This was it; these could be the last moments he had with his family. No; he wouldn’t think of it like that. Midas had just promised Julian he would come back, and he would say it again.
His parents came in first, teary eyed with pride. His mother kissed him on the cheek in excitement and his father went on and on about being a real man and how proud he was. They exchanged a final hug and Midas gave his father a firm handshake before they were escorted out. Midas was smiling again now; his parents joy and hope had renewed his excitement about the Reaping.
Next were the Bryze’s, but just Serge and Pashmina; he figured Julian would come in last and alone. Serge congratulated him fervently.
“I knew it would be you! I just knew it!” Serge proclaimed as he gave Midas a hug.
“You know, we really do think of you as our second son,” Pashmina began, her eyes swelling with tears.
“I think of you guys as my second family too. Don’t worry, Mrs. Bryze, I’ll be back…” He said trailing off, “but… if you know, something does happen, take care of Julian. Make sure he remembers why I did this and that … I love him.”
Pashmina was beside herself in tears now; Serge clapped Midas firmly on the back and nodded.
“We’ll take care of him,” Serge said, and led Pashmina back out after she gave Midas a final, teary hug.
Seeing Pashmina so upset really shook him up a bit. The Bryze's had almost been more of Midas's parents the last 9 years than his real mother and father had. They treated him as if he were their own and trained him to be the killing machine he was today. He was here because of them. Serge was beyond proud, a true Career parent, and like any real mother would be, Pashmina was beside herself with worry. Midas knew she truly didn't want him or Julian in the games, but trained them anyway so they could be ready in case they were.
After Mr. and Mrs. Bryze left, Midas took a heavy breath in and released it slowly. He knew who would be last to see him off. He stood silently waiting as the door to the small room opened one final time to allow his final visitor a chance to say goodbye.
