Age: 15 years old
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 11
Appearance:
Sal stands at five foot three inches, and barely one hundred pounds. The majority of her body is of small stature. A barely-there chest signifies her upper body. Her protruding ribs and lack of a belly advertise the fact she isn’t well-fed. Her hip bones are thick and wide, the only part of her body of a bigger proportion. These hips add more pronounced curves. Her legs are thin, but with just enough muscle to climb the trees with ease.Personality:
With a pointed face, drawn in at her cheekbones and brought together at her chin, Sal catches eyes. Her light brown eyes bring to mind a big cat’s , but the long, thick eyelashes stemming from them soften their color. A slightly crooked nose, pointed and medium length, gives the air that Sal has been through some tough times. Her facial features are finish off with heart-shaped, full, medium-pink lips that most boys wouldn’t mind kissing if it wasn’t for their easy ability to get chapped.
Dark brown, almost black hair flows from her roots. Natural brown highlights from long days in the sun are in mixed in. Her hair has a tendency to get frizzy in humidity. It is also very thick, and provides easy discomfort if not put up. Her dark hair is only on her head, her arms and legs are covered with a lighter brown color. This arm and leg hair is also thick and covers much of her skin.
Sal’s deep tan is due to many days in the fields. Though her color, somewhere between a golden brown and the brown of tree bark, is a pretty color, it has its consequences. The constant sun on her skin has dried it out, and leaved her shoulders, neck and back peeling and cracked. Her facial complexion is basically clear, except for the occasional break-out rash. Her neck is speckled with acne, due to sweating during work.
Saelone Tavier tends to wear a white, short-sleeve cotton shirt with tan pants. She has worn this outfit for so long, it’s almost thread-bare. Her feet are always barefoot. She is given one new, identical outfit by the orphanage she is now in.
An ambitious soul, Sal is constantly working. If it’s working in the fields, or at the home, she’s doing it. Perseverance stems from her ambition, she will push through the pain, if it means she accomplishes her goal. To her, there’s nothing like that feeling of finishing things. When she does finishing something, her attitude can become almost prideful.History:
Though ambitious in work, Sal is cautious in friendships. Interactions with other people, especially those her age, are tough for her. She clams up and has trouble speaking. She is scared of the opposite gender especially those older then her. Her social shyness leaves her very alone.
Sal is insecure about who she is. Her tiny physique has her intimidated. She’s always wondered what it’d be like to be one of the Peacekeepers in her district. They always seem to have a lot of power and respect. Unlike her or anyone else in the district. She wonders this, but deep down she knows she’d never truly want to be one if the opportunity arose.
Loyalty is something dear to Sal. Taught to put her family and others before herself, she will do anything for those that she’s close to. Sal can be hard to befriend, but once you befriend her, she’s there until the end. This loyalty causes her to believe that others will do the same. Her easy trust causes her to be let down often.
Sal believes that there is good in everything. Beauty, especially in nature, she’ll stop and admire. People never think of Sal as someone negative towards others. Her kind ways can get her in trouble when tough people come her way. People easily walk over her and use her.
Wealth is a concept foreign to Sal, she doesn’t want it, but she doesn’t like being so poor. If she was wealthy, she wouldn’t be so hungry. Her need for food, her need to survive drives her, it’s what gives her perseverance. Her goal one day is to have enough food to be happy and content.
Sal doesn’t dream often. But when she does, they are far-fetched dreams, dreams of being in the Capitol, or dreams of having so much food she’d be too full to eat another bite. Her biggest dream though is to draw, to be able to create pictures with her own hands, to be able to create beautiful things. She knows this dream is nearly impossible.
Saelone Olivar Tavier was born to Augusto Sloane Tavier and Miketta Areta Tavier on the year of the 45th Hunger Games, in a small cottage in the biggest town of District 11. Miketta met Augusto on a summer’s eve on the day of the 30th Reaping. Due to her older brother’s sacrifices, Miketta was better off than some of those around the district. Augusto was from a very poor family. That Reaping day Miketta’s brother was sent off to The Games. The two met in the square, and became friends. As Miketta’s family become poor, Augusto and Miketta’s relationship grew. They finally married in the year of the 36th Hunger Games at the ages of 18 and 20.Codeword: odair
Miketta and Augusto were of average wealth and status in District 11, until Sal’s father was arrested in the year of the year of the 54th Hunger Games. Convicted of minor treason, he was incarcerated for life. Her mother tried, to no avail, to provide for Sal and her two siblings: Elizar, and Maley. Since Sal was still two years from being able to apply for tesserae, her mother had no choice in what she did next.
A wealthy Peacekeeper, once a member of the Capitol, in District 11 was willing to employ the daughters of families who couldn’t feed their children. His name was Cadros Scuttles. He offered food, shelter, and water for maid services. There was one catch, Miketta could never see her daughter again. In the year of the 55th Hunger Games, Miketta Tavier gave away her only daughter.
At ten years old, Saelone had very little idea what was going on. Her mother cried, and reminded her that she was only doing what was best. She told Sal that by going with this strange man, she was saving her family. She was saving her brothers.
Cadros had three maids, all under the age of twelve. Under him, Saelone learned to cook, clean, sew and anything else he needed her to do. Though Cadros was not a cruel man, his eldest son was. By decree of Cadros, Sal was to wait hand on foot on this thirteen year old boy.
On Sal’s fourteenth birthday, the day she would finally be able to go work in the fields instead of at Cadros’ house, the now seventeen year old boy stole her innocence. She’d endured his abuse- the slapping, punching, throwing- for four long years, but nothing compared to the despair that now filled her heart. A deep hatred rooted itself in her heart, along with a stem of fear.
Sal left the Scuttle household shortly after that day. She began to work in the fields, not earning enough to feed herself. With no home, she started to live on the streets, in abandoned buildings and up in the orchid trees. She became a beggar girl, though no one in the district had much money to spare. This living led her to apply for as much tesserae as possible. Thankfully, her year on her own never landed her in The Hunger Games.
Over the course of her childhood, Saelone had few friends. Back living with her mother, her next door neighbor, Valarae Macholtz, a girl two years younger then herself, was her best friend. Leaving her behind left Sal very lonely in her first year at the Scuttles, until she met Mayberi , a fellow maid at Scuttles. Fast friends, it took a lot of determination on Sal’s part to leave her behind the day she left the Scuttles. She hasn’t met anyone since and not a day goes by that she isn’t lonely.
Now, after being caught be a Peacekeeper, Sal lives under careful surveillance in the orphanage. She goes to school and then straight to work. Her knowledge of The Hunger Games, the Capitol and things of that nature are growing every day. Though straight after school she goes to work in the field, when she has her precious free time, she engraves pictures in the dirt or on the trees.
