Age: 18
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 4
Appearance:
Fledger has red-brown hair that is just long enough to pull back into a pony. his eyes are a dull gray, but some days they look almost blue. He is tall, but he isn't sure how tall he is. Six feet, at least. He is on the lean side, even though he has always had enough food. His skin has tanned from long days of fishing, and his hands are calloused from work.Personality:
He has a tiny scar near the edge of his right eyebrow from an acident when he was young. Some of his friends were playing around with some knives, pretending to be in the Hunger Games, and Fledger got nicked by one of the blades. The kids never played that game again(at least not with real knives) and the hair from that part of Fledger's eyebrow never grew back. So he was left with an eyebrow that was split into two parts, seperated by a thin scar.
Though he doesn't have acne now, he has scars to prove he once did. He considers himself lucky not to have acne scars to the extent that other people do. His fingernails and chipped and split from work. There is an eternal layer of dirt under his fingernails that he can't seem to ever get out, and his hands always smell like fish. He doesn't particularly like that, but it's something you have to live with in district four.
Fledger is a very hard worker. The people on his fishing boat admire this about him. Sometimes, they'll step back and do no work at all, just to see if Fledger can do it all by himself. Or so they claim. They don't usually do this for long, though, because Fledger is also very responsible and likes to make sure everyone is doing their share of work.History:
Fledger has a natural instinct to protect other people, even people he doesn't know. He has a tendency to stick up for younger children who are accused of stealing at the markets. He knows what it's like to be in their shoes, and he'll often buy some small portion of food for such children. He knows his own small family could use that money, but he can't help it. He knows how much it would have meant to him if someone would have done the same when he was young.
While many people like Fledger because he is kind and easy to talk to, with a mouth that always seems to be smiling,
Fledger feels like no one really knows him. The public self that he puts on display is just a mask he hides behind, a person to become so he can forget the problems in his life. This is also why he works so hard. If he loses himself in his work, he doesn't need to think about himself.
He has a hard home life. His father died a few years ago, and after his death, his mother became very forgetful. She couldn't deal with the death of the man she loved so much.
Fledger feels like he has to hide his home life from his friends, because they won't understand. He likes to help other people with their problems, but when it comes to his own problems, he'd rather just ignore them. In his heart, Fledger knows the problems won't go away on their own. His mother won't suddenly be her old self again, and his father certainly isn't coming back. But he doesn't know how to confront his problems and fix them on his own.
He doesn't have many friends, mostly because he is very closed to other people. He will laugh and joke with his co-workers, but when the conversation turns to something more serious, he stays quiet. He's afraid that if he gets close to anyone, they'll find out about his mother. He would do anything to protect his mother from the ridicule that would come if anyone knew about her. He is convinced that no one would accept her how she is now.
He doesn't really like his mother that much. He would do anything to protect her, to keep her alive, including starving himself, but he sees her as a burden. He feels like his life would be better without her. He could have friends, he could find a girl, he could get married and have a family. If only his mother could take care of herself, he could move on with his life. He loves her, but he feels like she is holding him back. But mostly, he hates his father, for dying so suddenly and leaving with this mess. And he'll probably stay mad at his father for a long time, because he knows how to hold a grudge.
Fledger's father died when he was 14. After that, his mother became very forgetful. At first it wasn't so bad. His mother would forget to start dinner, or she would accidently let the fire go out, leaving the house cold for the day.Codeword: odair
Fledger thought the problem would go away. His mother was just in shock about his father's death, that was all. It had been sudden, after all. But then things got worse. Fledger would come home to find that his mother had forgotten how to cook, forgotten to get dressed for the day. One day, she even forgot who Fledger was. Fledger was afraid to leave her home alone. What if she went out and forgot where she lived? Or who she was? But Fledger had to go to work, had to get money so they could eat. He asked his neighbors to keep an eye on his mother. It was the only thing he could think to do.
Fledger wasn't very close to his father. He was always out playing with friends when he was young, and didn't have time for his father. So when his father died of a heart attack, Fledger was instantly filled with regrets. He didn't know a thing about his father, and now he would never get the chance to get to know him well.
After his father's death, Fledger had a hard time feeding himself and his mother. He stole food from stores (when he could get away with it). He was whipped more than once for stealing. One day, he decided what he needed was a job. He'd put it off for so long because he thought he could survive without one. But after seeing how thin his mother was getting, he realized he had to get her more food, which meant getting money. He ended up working on the same fishing boat his father had. The people there told him stories of his father sometimes, which he liked. He could feel just a little closer to the father he never knew that way. And it helped him remember a time when he was young and everything was perfect. His goal in life was to get enough money to go back to that time when things were perfect. At the very least, he would make sure any child he ever had would not have to go through the same things he had.
