[/color]So, it's happening again. A family dinner. What. The. Actual. Fuck. This time around, it's just the older kids - Alec, Adrian, Ander, Aria (what's with the As?!), Helena, and me, along with our mother. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. On one hand, we can say whatever the fuck we want without worrying about virgin ears, on the other there is nothing to stop us from saying whatever the fuck we want. It could be a fun night, and it will most definitely end in tears, possibly bloodshed.
It was me who called everyone here. I want to formally announce my engagement to Aria. Helena and Adrian already know, but they somehow have kept their big mouths shut and mother has yet to hear of it - they probably just wanted to wait to see her reaction when I tell her, they knew it would make more of a scene. Jerks.
I take a deep breath and grab Aria’s hand under the table, stroking the back of her hand with my thumb, reassuring her because I’m certain she is just as nervous as me about my mother finding out. “Are you ready for this?” I whisper, glancing over at my mother. She wasn’t paying attention to us at the moment; it was thankfully aimed toward Helena. “Do you remember what happened last time we had a family dinner? Things went bat shit crazy.” I have to shake my head at the memory. “Well, this is bound to get ten times worse. Promise you’ll still want to marry me after this?” It’s meant rhetorically, but I say with dead seriousness.
I’m honestly worried about Aria giving up on me because of my creepy ass family. Aria has stayed with me through so much shit, but at some point she’s gonna get tired of it, right? Her family is so…normal. She didn’t grow up in this toxic environment. She isn’t used to it. Once the engagement is announced and Aria has to live here, will she be overwhelmed? I squeeze her hand tightly, fear slamming through me so fast it took my breath away. I lift my other hand from my lap and brush her hair out of her face, trying to squelch this absurd fear.
Czar, who was laying at me feet, suddenly bolts to his feet, making me jump. I look under the table at him, ready to yell, but he was standing in such a way that I knew something was wrong. He was staring intently at the dining room door, bristled, and growling deep in his chest. I’m confused momentarily, wondering what could possibly make Czar act this way. I suddenly realize what’s wrong and dread settles over me like a lead blanket. “Holy Shit.” I hiss and grab Aria again, thinking of ways to escape.
Too late.
My father throws open the doors of the dining room, dressed in an immaculate black suit, and looking like a king. His coal black hair was gelled back, and his salt and pepper beard trimmed to perfection. He didn’t look bad for a cold-hearted, sadistic, treacherous, adulterer. Conversations immediately fell away as everyone turned their attention on my father. We all gaped at him, not sure what to say, unable to imagine why he was here…It could only be bad news. He only showed up if he had to.
At the head of the table my mother stood up, the perplexed look vanishing from her face to make way for a look of fear. “Lucian, my dear, I didn’t know you where coming. I would have prepared a feast!” My mother, usually unflappable, stumbled over her words. I almost felt sorry for the harpy. My father waved an impatient hand, and took his place at the other end of the table. “Sit down Miriam, before you break a hip.” My mom flinches, and with all the dignity she could muster, sat down.
Father looked down at his empty plate, he face turned a shade of purple. “Why is there no food in front of me?!” He roared, slamming his fists down on the table. “They haven’t served it yet, Mr. Scott.” I say quietly. He turned his black eyes on me, sneering slightly. “Ah, Adrian…or are you Julian, I can never tell, don’t be so preposterous. I am your father, so you will call me father.” Before I could reply, he had turned his eyes on Aria. “And who are you?!" He demanded. I was about to introduce her, but father held up a hand to silence me. “I asked her.”
