Sage Renee Thistlemott
17
Female
District 11
appearance
Already having worked seven years in the orchards surrounding her little town, Sage has the look of a hard laborer. Her golden brown hair is frazzled and messy, almost never neatly combed. Usually, one can find at least five twigs tangled in the sun-baked knots. Her wide blue eyes are outlined by dark shadows and cracked skin due to excessive exposure to the elements. The same harsh treatment has worked a number on her plump lips as well. Her skin is dry and tanned due to her time in the sun working in agriculture. Due to her work, her nails are almost always dirty. She has a bad habit of biting them short.
Though she is a tall girl of five feet and nine inches, she is far too skinny to be healthy. She weighs a measly one hundred and fifteen pounds, her bones practically trying to break free of their integumentary cage. Her hands are cracked and red, her fingers skinny and scarred from her work. A long scar runs down the left side of her face starting at the corner of her eye and ending about halfway down her neck. Other small scars litter her body from her childhood and growth into a teen, including whip marks on her back from a past mistake. Had she been in the right conditions, she probably would have been a beautiful glowing girl. Not everyone can live in the Capitol though.
personality
Sage is very quiet, a result of both her upbringing at home and the rules of the district. Many of her fellow citizens think she's actually mute. Not many people knew her as a child and if they did, she had probably changed beyond recognition in personality. As a child, she had been cheerful and carefree. Now, she keeps to herself instead of conversing with others due to fear of repercussions that could harm her.
Though she is a recluse of sorts, she is very wise due to her introspection and self-studies. Instead of being bothered with the business of the district and putting her nose where it didn't belong, she put it in her books. She knows much about the agricultural business and plants of her district due to her experience in the field and free reading. Despite her attempted not to be, she is very clumsy. Sage is slow and careful in everything she does, fearful of making a mistake and ruining everything around her. Her clumsiness tends to get her into bad situations.
Due to her history of abuse, Sage has become fearful of several things. Naturally, she is scared of pain. Little pains like cuts from her work and bruises from falling don't bother her much, but the idea of reliving her past scars terrifies her. Due to her past experiences, she is afraid of people to an extent. That is the reason for her muteness. She refuses to talk due to her fear of getting close to people only to have them hurt her again. This is quite impractical seeing as she lives in a community home. It has put her at odds with many people and turned her, in a way, into the town freak. No one even tries to speak to her anymore because she simply walks away.
history
Born to Jonathon and Lily Thistlemott, Sage was a perfect little child. Well, almost perfect. She tended to trip a lot and break things. It wasn't like she could help that though. She tried to be the best daughter she could to her weary, overworked parents. As a yound child, she diligently went to school and even helped her mother cook by the age of eight. Despite all of this, no one could help the little problems that began to pile up in her home. Her mother was sick and could hardly leave bed. Her father worked double the time to try and keep their income up. They began to run lower and lower on food and medicines until one day there was nothing left. Day by day, she and her father would watch Lily drift away from them until one day, she was gone. Just like that.
Sage's father was by no means a violent man, but her mother's death sent him into a rage. Her cursed and howled at the moon, begging for her mother to return to them. He'd pick at every little mistake Sage made. Not enough food? Well Sage was obviously the cause of that. A greedy little child must be eating secretly and taking larger portions. His solution was to stop her from eating. Not enough money? Well then Sage must quit school and work in the fields. She had to pull her weight after all. Too much snow? Sage's fault. The crops were weak? Sage's fault. Their roof was leaking? Sage's fault. She'd become a scapegoat for every little problem her father saw. He would shout at her and hit her until she couldn't cry anymore. He would scream that he hoped she'd be Reaped for the Hunger Games. It wasn't until a year later that one of their neighbors noticed what was going on and turned him in. The last thing she saw as she was being hauled away by Peacekeepers was her father getting a bullet to the back of the head. Apparently abusing a child was not to be tolerated by any means.
Sage was taken to a community home for orphans led by an elderly couple and was put back in school. For the first few months after the incident, Sage was an unruly child. She lashed out at the members of the home. She screamed at Peacekeepers in the streets. She stole fruit from the trees she harvested. She was disrespectful in classes. She did everything she could to act out. Finally, one of the Peacekeepers decided he'd turned a blind eye on the "poor, confused girl" long enough. He publicly humiliated her and whipped twenty times, enough to make an eleven year old black out. When she opened her eyes again, it was two days later and she wasn't allowed out of bed for two weeks. After that, she went back to work. Sage turned into a shell of her former self, unwilling to speak a single word to anyone. She closed herself off from the world. Inside, she was terrified of stepping out of line again. The mere thought of the pain and torture it would bring sent her into panic attacks.
Another year passed easily while Sage slowly began to learn more and continue to shut out the world. She continued her work in the fields, growing comfortable with climbing the trees and cutting away branches and high fruits. Some of the most skilled workers were jealous of her ability to climb up high and get the illusive fruits. She even began to learn how to tie knots and traps in order to catch unwanted animals in the fields. Despite blocking out others, she refused to block out the information available. Just because she doesn't speak doesn't mean she isn't listening. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/justify]
