My name's Cai Frazier
I'm pretty sure I just turned 12 years old
I'm a boy
I live in District 12
Appearances can deceive, but they can also tell the truth
Head
Cai's head is angular, brought out by a lack of fat. His cheekbones stand out strongly, making his face look sunken. Usually his face is coated in coal dust, turning his normally olive skin black. Across his face are large, livid scars from where he has been beaten. His teeth are grimy, but kept clean enough to not rot. He has zits all across his forehead, formed by the constant grime of his living conditions.
His eyes are gray as rain clouds, but shed water far less. They are lifeless, seemingly dead. If once the sparkled with imagination and fun, those days are now long gone.
His hair is black as raven feathers. It is medium length and raggedly cut, seemingly by a knife. Upon the touch it is greasy and tangly, clearly left unwashed and un-cared for. Very straight, his hair covers his ears and forehead.
Body
Cai is 4 ft. 10 in. tall, weighing in at a very light 80 lbs. His overall physique his small and lithe. Even if he was well fed, he wouldn't be very big. Small and wiry, that's Cai. Even not very well fed, Cai is quick from his stealing of food. (See History)
Most of his body is covered in small scars from various fights and punishments for stealing. His back is the worst, scared heavily with whip lashings. He is also missing his left pinky, a stub of scar tissue covering the stump that remains.
Everyone is their own Person
Cai is naturally distrustful. People hurt him, people leave him in the gutter to starve. No one has yet given him a reason to trust them. He naturally avoids people. If anyone tries to be nice to him, he instantly suspects they are trying to use him. Trying to make him their servant. He'll either instantly be cold and unresponsive, or he'll just run. If someone were to convince him they were his friend, he would be extremely loyal. The issue is convincing him. He has erected a sort of barrier around himself, and it would take huge amounts of effort to turn him to your side.
Cai has very few things he actually enjoys to do. Eat is one of them, but he so rarely has food he rarely gets to enjoy that wonder. Very few people in District 12 can truly indulge that kind of enjoyment. He also enjoys climbing. To him it's fun, the challenge. He might like reading, if he knew how to.
Cai is cunning. He might not be book-smart, but he knows his ability and he is good at analyzing he makes plans to try and get things that make his life better. Mainly shelter and a morsel to eat.
He also has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The symptoms he shows is eratic bouts of extreme irritability, flashbacks to moments of extreme pain and fear in his life, avoidance of things that remind him of the events that gave it to him. Unfortunately, most of his life has been a horrible memory.
Cai is a very hardworking kid. He has to be. When he has a goal, it will take a lot of failure to get him to stop attempting the goal. Even then, he might later go back. That's just how he works, always want to accomplish things no matter how many failures it takes.
No one can claim quite the same History as another
Cai is an orphan. Always has been. His father died in a mining accident a few months before he was born. His mother died a few months after giving birth to him. She died of starvation, as Cai's father had always supported the family, and she could only make the money last so long. He was left at the mayor's house, but the mayor didn't want to care for this little boy. He was given to a family in the Seam, who were told they had to raise him. They didn't want to raise this boy, this child they didn't know in their home. He didn't have the same name as them. They didn't want to give him their name, since they resented him, even though he wasn't even 1 yet.
The family fed him, but only just. They could barely feed themselves. He slept in a box in the corner, with only the corner torn off some old blanket for warmth. When he was old enough to walk and talk and do things, they gave him chores. He would try, but every time he messed up, they would yell harshly at him and beat him. He became a sort of slave, doing all the house work and getting punished constantly. They didn't send him to school to learn, they kept him in their home and made him work.
Even with a slave though, the family was running out of money. Cai's adoptive father was drinking it all away. Cai was 8 when they decided something had to go to survive. That something was Cai. Throwing him into the streets, they washed their hands of him. Young, confused, hungry, and desperate, Cai began to steal things. Food, clothes, even a small knife when he turned 9. A birthday present to himself. No one else was going to give him one. After all, when he was caught stealing they beat him, or gave him to the Peacekeepers for a whipping.
Cai, a few months after his ninth birthday, Cai finally found a better place to live. There was a back room, in the Hob, that wasn't being used. The traders recognized that he was sad. He always avoided them though, so they 'accidentally' showed it to him and pretended to not notice him living there. That was probably the only act of kindness Cai had ever received. And the last of two he would receive for a while. Neither would he understand.
When Cai was ten, he was caught stealing from a Peacekeeper. After being beaten, Cai was sent to the whipping post. That wasn't the end of it though. The Peacekeeper found Cai afterward in the Hob and dragged him outside. Cai went out kicking and screaming, but couldn't resist. The Peacekeeper beat him again, and eventually pulled out a knife. With this he cut off Cai's finger, then threw him into the gutter. When Cai started screaming, the Peacekeeper cut up his face with the knife to silence him. He threatened Cai that if he ever reported the Peacekeeper, he would feel ten times the pain before he died. This is the event that sparked the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, but previous and later experiences helped it get worse.
Cai was unconscious when a few nervous traders found him and bandaged him up, feeding him the food from his very small stores. Eventually he was woken up, but no one told him who had taken care of him. He though he had been dragged inside and somehow managed to live.
Cai now continues to steal things, although he's better at not getting caught now. He lives in the same back room, watching the humans who have always hurt him so much. He uses the knife he stole so long ago to try and protect himself, which he now carries at all times in case the Peacekeeper comes back.
There are Other things in life than that we must know
