the hallway leading to the door. Why did dad get such expensive tiles? They were always the most slippery.

Ok. I calm myself down, trying to figure out what I'm going to say when I open the door. Should I just wing it? No, last time I did that, I ended up saying something completely ridiculous. Why didn't I ever think of this kind of thing before hand? It isn't like me to plan ahead, or panic for that matter. So, what am I going to say? Something other than 'um...'. Something intelligent, maybe alluring. Like..."You look amazing." That sounds about right- but it also is seriously cheesy. Oh well, it's all I got, isn't it? My mind blanks further, so I can't really come up with anything else.

As my hands reach for the polished silver doorknob, I take a deep breathe. What's he going to look like? Oh, I hope I'm not dressed too fancy. I'm wearing a slinky sea foam green dress that clings to my body, and ends at my ankles. While it's not the easiest to walk in, even I agree that it makes me look nice. That's really hard, as I barely ever look even remotely pretty- most clothes just make me look like a wannabe mob boss. This dress actually makes me look like a girl. Quite an achievement. It's a strapless number, which makes me nervous it could fall down at any moment. The bottom of it blends into a deeper, serpentile color that reminds me of the bottom of the ocean. I just had to have it when I saw it- the designer brand meant nothing to me- but the colors did. They were my favorites, and the way they blended was masterful. When I turn, it glitters like a hidden diamond, a treasure. My mother always says that I could be beautiful if I tried, and today, I guess I did.

He looks...Disappointing. What was I expecting? A tuxedo? Gabe? Yeah right- I got my hopes way too high for him. Suddenly, I'm even more nervous. What if I'm dressed way to fancy for this? I sincerely hope not, because I have no idea what I'll do if I am. After all, I'm not exactly a trend setter- I just wear whatever is in my drawer usually. It looks like he's done the same, wearing jeans and a relatively clean collared shirt. Hm. I put on what I hope looks like a realistic smile, used to masking my emotions, and putting fake ones on. It's confident, like I totally know what I'm doing, and I can really be awesome at the dance. Unlike my actual feeling that I'm going to screw myself without meaning to. Not that anyone means to. See? I'm doing it in my thoughts already- wait till I'm on the floor. Then the real 'fun' begins.

The door slides open on well oiled hinges, that we have a separate employee to keep well working. I suppose he does all the other odd jobs in the mansion, but the door is his main one. It's 7 feet tall and imposing, supposed to keep robbers and thieves off of our property. Honestly though, if I were one of them, the door would just kind of encourage me to steal from the house. Not that it wasn't imposing enough as it was- the house. It's absolutely huge. So therefore, the door has to be. It's pearly white, and literally shines when the sun is out. I'm not sure what kind of wood it's made out of, assuming it's made out of wood. I guess I'm just not interested in that kind of stuff. My mother would want to know if it matched the burnished black tiles, it's exact measurements, everything, to make sure it looked good. She would fret and fuss and make everything a bigger deal than it had to be. Frankly, I didn't care in the slightest.

I try to rein in my thoughts to the person in front of me, standing, waiting for my reply. I gulp. What can I say? He doesn't look particularly spiff or clean, though our standards may be different. Oh, what to say? I bite my tongue, trying to think of something somewhat decent to tell him. Instead, I stay silent, and keep up the confident half smile that I plastered on my face like a fresh quote of paint. Can he tell I'm lost for words? I try not to make my emotions as obvious on my face as I normally do. I have to hold in a sigh, because things are already going wrong, and I haven't set a foot outside my house yet. Who can tell what kind of misfortune will fall upon me the moment I leave? Maybe I'll fall on my face. In the mud. Right outside the school. Why could I see that happening? No. I could not think like that. Optimistic. Optimistic. Come on Serena, I think, trying to encourage myself.
