Some days the Earth seems to stop turning. I hate those days; Those days the hours, minutes, and seconds seem to never end. It is as if everyday wants to see me day, slowly and painfully, each and every day. My life consists of swimming through a disgusting pool of memories that no one in the world and comprehend, or if they could, they could care less about them. I know they could care less about me, drowning and choking for air but only finding enough to keep me alive a little longer for each day's enjoyment. Sometimes I can envision myself just simply letting go; but then I remember I can't. It only would make me like my mother, showing that I thought there was no way out of this pool of sorrow I nearly drown in everyday. The thing is, I know there is no way out of my life but the easy way. Death. But it never comes to the rescue, and instead I am forced down the path that we humans call life; The never ending path to what eventually becomes hell.
Night falls and I am in the middle of nowhere. The blood red sand looks black when no light rains over it and I think that I am going to have to sleep here. It all looks like a menacing hole, just waiting to swallow me whole. My hands are sweating and my knees weak with exhaustion and what is sure to be the onset of a fever. What I wouldn't give for a smoke ... My feet stumble beneath me as I collapse in the grainy blanket. I am surprised to feel comfort in this deep, dark hole, but it seems that it is here to protect me and watch over me. I throw my backpack beneath my head and give a sigh of relief as I find it to be soft to the touch. I'm belly down, and I can feel my stomach shift with hunger. After only a day I am dehydrated and starving. Should've figured. My eyes close and my breathing slows as I fall into the depths of sleep, something impossible to avoid.
FANFARE
I feel my eyes flicker open at the sound of Panems anthem. The noise is grinding and quite irritating to the ear but something so familiar brings comfort to me. I lift my head and find that sand has wafted over the lower part of my body. I scramble away, watching a wall of sand slowly begin to build its way up, higher and higher. I quickly climb the pile as best I can, knowing I have to keep up with it or be buried alive. Although I have to admit the idea doesn't seem half bad. I turn my head to the stars and watch as 10 faces flash in the sky. All I notice right away is that both District 7 tributes are dead, as well as the boy from 6, despite his threatening looks. Then of course I see Lightning, her picture seeming unreal in the sky. I hate myself for caring, but I find that I do. She was the only one I had ever talked to and now there was no chance of talking to her again. But I guess if you think about it, it will be easier now that she is gone.
The anthem has stopped now as I mull over the losses of Day 1. Ten tributes in just one day? It was hard to think of so much murder ... So much indecency from my fellow tributes. I hate to think about it, hate that I don't know who killed one another and knowing that none of the people who were dead had fought the real enemy. Not a single one fought the right person. The right people. The right thing ...
My eyes flash open an my heart pounds when I realize that I had fallen asleep. Sunlight is now raining over me once again, an the red sand is still surrounding me, no longer looking like a black hole. I hate not knowing when I went back to sleep last night, and I really hate that I had fallen back asleep like that, so unprepared for attack. But I guess that is what the Gamemakers wanted. No other tributes to watch over you when you sleep, or fight for that matter. My mind whirls, thoughts on what to accomplish today bouncing around inside my brain. Water. Food. More wood. More bandages. Perhaps a camp? It was so hard to plan when it seemed that none of it would matter in the end anyways ,,, I was dead soon anyhow.
My necklace causes a shimmer to flash into my eye. I look down at it as I grasp it in my palm. Maybe there is a reason for me to live after all. I smile.
"Morning Em."
